Oh. My. God! Please tell me you're continuing the Cabin story.
Part One here
–The stars are so bright that they’re reflected in the black surface of the lake, making the sky seem endless, the dome of the firmament blurred into an infinite celestarium. Scully’s body slips through the water around him, so gracefully that the surface barely ripples around her shoulders. It’s so beautiful, she’s so beautiful, that his heart constricts in his chest. “This feels amazing,” she sighs. “I forgot how much I love swimming naked.” She flips onto her back, looking up at the sky, and her nipples graze the surface of the water. He swims around her in circles, silently rejoicing in her shamelessness. “Hey, Scully?”“Yes, Mulder?” “You’re Irish, right?” “Why?” “I think you might actually be a Selkie, is all.” He puts on his very best storytelling voice as he splashes around her. “A seal who sheds her skin and walks upon the land as a beautiful woman…” “I know what a Selkie is - “ she interrupts. “I’m not done yet, Scully, patience - a beautiful woman who walks upon the land, seducing the poorest, saddest bastard she can find, only to abandon him and return to her home, the sea, after he’s fallen hopelessly in love…” “Shut up, Mulder.” She laughs, turning in the water. He can see the sweet, pale curve of her ass under the surface. “If I’m a Selkie, that would make you… what? Nessie? Ogopogo? Big Blue?” Oh, something’s blue, he thinks. “Nessie’s a girl,” he protests. She dips underwater, her hair swirling on the surface before joining her in the dark. He is mesmerized by the pale slip of her body circling around him, so much so that he doesn’t notice until it’s too late that she means to grab his ankle and pull him under. He panics, clumsily trying to kick her away, but she circles behind him and pokes him between his ribs with sharp little fingers. He whirls in the water, trying to catch her, but she’s already on the other side of him, digging her fingernails into his stomach, making him jerk. Oh, if the little Selkie wants to play, he’ll play. His competitive side takes over, and he manages to catch her on her next pass, both hands digging into her waist. She squirms and thrashes in a way that makes him absolutely crazy for her, her hands scratching hopelessly at him. He’s got a good foothold on the rocks, but he knows she can’t reach the bottom, which gives him the advantage. He heaves her up to the surface, flexing his fingers hard into her sides, and she’s laughing, gasping for air, her hair plastered across her forehead and cheeks in beguiling little swirls. Her skin is bare and warm under his fingers. Her skin, oh my god. The thrill of winning makes him brave, and he pulls her a little closer. Her breasts are floating, glowing against the star-strewn water, and he’s so hard that his balls are beginning to hurt. Scully catches him looking, squirms against his fingers, lets out a little nervous breath. But her hands come to his chest, and it’s not to push him away. He pulls her even closer, searching her face for a warning. And then his erection nudges her hip, and her sharp intake of breath brings him back to himself. Burning with shame, he loosens his grip on her. “Fuck, Scully, I’m so sorry -” he begins, but now it’s his turn to gasp, because she’s wrapping her fingers around his length. Her hand is warm, the water cool, and he’s worried he’s going to come right then and there. She meets his eyes - her own are glittering with mirth, and for a moment, he thinks he sees his own soul there. Something primal and ancient rises between them. She pulls him closer by his cock. “Big Blue it is.” Oh, Jesus, Scully. “I changed my mind. You’re not a Selkie, you’re a Siren.” “You know I can’t sing.” She scrapes the back of her nails over his throbbing balls, making him shudder.“I like your voice,” he murmurs, “especially when you say your big science words.” She smirks, drawing closer, and whispers in his ear. “pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolanoconiosis.” Her breath is hot on his neck, malt-scented and sticky sweet. “You vulgar creature.” He shifts, grabbing her ass, and she lets go of his dick, but this is so much better, because her legs wrap around him, and oh fuck - she is right there against him, and she’s burning hot with arousal. She wraps her arms around his neck, pressing her breasts into his chest, her forehead to his. The warmth of her skin, the coolness of the water, the stars glittering everywhere around them, the music of her ragged breathing. He’s intoxicated. He grinds his hips into hers. When he speaks, his voice is gruff. “Wh… what are we doing?” “We’re cooling off.” She wiggles against him. “Scully, stop me. Right now.” “Mmm. No. It’s too hot.”
