Here’s @dduane​’s first take on it and the finished product. We’ve made even more photogenic batches since.

Kneading is easy as well; either let your machine do it, or if you don’t want to or don’t have one, get hands-on. It’s like mixing two colours of Plasticine to make a third. Flatten, stretch, fold, half-turn, repeat - it takes about 10 minutes - until the gloopy conglomeration of flour, yeast, salt and water that clings to your hands at the beginning, becomes a compact ball that doesn’t stick to things and feels silky-smooth.

Here’s what before and after look like.

My Mum used to say that if you were feeling out of sorts with someone, it was good to make bread because you could transfer your annoyance into kneading the dough REALLY WELL, and both you and the bread would be better for it.

Then you put it into a bowl, cover it with cling-film and let it rise until it doubles in size, turn it out and “knock it back” (more kneading, until it’s getting back to the size it started, this means there won’t be huge “is something living in here?” holes in the bread), put it into your loaf-tin or whatever - we’ve used a regular oblong tin, a rectangular Pullman tin with a lid, a small glass casserole, an earthenware chicken roaster…

You can even use a clean terracotta flowerpot.

Let the dough rise again until it’s high enough to look like an unbaked but otherwise real loaf, then pop it in the preheated oven. On average we give ours 180°C / 355°F for 45-50 minutes. YM (and oven) MV.

Here’s some of our bread…

Here’s our default bread recipe - it takes about 3-4 hours from flour jar to cutting board depending on climate (warmer is faster) most of which is rise time and baking; hands-on mixing, kneading and knocking-back is about 20 minutes, tops, and less if using a mixer.

Here ( or indeed any of the other pics) is the finished product. This one was given an egg-wash to make it look glossy and keep the poppy-seeds in place; mostly we don’t bother with that or the slash down the middle, but all the extras were intentional as a “ready for my close-up” glamour shot.

I think any shop would be happy to have something this good-looking on their shelf. We’re happy to have it on our table.

Even if your first attempts don’t work out quite as well as you hope, you can always make something like this…

I have gotten quite a number of asks on how to start a studyblr, etc. Without further ado, let’s dive into it.

Part 1: Introduction

What is a studyblr?

Study + Tumblr

Study blog where you can post everything related to studying ranging from notes to desk pictures

Some misconceptions you might have

Basically some things I observe in the studyblr community which are not true

You need to own certain stationery (i.e. those fancy stationery, eg. mildliners) or certain laptops (eg. Macbook) to own a studyblr

You need to have neat handwriting to own a studyblr

You need to have a white desk to take studyspo pictures

NO, you absolutely DO NOT need those things to own a studyblr

Why I should join the studyblr community?

It is a very friendly community which consists of people encouraging one another to study

Helps to keep you accountable on the tasks you need to do (eg. there is accomplishments posts ([x] you can make daily)

Helps to motivate you to study when you don’t want to but needs to (eg. aesthetically pleasing notes)

Part 2: Setting up a studyblr

To make studyblr as your main or secondary blog?

There are pros and cons for both whichever you decide

If you decide to make it as your main blog, you’ll have to create another account

If you decide to make it as your secondary blog, you can’t follow people from there, send an ask signing in to your studyblr account, can be confusing sometimes (i.e. you accidentally post/reblog your studyblr content onto your main blog) but stay logged into one account (easier on mobile) and can add other members in when you want to run a collaborative blog

Choosing your username/url

First, choose something you like, can be a type of fruit or a subject (eg. peaches, milk tea) or just use your name

Then, include the words “study” or “studies” behind to indicate to others that you are a studyblr (eg. milkteastudies)

Or use any other words related to study (eg. focusing, etc)

If it is taken, you can try to add an additional (s) at the end of “studies” (eg. my username, adelinestudiess) or just change the spelling of a the word (eg. focusign instead of focusing)

Your username does not necessarily have to include any word related to studying

You can change your username at any point in time when you have thought of something better so don’t stress yourself too much over it

Choosing your icons

There are studyblr icons which are made by others available but make sure to credit them accordingly! @nerdastically @somestudy @emmastudies @rhubarbstudies @sensiblestudy

Alternatively, you can also try to make your own icons using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator (free) Canva (free) and sketchpad

Choosing your theme

Choose one which is easy to navigate and aesthetically pleasing to look at

Increase the font size to a legible size so its easier to others to view when they check your profile

Set up a navigation system, you can check mine out for example (x)

There are premade ones available on Tumblr. Some theme makers and theme sources are @theme-hunter @odeysseus @roxiesthemes @pohroro @sorrism @ciralism @acuite

After you have selected a theme, follow the instructions in the caption and DO NOT remove the credit to the original theme creators

Consider making an about page to allow people to get to know you better when they visit your blog (it can be part of the navigation system like how mine is)

Part 3: Kickstart your blog

Make an introductory post

Make an introductory post introducing yourself to the community, by including your name, some facts about you, eg. your age, mbti type and some hobbies of yours, goals, classes you take and studyblrs which inspire you to start this journey!

