what the fuck
sweet, might base an agricultural civilisation on this river, hope it behaves itself
might just fuck around and find out
Diversity win! This river has ADHD
Nile: You would not believe how long term you have to mismanage agriculture on my banks to start experiencing soil depletion. I will always be here for you Egypt.
Huang He: *kicks in the door* FUCK YOUR DYNASTY IT'S FAMINE TIME!!!
I took two semesters of Chinese history in college. The first thing the professor started with was “getting to know the rivers, Yangtze and the Yellow Rivers. You need to know them because they will play very important roles in the history of China. The Yangtze has been crucial to trade, movement, culture and more. The Yellow river, the Yellow River can’t be trusted as you will repeatedly see.”
If you got stuck on a question during a test or whatever you could start with “the Yellow river jumped the banks causing instability and chaos that quickly spread” and would be correct more times than you would be incorrect.
I love geographical chats when it completely devolves into dragging a landform.
i genuinely had no idea the yellow river switched which side of a fucking mountain it went to
that's not A mountain, seebs. That's a mountain range about the size of florida.
i... thought it was a mountain range? but then i thought "no i'm probably exaggerating in my head"
god damn yellow river go home you are drunk
oh shit the yellow river forgot where home is and is just wandering around yelling at windows
Can A Geographer Plz Explain How?
Not a geographer but a big nerd.
The yellow river has a LOT of sediment in it from the Loess plateau (mostly from soil erosion). It’s decreased in recent years, but it has so much sediment that it raises the level of the riverbed constantly. The yellow river also deposits so much sediment that it has dramatically changed the coastline of the Bohai sea over the past few thousand years (VERY fast on the geologic timescale).
Anyways the riverbed is constantly rising. Water will go the path of least resistance. When the riverbed gets higher (and closer to/higher than other areas), it gets very unstable. Add in a little normal fluctuations in water level and rainfall, and then suddenly there’s a better path. And the water follows the new lowest point. Think of that tiktok(?) of those people digging a little trench on a beach for a river, which quickly gets a LOT bigger as the water diverts to that path. That’s similar what’s happening with the river choosing the path of least resistance.
The higher upstream the instability occurs, the further the course is likely to change. Not to mention, the yellow river exits the mountains onto the low-lying North China Plain and has to go either north to the Bohai Sea or South to the Yellow Sea because Shandong is right in the way
Just like. There is so much fucking sediment in this river it’s insane.

#100DaysofProductivity — Day 2
so… it’s been a while. (looks around embarrassed)
life got extremely stressful and things happened, but i have been working behind the scenes! i completed a research stay in south korea (first time ever flying long-haul AND living abroad alone! yay me!), participated in some conferences and made some noticeable progress on my phd.
right now it’s that time of a phd where you start writing and suddenly everything you’ve ever read comes to mind and you have to organise a million sources for one tiny paragraph. but im good, this is what i love to do! and this is also why i’ve decided to come back to the 100daysofproductivity thingy. i REALLY need to lock tf in.
how have you been? any interesting developments this year?
see you around! 💜
26.02.26 ✨ i'm convinced my master's thesis advisor is an actual angel. how did i get so lucky.

currently studying prokaryotic transcription (molecular biology)
is it just me who thinks that biochem is easier than mol bio😅

not feeling my best lately, but grateful for quiet moments, coffee, and grace from my team during times like this (>_<)/~~♡
Everything is worth trying, even if it may not work out in the end.