45 Days - A Valentine's Drabble
Author: @2momsmakearight
Rating: Teen
Summary: it’s been 45 days since he kissed her for the first time.
Notes: I literally just busted this out as a one-shot. The tense bothers me and clearly there isn’t a beta. It’s crap. But I hope you enjoy!! Happy Valentine’s Day!
++++++
It’s been 45 days since he kissed her in that emergency room with Dick Clark’s voice echoing quietly in the back of his mind….
The television had aired men brave enough to kiss their best girls on live television so surely kissing his best friend should be easier than he was making it. But even still, as the confetti fell in showers down upon the locked lipped lovebirds on the screen, the moment was upon him, and the room closed in around him.
Before he could second guess himself, he’d leaned forward and pressed his lips to hers in a kiss far more chaste than he had ever envisioned. But she was soft and warm, and his belly had burned in that delicious sensation he had all but forgotten about.
It’s been 45 days since he kissed her for the first time, and 45 days since he kissed her for the *second* time too, when he’d pressed her gently against his door frame as his keys dangled from her fingertips, and his arm had been bound in a sling.
Could he still count that one in his column if she was the one who’d instigated it, and did it really matter when it had finished with his one good hand gripping the flesh of her ass, and her soft moans filling his mouth?
It’s been 45 days since he’d kissed her for the first time, and 44 since he wiped the nervous sweat from his forehead (blaming it on the faulty heat - those damn government pipes) and asked her on a date. A proper date. With table cloths and linen napkins, and if he was lucky maybe he’d get another kiss at the end of the night.
He had been a lucky man that night…
When he cupped her face to kiss her adieu at her door, wanting to taste the sweet wine on her lips he was certain would linger there, their tongues met, and her body had seemingly melted into his. Just as he was about to ask if he could come inside, Mrs. Goodville from next door had interrupted their moment with a stern reminder: “the Holy Ghost goes to bed at midnight, Dana.”
She’d pulled away with a soft snort, and a deep blush, nervously avoiding the eyes of her busybody old neighbor as she brushed non-existent lint from his chest. When the 86 year old woman chose to remain standing in her doorway instead of leaving the two of them to resume their public display of affection, Scully had looked up at him with eyes both apologetic and disappointed, and with a long sigh, he kissed her hand and bid her goodnight.
It was only on the way home that night, that he realized his raging case of blue balls had actually been a blessing in disguise. He could court her. Woo her. He’d waited seven years, and after all of this time they were finally moving in a direction faster than continental drift. That was something. With a toss of his keys in the air, and extra skip in his step, Fox Mulder had fallen asleep that early January night with the image of her blushing cheeks in his mind, and the scent of her perfume clinging to his shirt.
It’s been 45 days since he kissed her for the first time….
…and January turned out to be busier than he had expected. Paperwork and consults had filled the normally quiet month with days spent completely apart from her. She’d gone off to consult on a triple homicide in Oahu of all places, leaving him behind in snowy, chilly Washington, and he’d caught himself lifting his head to tell her something at multiple points in the day, only to be reminded of her absence.
He’d called her one night while she was gone…and for the first time in seven years, he didn’t want to talk about work. He’d wanted to talk about her. For three hours they spoke about nothing and everything all rolled up in the little details the make her *her*. About her favorite holiday: Christmas, obviously. Favorite dessert: mint chip ice cream. Favorite flower: yellow roses, like Nicky Arnstein gave Fannie Brice. Favorite childhood memory: vacation in the family station wagon up the coast of California. Vanilla or chocolate? Chocolate. Obviously. Silly question, Mulder. Sunrise or sunset? Depends who with. Interesting…
He’d be lying if he said his stomach hadn’t fluttered with that last one.
Softly, he’d told her that he’d like to see both with her one day. Of course he’d already seen both with her in various capacities, but this was different now…so very different.
It’s been 45 days since he kissed her for the first time, and 6 days since he’d greeted her at the airport with a dozen yellow roses, and a sheepish grin. He held her hand in the car on the way to her apartment that night, and had spent the evening curled up on the couch with a single pint of ice cream and dueling spoons, “Funny Girl” in the VCR, and maybe the promise of a sunrise together…
She’d made it to 12:24 before her eyes dropped, and she’d curled softly into his side. He told himself he’d only watch her for two minutes. Two minutes of watching her breathe deeply. Two minutes of watching her face relax as her eyelids twitched in sleep. Two minutes. Just two minutes.
