the science of learning
understanding how your brain learns can help you optimize your study habits and make learning more efficient and enjoyable
how the brain learns
your brain is a network of neurons that form new pathways or strengthen existing ones when you learn.
neuroplasticity -> allows your brain to adapt and learn throughout life.

spaced repetition
...is reviewing information over increasing intervals of time.
this technique helps move information from short-term memory to long-term memory, making it stick better.
Anki or Quizlet use this technique for efficient studying

active learning
passive studying (re-reading) is less effective. use active learning methods:
testing yourself - with flashcards or quizzes
teaching others - explaining concepts out loud
turning notes into visual aids - like mind maps or concept diagrams
the more actively you engage, the better you retain information!

chunking
the brain can only hold a limited amount of information in working memory at once
break large information into smaller, manageable "chunks."
ex: group numbers into sets (like phone numbers).
˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · . ༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · . ༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · . ༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · .༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌
the importance of sleep
sleep consolidates memories and strengthens neural connections + filters out irrelevant info, helping key details stick
studying before bed - improves retention after a good night's rest.
˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · . ༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · . ༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · . ༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · .༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌
multisensory learning
the more senses you use when learning, the better you’ll remember.
using visual aids, audio, and even physical movement can help reinforce what you’re trying to learn.
creating colorful notes, speaking aloud, or even walking while reviewing flashcards can make a big difference in memory retention.
˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · . ༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · . ༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · . ༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌ ✧˚ · . ˚ · .༉‧₊˚. ‘˚ ͙۪۪̥◌
growth mindset
... believing you can improve is crucial to learning effectively.
embrace mistakes as part of the learning process – they’re essential for growth!
focus on effort and progress, not perfection

The exact nature of long COVID is still coming to light, but we just got some of the best evidence yet that this debilitating condition stems from a brain injury. Using high-resolution scanners, researchers at the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford have shown microscopic, structural abnormalities in the brainstems of those recovering from COVID-19. Signs of brain inflammation were present up to 18 months after first contracting the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

I don't think people in the notes understand what this tweet is saying. It's not saying it's impossible to be born with a mental health issue, but that the issue isn't set in stone. Bipolar disorder can be trauma induced. Schizophrenic people in less individualistic, more accepting societies hear kinder voices. These are actual things you can look up.
I thought for the longest time I would feel nothing but suffering because of the dominant narrative surrounding mental illness. My parents were literally told by a psychologist I am "a severe case" and have no future. But guess what? When I got away from my abusive parent, it was incredible how much became more manageable than before. I'll never be "normal" or even be able to live alone, but I feel better than before. And I need everyone to know there's hope for you when you never expect it, even if you were in part "born like that".
Anthropologist Tanya Luhrmann found that voice-hearing experiences of people with serious psychotic disorders are shaped by local culture –
this was a fascinating read- its common knowledge that trans people(especially transsexuals)’s needs in medicine are overlooked, but since neuroscience is such a new field i wasnt aware of this. i need to read through the author’s sources later because… mm. knowlage.
this manga panel speaks to my soul
Strange that it never occured to me. There are times I've been so upset that I've stamped around while cussing, that I've lain flat on the floor and groaned for as long as I had breath, that I've ranted my frustration aloud in an unhinged monologue, that I've swung my limbs about in a fury. All until I'd vented enough to just ... resume my normal life.
And if I'd had not the privacy of my home, I'd either have had to bottle that all up ... or open it all up where the public could scrutinize my every move. It really is a privilege to not be constantly on display like that.
[ID: tweet by Lydia Kiesling @ lydiakiesling, "Housed people have the privilege of having their worst moments in private; unhoused people don't. That gives some people the mistaken impression that the person they see acting belligerent on the street is and will be that person every single moment of their life."]

it's so wild how our brain's try to categorize after traumatic events. like you miraculously survived a massive house fire but right before it began you were listening to a specific song and now you cant hear that song without getting extremely anxious. your brain doesn't understand the complexity of the trauma BUT it knows that song was involved so dont listen to it ok
the thing about this is usually this is a beneficial effect, your brain will analyze a situation afterwards and go 'okay. setting event > catalyst > outcome' and set up a way to avoid those circumstances in the future (you ate too many oreos and got sick, now you get nauseous from oreos) but in a freak accident or an unforeseen tragedy there typically isnt set events to avoid, so your brain goes
every time i see someone talk broadly about how mental illness is ‘being destigmatized’ i’m like speak for yourself buddy. some of us still have brain disorders that if you google them the first 1000 responses are like ‘how to explode people with this condition with deadly bombs and fire and then douse the ashes in acid so they dont rise again craving the flesh of the living’
'love is all we have' well i dont know about you guys but i also have articles and pdfs