Purpose to tag the studyblrs that inspire you is to allow them to reblog your introductory posts to let their followers know of your presence in the community!

Create original content aka how you gain followers

Start posting or scheduling your posts. The things you can post include masterposts, advice posts, notes, desk pictures

Masterposts are posts where you link a ton of advice posts on a popular topic (eg. the one I made for ace your exams here [x]). Advice posts are where you give advice to a topic (eg. how to deal with procrastination).

Take photos in natural lighting (they help to make your photos look a lot better without heavy editing)

Many people use vsco to edit their photos (here’s a simple guide to how I edit my photos [x])

Remember to tag your posts under popular hashtags such as #study #studyblr #studyspo

You can also tag your posts under your favourite studyblrs track tags, (eg. for me, it is #adelinestudiess) so that they can check out your account and reblog your post!

Some other tips

Use the queue option

Queue option allows the posts you queued to be posted at evenly spread out timings during the day. This allows you to stay active on Tumblr even when you are busy with school work, etc. You can queue up to 50 posts a day and queue up to 300 posts

Don’t get too obsessed over the number of followers

Number of followers does not determine quality of your posts or anything

It is rewarding to see how many people followed you but don’t let that be your main focus

There is no magic method to gaining followers, gaining followers is a long process, you’ll just gain along the way, while you continue doing something you love

Be respectful and friendly

This is pretty self explanatory. Everyone will like someone who is respectful and friendly towards them and this is also what keeps the studyblr community thriving! Don’t take your followers for granted, be grateful towards them. DO NOT send anonymous hate, even if that means no one knew that you sent it. The studyblr community is very welcoming and friendly and let’s make it stay that way.

You can also try to host some blogrates, (eg. like the 10k blogrates I hosted a while back [x]) blog awards or even giveaways (if you are able to afford) when you reach followers milestones to show your gratitude towards them!

Do not ask other people to do a shoutout for you or ask them to follow you

Do not try to include a link to your blog when you reblog other people’s posts in an attempt to let other people can see your blog in the notes. It just reflects bad on you

Don’t be afraid

hey hello hi!!! it’s been ages (6 months?!) since my last masterpost, and i’ve been seeing so many great educational apps on the google play store. so here’s a list of some educational smartphone apps that you should check out! 

disclaimer: i have not used most of these applications (i generally don’t use study or even productivity apps), so i’m recommending them based on reviews!

general education

curiosity [ play store, free ] [ apple, free ] curiosity is a super cool app that’s all about learning new quirky facts! every 24 hours new content is released, including mind-blowing science, history and technology facts. it’s like having the best museum and the most fascinating library at your disposal.

coursera [ play store, free ] [ apple, free ] with coursera, you can access more than 1,000 courses and specializations developed by 140+ of the best colleges and universities in the world, and master subjects from python programming and data science to photography and music.

edx [ play store, free ] [ apple, free ] edx provides free online courses from the world’s best universities and institutions. there are so many topics to discover, including computer science, engineering, history, psychology, nutrition, big data, statistics and hundreds more. with edx, you have the flexibility to learn on your schedule. it is free education, when and where you want it.

khan academy [ play store, free ] [ apple, free ] khan academy allows you to learn (almost) anything for free. browse over 10,000 videos and explanations at your fingertips in math, science, economics, history, and much, much more. sharpen your skills with over 40,000 interactive practice questions with instant feedback and step-by-step hints. khan academy is a wealth of resources and it’s all free!  note: i really really recommend khan academy! it is super helpful and there’s also the free sat prep (and the upcoming free lsat prep for people interested in law school)!!

udemy [ play store, free ] [ apple, free ] udemy is your place to learn real world skills online. with over 32,000 online courses and tutorials, offered in more than 80 languages, you can choose from a wide range of topics to inspire creativity, hone your skills, be your own boss, and more. courses in everything from programming, it & software, business, marketing and entrepreneurship, health, design, languages, music, and much more.

goodwall [ play store, free ] [ apple, free ] goodwall is basically a social network for students - you can share your skills and achievements and win scholarships (and even be recognized by colleges and universities!) when you join, you are eligible for a $500 weekly new student award, in addition to the $1000 student of the month scholarship. people seem to think that it’s a great way to connect to other motivated students throughout the world (obviously the studyblr community is The Best ;) but here’s an awesome alternative!)

