how someone sets their boundaries has absolutely nothing to do with censorship.

censorship is when someone tries to control other people what they can or can’t create and consume.

censorship is not about a random person disabling their own comments section for whatever reason. censorship is not about people blocking other people on social media as their way of setting boundaries and curating their internet experience. censorship is not about disrespecting other people’s boundaries and censorship is not about tolerating it when other people disrespect you or your boundaries.

Like, I totally get having one interpretation and favoring that. But personally, when I watched, I kept changing my mind every few seconds (and when I later found out how the director chose to build those early scenes, this made sense! he filmed multiple takes, with the lead actress directed in some to act as if she was interested in Bear and others to act as if she wasn't into him at all, and bits from these different takes were all spliced together into the final edit), and it occurred to me through the rest of the film that this had to have been deliberate. We don't get a clear and unambiguous answer from Nikki pre-wish because it absolutely doesn't matter--the movie is from Bear's POV, and he's too much of a coward to ask her out and risk hearing a 'no', so he makes a wish instead that ultimately takes her choice away so she can't say 'no' but she also can't say 'yes'.

But I have seen so many people insist that their interpretation of the film is the only possible correct interpretation, and the vibes I get especially from the 'she OBVIOUSLY wasn't interested in Bear at all and if you think she was then you're the problem/a creep/steeped in rape culture' are that many people think the film would somehow be less horrific (or what happens to Nikki less awful) if there was even the slightest chance that had the MC just fucking asked her out, she might have said yes.

The film makes the point that whatever Nikki's answer would have been, it doesn't matter and we will never know, because the choice was stripped away from her. This is not somehow less awful (or the sex they had less rape) if Nikki might've said yes if given the choice! Scares me a little that so many people seem not to understand this.

Yes because an army of software engineers working around the clock, losing sleep, and busting ass till the last minute prevented it from happening.

One of the root problems of our society is a refusal or inability by media to articulate that all those “it’s gonna be an apocalypse” disasters were not disasters because we collectively did something about them.

The good news is this is actually quite correctable. I maintain my firm belief that we as humans are capable of solving almost all of our problems, when we decide to do so.

And I still think that’s going to happen. I don’t know when or how, but I do know that abandoning hope won’t help bring it about.
