As he passes people on the pavement, he looks at them out of the corner of his eye. He wonders if what is happening to him is happening to any of them. He wonders if this body has walked past any of them before: yesterday, last month, ten years ago. He wonders what would happen if he politely tried to stop each of them in turn and ask, Excuse me, so sorry to bother - do you know me? Do you understand why I am here?