schoold [ play store, free ] [ apple, free ] schoold is a super cool app that allows you to find information on 3000+ colleges and 25k+ scholarships by major and admission chance. It also offers free college counseling (advice on applications, financial aid, majors, and careers) and future planning tools! 

science

phywiz [ play store, free ] need help with your physics homework? phywiz provides step by step solutions for questions in over 30 physics topics, including kinematics, forces, gravity, and quantum physics. ask phywiz a question like "if mass is 6 and velocity is 7, what is momentum?“ and get your answer immediately. many of the positive reviews call it “one of the best apps i’ve ever used”.

little alchemy [ play store, free ] [ apple, free ] [ website ] this is such a cute game where you start with four elements and combine them to create interesting, fun and surprising items. it’s definitely addictive!

chemistry quiz [ play store, free ]  500+ quiz questions covering the elements, the periodic table, bonding and interactions, matter and mixtures, chemical reactions, acids and bases, organic chemistry, nuclear chemistry, history of chemistry, and labs.

skyview [ play store, free ] [ apple, free ] a beautiful and intuitive stargazing app that uses your camera to precisely spot and identify celestial objects in sky, day or night. it’s a great app for people who love space but don’t want to purchase fancy equipment to enjoy its beauty. you can see what each star and planet is and where it’s going. be sure to calibrate it first!

coding

encode [ play store, free ] encode is packed with bite-sized coding lessons that combine succinct explanations and clear real-code examples. it is a wonderful way for beginners to start programming.

sololearn has a ton of apps that are all about learning to code: java, c#, python, javascript, c++, etc.!

programming hub [ play store, free ] [ apple, free ] your one-stop solution to learn all of the top programming languages! you can learn c, c++, java, html, javascript, r, css, vb.net, c#, python 2.7, python 3, linux shell scripting, swift, sql, jquery, and assembly 8086. there are over 1800+ pre-compiled programs with output for practice and learning. a new feature seems to be the programming-related interview questions that can help you prepare for a job interview!

codenza [ play store, free ] codenza is a dictionary of 3000+ ready-made computer programs: the ultimate coding encyclopedia for university curriculum. codenza covers everything from computer graphs to artificial intelligence! note: codenza does not teach programming. it only provides programs and offers explanations for the more complex programs.

math

cymath [ play store, free ] [ apple, free ] [ website ] stuck on a math problem? cymath allows you to enter your problem, and helps you to solve it step-by-step. topics include pre-algebra, algebra (equation solving, factoring, logarithms, exponents, complex numbers, quadratic equations, trigonometry, partial fraction, polynomial division, etc.), and calculus (product rule, quotient rule, chain rule, u-substitution, integration by parts, integration by partial fraction, trigonometric substitution, rationalizing substitution, etc.)

photomath [ play store, free ] [ apple, free ] math is full of symbols that we are inconvenient to type, and photomath solves that problem: simply point your camera toward a math problem and photomath will show the result with detailed step-by-step instructions. there is a new feature of handwriting recognition as well!

mathway [ play store, free ] [ apple, free ] [ website ] yet another math problem solver! this one allows you to type your problem or scan a picture of your problem. mathway covers basic math, pre-algebra, algebra, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus, statistics, finite math, linear algebra, chemistry, and graphing. one flaw seems to be that you need to be online for it to work, but otherwise, it’s a fantastic tool!

history

history timeline [ play store, free ] okay, woah. this is a detailed timeline of world history with thousands of entries! it includes world history (events, nations, leaders, and wars) AND history of science, art, literature, music, and philosophy.

today in history [ play store, free ] [ similar apple, free ] for the history enthusiast who wants to learn something new every day: today in history tells you what historical events happened on that day! it works offline and you can choose from over 50 languages.

ancient history encyclopedia [ play store, free ] [ website ] thousands of informative and reliable articles on ancient history. articles are written with students in mind and are carefully reviewed to ensure accuracy, and are easy to read. 

languages

duolingo [ play store, free ] [ apple, free ] one of the leading language learning apps, duolingo gives you the ability to learn english, spanish, french, german, italian, portuguese, dutch, irish, danish, swedish, russian, ukrainian, esperanto, polish, and turkish for free. you can practice your speaking, reading, listening, and writing skills and improve your vocabulary and grammar.