At 1:17 he’d laid her carefully in her bed, pulling the covers over her exhausted body with a lingering kiss on her forehead, and the swelling words about people needing people whispering in the back of his mind.
42 days after he’d kissed her the first time, he got to kiss her again. Was it the fifth, sixth, or one-hundredth time, he couldn’t recall. With an empty bottle of wine between them, and case files strewn to the side he’d pressed her into her carpet and tasted the skin of her neck for the first time; felt the swell of her breast burn into his palm for the first time.
So many firsts still left to be discovered.
It’s been 45 days since he kissed her for the first time, and he finds himself standing in front of the display at the drug store, red and pink swarming his vision in muddled hues of brown to his color-blind eyes. The styrofoam cups balance precariously in his hand as he steps around the fray of frantic men picking over the remnants of the remaining cards, pulling the dying petals from the runt pickings that still remain in the black plastic pails.
With a knowing smile he pays the clerk for their coffee, pulling a red stemmed rose from the impulse-section at the register, and shuffles back to the running car where she greets him with a reproachful shake of her head. Girls are supposed to like red roses on Valentine’s Day, Scully.
“Mulder, Valentine’s Day is a contrived holiday by the greeting card and chocolate companies, meant to reduce the idea of romantic love to one special day full of Mylar balloons, chalky candy hearts and cheesy messages on cards,” she tells him with a lift of her brow.
He shoots her a smile as he keeps his eyes focused on the red light in front of him. “Can’t a guy buy his girlfriend a flower no matter the day?”
The light turns green. And her cheeks turn pink.
He catches her smelling the rose four times on the six minute drive back to the FBI building 45 days after he kissed her for the first time…
Not that he was counting.

Look. I really have to know whether or not Mulder went down on Scully that first day of the new millennium? Do you happen to have inside information? Thank you!
She stays over at Mulder’s place, ostensibly to make sure that he’s all right. It isn’t easy to navigate an arm in a sling, despite the practice she’s already given him. Realistically, she just can’t bring herself to leave him with his disheveled hair and his weary eyes. It’s been a long few days and all she wants to do is wrap herself in the blanket that smells like him on the couch that bears the imprint of his body. Her neck is sore and she’s tired to her bones. It might not technically be the new millennium, but it’s some sort of turning point. She wants to spend it with him, even if she’s drifting off to sleep in the hollow worn by his hip instead of in his temporarily incapacitated arms.
He’s muzzy from the painkillers as she helps him change out of his clothes, which are creased with dirt from the cellar. He sits quietly as she sponges him off with a damp washcloth, gazing at her with half-lidded eyes. She avoids his gaze. His eyes are too dizzying after the day they’ve had; his attention warms her more than a shot of whiskey and she’s susceptible to that slow burn at times like this, when his apartment feels like a sanctuary and their existence a victory. When she leans down, her hair catches in the stubble on his cheek. He brushes it back gently with his good hand and she nearly leans down and kisses him. But there’s no countdown now, and the lights are low: it would mean something else entirely to kiss him in the dim of his bedroom, something she couldn’t ascribe to external factors. In the glare of the hospital hallway as everyone on the East Coast mumbled through Auld Lang Syne, she could pretend the gentle pressure of his lips meant no more than happy holidays.
“Get some sleep,” she says, and he murmurs and lies down. She helps him pull up the covers.
“We can share,” he says into the pillow. “We did in Kansas, after that cow crash.”
“I’ll be fine,” she tells him. “It wouldn’t be good for your arm.”
“I’m willing to go against medical advice on this one,” he says, but he’s already closing his eyes. She takes the washcloth back into the bathroom and hangs it on the bar, looking longingly at the shower. For a moment, she considers borrowing a shirt and shorts from his drawer, but his clothes are laughably big on her, and she wasn’t the one rolling around in the dirt. Instead, she smooths his hair one last time and closes the door behind her on her way to the living room. She strips out of her pants and takes her bra off under her shirt, only after making sure the curtains are pulled shut across the window. She’s been shot at through that window, and spent her last hopes taping X’s on it, and watched snow fall past it on Christmas morning. When she thinks about the history of their apartments, it seems impossible that she still finds comfort either place, but every time she opens his door, it’s like wrapping herself up in a favorite sweater. She pulls the blanket off the back of the couch and wraps herself up in it. The wool is gently abrasive against her bare legs as she lies down. The aquarium bubbles at her head.
Her dreams are watery, filled with gentle green light. She and Mulder are swimming in a warm ocean. She remembers that psychologists have said that water dreams are about sex; her dream self blushes and dream Mulder smiles knowingly at her. “It’s all right,” he says. “We’re in this together.” He takes her hand and they swim deeper, trailing air bubbles, into a wreck that reminds her of the ruins of a cathedral. They drift into an alcove between the ribs of the ship and in the shadows, she kisses him, floating level so that no one has to stretch. Their arms twine around each other like seaweed; fish brush past them. They melt into each other.
A touch against her toes wakes her. She sits up, reaching automatically for her weapon, but it’s only Mulder, sitting on the floor between the couch and the coffee table. The light from the aquarium gives his bare chest a patina of verdigris.
“Dreaming?” he asks.
She sits up, pushing her hair out of her face, bracketing Mulder with her knees. She’s come up too fast out of the depths of slumber, like a diver with the bends. “Yeah,” she says finally. “I guess I was.”
“I wasn’t sure if those were noises of distress or not,” he says.
“I’m fine,” she tells him. “What are you doing up?”
“Pills wore off,” he says. “Plus I had to pee.”
“How’s the arm?” she asks.
“I’m fine,” he tells her, the corner of his lip tugging up. “Are you sure you’re all right?”
“Just a dream,” she says.
“What kind of dream?” he asks, trailing a fingertip over her bare toes.
“The regular kind,” she says, avoiding his eyes.
“Hmm,” he says, wrapping his fingers around her ankle. “How regular?”
It’s clear that he knows, if not the substance of her dream, certainly the gist. She wonders if she moaned his name in her sleep. Something about the level warmth in his gaze and the way the room closes in around them makes her bold. “Often enough,” she says.
He tugs gently at her ankle and she moves forward on the couch. The blanket falls away. “Scully,” he says, and lowers his lips to brush her knee as his eyes hold hers.
“Yes,” she says, as if he asked a question.
“I’m not sure we finished ringing in the millennium,” he says.
“It’s not the millennium,” she tells him, but he ignores her.
“I’ve heard the traditional gift for the third millennium is cunnilingus,” he says, and now she’s certainly blushing.
“I can’t even address the inaccuracies in that statement,” she says. “And I seriously doubt there’s a list of millennium gifts like there is for anniversary gifts.”
“Why risk it?” he asks, his lips against the inside of her thigh just above her knee. “You don’t want to start the year 2000 out wrong.”
“You make a compelling point,” she says, because there’s something safe about the couch and the dark and the moment that she can’t articulate. Maybe it’s that she knows he already knows that she wants him. Maybe the kiss in the hospital broke down the last of her flimsy barriers. Maybe it’s the dream-memory of floating together on equal footing. Maybe it’s the warmth of his lips and god, how long it’s been since anyone offered her anything like this.
“Out with the old,” he says. “In with the nude.”
“Mulder,” she groans.
“I liked it better the way you said it a minute ago,” he tells her.
“I guess you’ve got a goal to meet, then,” she says, and hooks her thumbs into her underwear, wriggling out of them under the corner of the blanket that still covers her. Mulder slides his good arm around her hips and brings her closer, kissing his way up her inner thigh. His stubble scratches faintly at her skin in a way that makes her tingle all over. He lets his fingers brush her folds; she bites her lip and nods and he parts them, a little murmur escaping him as he finds the slickness of her with his fingertips.
“It was a good dream,” she says in response to the question he hasn’t asked.
“So I gather,” he says, sliding his wet fingers up and down until she’s slippery with her own moisture.
“If you’re going to give me this traditional gift, Mulder, stop stalling.” Her stomach tenses as he grazes her clit.
“You sure?” he asks.
“For auld lang syne,” she says, and leans back into the couch as he nuzzles at her curls.