productivity

forest [ play store, free ] [ apple, $1.99 ] forest is a cute productivity app that keeps you off of your phone! you set a certain amount of time, and during that time a tree ‘grows’, but if you use your phone before the times up, the tree dies. :( 

habitica [ play store, free ] [ apple, free ] have you heard of ‘gamification’? habitica is an app that allows you to gamify your tasks! check off tasks to level up your avatar and unlock features such as armor, pets, skills, and even quests! it’s a great way to have fun while being productive! note: habitica is another one of these apps that i’ve actually attempted to use - it is super cute and it’s definitely a great way to stay on track!

timetune [ play store, free ] timetune is a great app for people who have established a daily routine or would like to. you can set up a routine (or multiple routines) and add your daily tasks. it can be used as a daily task reminder, student calendar, timetable planner, routine schedule organizer, routine optimizer, habit creation tool, daily time manager, or daily planner.

ike [ play store, free ]  ike is a to-do list that uses eisenhower’s priority matrix. you can organize your tasks by importance and urgency, and add all sorts of details such as due dates and location reminders.

habithub [ play store, free ] habithub is based on seinfeld’s productivity secret, which involves building long streaks of days that will motivate you to keep moving forward. (snapchat for habits? i think yes!) it includes a full calendar view for every habit, reminders, compatibility with smartwatches, the option to write notes every day, more flexible goals, the ability to categorize your habits, and graphs that show you how you’re doing. the interface looks beautiful and people seem to love the abundance of settings.

pomotodo [ play store, free ] [ apple, free ] there is an abundance of pomodoro timers in the app store, and pomotodo is one of them! pomotodo easily syncs across platforms, has advanced to-do list options, the ability to customize pomo and break times, offers background noise to keep you focused, and sends you weekly email reports to help you track your productivity. i don’t want to list a ton pomodoro apps in this masterpost, but here are the many options on google play store!

make sure to read the poem at least 3 times over. skim once, and read twice. Skim and read once each if you don’t think you have enough time. Don’t let the length of it intimidate you.

annotate anything that will help you to answer the question. Answering the question, aside from literary devices on their own, is the most important.

be selective about the quotes and literary devices you find, and identify which ones you can write more about.

Be active while studying :

Do not mindelssly skip through your notes.Make sure you are fully understanding the material that you are working on. Ask yourself questions. If you can answer them , that’s cool, if you can’t, note them down on a post-it and ask your teacher or classmates or maybe google it. If you can’t focus take a break and come back later.

Set the mood for studying:

Wash you face and hands with cold water, or take a shower. Put on comfy clothes. Organize your study space and clean it up. Get yourself a snack and a cup of coffee or tea or just plain water, whatever works for you. Set the stuff you need for studying and get rid of anything else. If you don’t need your phone for studying, turn the wi-fi off and put it away from you. Start a study playlist if you want. Put your to do list right in front you and get to it.

Make a TO DO list:

Grab a white sheet of paper. Brain dump all the tasks you have to do for the day, prioritize them, and write them again in a clean way, while dismissing the unimportant tasks if you don’t have enough time.

Take breaks when you need them :

If you take too much you’ll lose focus, if you don’t take enough, your studying won’t be effective. If you can’t get yourself to study, set a timer for 30 min, take a 10 min break and work to add to the length of the studying each time.

Eat the frog :

Start with the boring and hardest tasks first. You’ll be more motivated to get work done after you get them out of the way.

Break up big goals to shorter clear tasks :

Don’t write for example ’ study maths ’ as a task, instead note exactly how you’re planning to do it, for instance ’ work 10 exercices from a certain book’ . It feels easier to get work done when it’s not just a vague goal.

Start homework as soon as you get. If you are busy, schedule a time block for doing it asap.

Break big projects to smaller tasks and schedule them on your planner.

You’ll more likely do them if you see them in your planner, then if it’s just an unclear deadline freaking you out and that you don’t know how to start.

Go to your classes and pay attention to your teachers:

Be ACTIVE. Ask questions, participate in class, it’s really helpful . Take your own notes, in your own way and don’t do just mindlessly note everything your teacher says. Pick just the important stuff or those that aren’t in the text book. Draw mind maps, lists, diagrams, use colors and leave space and margins.

When reviewing your notes, make them easier to understand by adding remarks from other sources in the margings.

I don’t know if it’s clear enough. But while reviewing my notes I like to use a pencil and try to make my notes easier to grasp, for example, write down a general way to solve all the problems that are similar to one that you have seen in class.

Study EVERYDAY:

Make studying a daily task. Don’t wait until the night before the test. Stay up to date with your classes.

Prepare your classes ahead of time time:

Read the text book. Google it. Watch YouTube videos. Take some notes and write questions for all the things you didn’t understand to ask in class. This way you won’t be overwhelmed in class and manage to not fall behind and make the most out if it.