Mulder’s tongue is incredible. She’s always known that: he’s talked his way out of a thousand impossible situations, and his dexterity at shelling a sunflower seed is unparalleled. She’s fairly certain he can tie a cherry stem with his tongue. He’s unraveling her at an unimaginable rate, that’s certain. The tip of his tongue finds her clit with unerring precision, flicking and darting between her folds. He grunts appreciatively as her hips rise against his face.
“God, yes,” he says, and lets his tongue push into her.
She gasps. “I think that’s my line.”
“I’ll settle for hearing you say my name again,” he tells her, lifting his head and licking his lips before his face dips again between her legs and his tongue, oh god, his tongue is finding every spot she’s ever found herself and a few she didn’t know about. She’s pressed into the couch, her legs splayed wide, feeling reckless and wild. She delights in every sound he makes as he explores the folds and depths of her cunt. His tongue swirls over her clit and then pushes into her and then he’s back to her clit, sucking gently at first and then harder. She tries not to grip his shoulders with her knees as her hips jerk. He’s deft and he’s dedicated; it’s clear he’s relishing every second. She can feel the muscles in her thighs tensing and she almost regrets that she’s coming already. It’s been so long, so fucking long, since someone enjoyed her the way that Mulder does. When his arm is healed, she thinks, they’ll do this again (if not sooner), and she’ll let him spend hours teasing her, tempting her, wringing pleasure out of her until she’s bonelessly limp and sprawled across his bed. Now the muscles tighten in sequence up her legs, down her belly to the center of her, the center of everything, where Mulder has claimed his rightful position.
“Mulder,” she says, “God, yes, Mulder, I’m coming.”
His only response is to swirl his tongue even more firmly over her clit. She comes apart like a cloud of bubbles underwater, rising and rising, each nerve firing in a glint of light. Mulder holds her firmly with his free arm as her hips buck. He draws back to kiss the inside of her thigh and she shivers, both at the touch and at the loss of the pressure of his mouth. She draws the blanket over her lap and reaches for him, tugging him up onto the couch beside her.
“You’re very good at gifts,” she says.
“Too bad we won’t be around for the next millennium,” he says.
“Is it only cunnilingus for the millennium,” she muses aloud, “or oral sex in general?”
“I hear the real millennium is next year,” he tells her, “so we have a little while to figure that out.”
“Good,” she says.
“I think I owe you a few dates,” Mulder says.
“I don’t need this to be traditional,” she tells him, her head on his good shoulder. “We don’t have to go on dates.”
“What if I want to go on dates with you?” he asks.
“We’ll figure that out too,” she says. “And you can give me the same gift for every occasion.”
“Glad to hear it,” he says, and pulls her close.

Summary: After his mother’s death, he realizes his need for her goes deeper than he thought.
Note: This isn’t a new story. I realized that the one I have on my master list only contains HALF the story (sans smut on top of it). But, in finding the other half of the story, I realized how awfully written the original was, and so I’ve edited it. It’s still not perfect, but it’s better, and now with angsty sex. Enjoy. The original was called “I think I’m in love with you but I’m terrified”
“Just Once”
She holds his body as sobs wrack his large frame. Her petite form steadies his, anchoring him as the power of his sadness threatens to wash him away. Like the desperate acts of a drowning man, his hands claw at her - gripping and pulling at her shirt, drawing her closer, needing that contact.
Her breath is hot in his ear, murmuring soothing words, willing his heart to believe her - that everything will be alright, that his mother is in a better place, a place without pain and suffering. She kisses his temple, offering her lips to his weary soul. Her fingernails rake against his neck and her touch sends shivers down his arms, engulfing his skin in tingling warmth. Each swipe of her nails renews him, and he sighs into her touch.
“Come on, Mulder. You need to lie down,” she rasps. Her voice is thick in sympathetic emotion, and he nods, taking her hand, letting her take the lead. The grip on her hand is surprisingly tight, and she squeezes back in recognition. I’m here. I’m not going anywhere…
Sitting on the edge of his mattress, he watches as she moves around his room, tidying clothes off the bed and floor. Each time she passes, a trail of her scent bathes him in her wake. She smells of warm, musky vanilla, and he closes his eyes, swaying in the comforting scent. She’s only feet from where he sits and yet she feels like she’s miles away. Never before has he felt so close to the breaking point, and he reaches out and grabs her wrist, pulling her gently between the v of his legs.
He wants her close.
Needs her close.
“You okay?” she whispers against the top of his head, rubbing his arms rhythmically – soothing, and stroking his pain away. She moves to thread her fingers through his fine hair, and smiles when she feels him shiver and hum in response.

5 & 44 please? :)
5. hold my hand 44. puppy loveHe stands by the kitchen doorway watching as she struggles to reach the coffee, which has left its current home in the bottom shelf and climbed to the second. It’s too early for her to catch on to the fact that he’s moved it on purpose. He enjoys the way her t-shirt inches up to expose the soft skin on her lower back where he likes to settle his fingers. Or in this particular case, when his shirt inches up so that he can see the sweet swell of her ass peeking out from underneath the faded cotton. The sun is filtering in through the windows, lighting up the dust specks floating in the air like birthday glitter. He watches her make the coffee and thinks that maybe it is somehow October in June. The radio changes songs to Paul Anka’s Puppy Love and he has an overwhelming urge to ask her to dance, but chuckles and shakes his head instead. She turns when she hears him, holding a mug of steaming coffee in each hand. Her lips are still swollen from how he suckled on them a few minutes previous, her hair still wild and mussed. He watches her closely as she leisurely studies his bare torso, the grooves on his chest and abdomen, and feels like blushing, still. Again. To be under Scully’s careful sexual exploration, when her scrutiny isn’t medical…it’s exhilarating. She sets the mugs down and extends her hand to him while he closes the gap, pressing her against himself.“I’ve always been more partial to the Donny Osmond version,” he says and feels her grin against his collarbone. “Growing up, I was always more partial to Donny Osmond, period,” she admits and he wonders how far her partiality led her towards satisfying her teenage needs. If it was just a couple of daydreams or if there was some exploratory fingers involved. He feels himself get hard at the thought and kisses the top of her head. They start swaying to the music and he waggles his eyebrows at her suggestively, while offering his feet for her to step on. “Hop on, Scully.”She throws her head back and laughs. She will never hear the words again without feeling a joyful surge of desire. Whenever he tells her to get in the car, alone or in front of other people, and uses this particular phrase she will always remember that a few minutes ago he was lying on his back, fully erect, and had said the exact same thing before she lowered herself on him, gasping, and rode him to oblivion.

35) things you said that made me feel real
There are only so many small things inthe world. At least, with his arm bent under his ear and his cheek pressedagainst Scully’s motel pillow, that’s what it sounded like the NationalGeographic channel was preaching. The television played on low, humming withstatic.
“So many small things?” he said. Scullyglanced back at him from the edge of the bed, spine curved over some thickmanila folder. He tried to locate his glasses for a moment, as though theywould help him to hear better.
“Are you talking in your sleep or do Ineed to check you again for head trauma?”
Her hair was falling into her eyes, lipspressed against the rounded end of a pen. He squinted and located his glassesperched on her nose. She’d let them fall down a bit, and he wished he was awakeenough to remember and repeat the legend of Theia, goddess of sight, becausesometimes Scully did things like steal his reading glasses and then he didn’tknow how to talk to her like a normal person. Sometimes he thought if he died here,or his apartment, and they dusted for evidence, she’d be the first suspect. Herfingerprints scattered over everything like snow.
He gestured at the TV. “The show. It saidthere were only so many small things.”
She was the one who would know, becauseshe knew things like that. What the TV had meant and if the science was rightand when their flight out of Tennessee was tomorrow. If there were a select numberof small things in the world, she would be able to count them up for him. Sheleaned back so her palms held her weight, rolled her neck and her eyelidsfluttered.
“I haven’t been paying attention,” shesaid. She meant: I’ve been working. Her hair cut messily against her cheeks. There was no malice in it. Her voiceor her smile or the way she carried herself, all straight lines and cleanknees.
“Is it true?”
A sigh as she looked back at her work. “Iswhat true?”
“That there are only a certain number ofsmall things in the world.”
“There’s a certain number of everything,Mulder. Very little is truly infinite.”
On the TV, they were showing footage ofbabies and snails. Terrestrial animals. Those that crawl. So many crawlingthings? It was, he decided, a less interesting question. He watched her hunchcloser to the file resting in the cradle of her legs.
“But what about small things?” Hestretched out further across the bed, letting his knee come into contact withher hip. Sometimes his nearness unnerved her, like he was following stagedirections in a script she had forgotten to read. He’d touched her in littleways since the cancer, specific places, like localized anesthetic. She kept herhands to herself but his glasses on her nose.
“I don’t know.”
He made a little disbelieving sound thatmade her want to pinch him. His faith in her was gentle and heavy, slung warmlyacross her shoulders.
“They didn’t teach you about small thingsin school?”
“I’m a physicist, Mulder. ‘Small things’are not their own category. There’s mycobacteria, germs, things so minusculeyou can’t see them without a high powered magniscope. Atoms. There’s not justone definition.”
He went quiet, like he was consideringthis. “So it’s just a feeling? Like if I say, this motel is big but you’resmall – that’s not science, just intuition.”
She shrugged. “Basically.”
He allowed her just enough silence forthe next five minutes that she deluded herself into believing she was going tobe able to finish this report and then claim his motel bed as her own.
And then: “You’re not just a physicist.”
The pen made a clattering sound as sherapped it off his closest leg.
“Are you trying to make sure I don’t get thisreport done? Is it because you don’t want Skinner to know that you got hit overthe head with a pan by a 76 year-old woman you mistook for a Valkyrie?”
She turned back towards him. He looked upat the ceiling, letting his arms rest out wide on either side of him. He lookedpinned to Styrofoam, a study in faith, delusion and farsightedness.
“You’re also a doctor.”
Her sigh was long-suffering, like the kindthe husband on Bewitched used to letout at prime comedic moment. You see what I put up with? You think it’s easy tolive with someone who can wrinkle their nose and turn the world on its head?
“Yes,correct. Thank you.”
“And an FBI agent.”
“Are we listing my resume now?”
“And a sister and a daughter.”
This was the problem with him, with them, really. He did this, talked inanely at her and watched the ceiling like it hadstars on it and she put her files on the floor and surrendered into it. The Bewitched-husband sigh again. A soundlike water as the files slid off the slick motel covers. She rolled onto oneside at the foot of the bed, her socks brushing against the side of his ankles.Eyebrows raised like she couldn’t wait to hear the end of whatever story he wastelling.
He glanced down the length of the bed ather. Wondered if this qualified as consorting, falling asleep in her bed andtalking to her like this. He crossed is fingers over his stomach like he waspresenting hard evidence.
“You’re my best friend.”
There were times when Scully looked athim with a fierceness he couldn’t place, some unmoored intensity. He remembers brushingpast her in his mother’s hallway, her cheeks flushed and angry even though hewas the one who had been slapped. He wished he’d known her when he was a kid. There is no good way to explain that you wanted to grow up and then grow oldwith someone. Wished for a backwards progression of love.
Her cheeks went peach colored, anunfinished red. She ducked her head. “Mulder.”
He smiled, the hesitant, half-way he didwhen she checked him for injuries, prodded for broken bones. Waited to see howbadly he was hurt. “Scully.”
It reminded her of grade school, theblacktop sincerity of it. She pictures Mulder at ten, eleven. Curious and tall, looking at her with the same smile. Taking her hand and dragging her into theforest after him, explaining with wide-eyes that they were looking for smallthings. Things to keep in their pockets and up their sleeves. Her grade schoolself has too many freckles and a gap in her teeth, but her adult voice speaksthrough her lips: There are a select number of small things in the known world,Mulder, but no science in it. No textbook definition of what criteria qualifieda small thing. Of how many little things could add up, multiply, becomesomething larger, too big to hold or understand.
In her head, they were young and smalland strange together. Just for a moment and then it was gone.
She smiled downat the ugly pattern on the motel bed, intersecting lines, weaving tighter andtighter. “You’re my best friend, too.”
He nodded when she looked back up, closedhis eyes like he was satisfied. She watched him for a moment, her cheek on herfist. The TV crackled and whirred through a whole commercial break before she turnedback. Picked up her wayward files, pushed his glasses higher up on her nose andtried to count all the small things in the universe.(send me a things you said/dialogue prompt)

“Now when convention and science offer us no answers, might we not finally turn to the fantastic as a plausibility?”
