Now I love comically large Adrian as much as the next guy, but hear me out on the potential of a comically small Adrian
that being said I'm not actually always opposed to conflict free fluff I am just opposed to the characters having their claws filed down for it. you can stick them in a coffee shop au it should just still feel like you sat the two worst most insane people on earth in a starbucks
are these what the kids are calling *checks notes* magical girls?

i think naddpod in general always does such a good job of integrating dnd mechanics into story and theming... like bahumia being built on the idea of a dnd party and having all its conflicts built on that vs eldermourne having 9 pcs total which makes it feel like more people have more power in the setting than just the original party members
another project hail mary observation:
I noticed that Grace was looking at golden plaques with inscription and realized they look like something made based off the Voyager Golden Record, made by Astrophysicist and Cornell University professor Carl Sagan and singer John Lennon. It was sent out in the probes Voyager 1 and 2, I believe. It has a message etched on it which says, "To the makers of music, all worlds, all times."
For reference, pictures below show the Voyager Golden Record.
People keep talking about the science in PHM like yeah, obviously. Math saves the world, equations translate the universe, whatever.
But what gets me is how hard the story leans into something else: Music!!!!
Like the whole movie quietly argues that sure, math is universal because it is precise. It lets completely different species understand each other.
But music is what lets them feel each other.
When we first see Grace's old memories, the first one shown was him teaching the kids about soundwaves being affected by frequency. This is probably a foreshadowing that it will mean so much in the next few parts of the plot. Specifically Rocky.
Rockyās language is not framed like cold data, even if it technically is. It is patterned, tonal, almost harmonic. Grace does not just decode it, he recognizes it. There is a difference. Even in the book, he always mentions how Rocky drops an octave when he expresses sadness and grief.
And that is why it hits that even someone like Eva Stratt, who reduces everything to outcomes, to sacrifice, to necessity, can still be pulled into something as unnecessary as music.
The movie soundtrack uses songs in many different languages, and it quietly circles back to the voyager golden record. That record was created in case any life beyond earth ever finds it, to teach them what humanity is. In the same way, the music in the film becomes a kind of message too. It represents human diversity, culture, and emotion, everything that exists beyond just Grace and his perspective, showing what it means to be human to someone who is not human at all.
There are 27 songs from all around the world put in the Golden Record btw. <3
Science lets different life forms understand each other, yes. But something like music exists on a smaller, quieter level. It does not need translation in the same way. It just needs recognition.
And maybe that is the point, that even at the edge of everything, when all you have left is survival and logic and numbers, the thing that still reaches across the gap is not just understanding. It is resonance.
Music transcends all cultures and now, extraterrestrial life! ^°^
this came to me in a dream
Some Project Hail Mary as text posts because I havenāt been able to stop thinking about this book or movie

Because poor Dr. Grace was never meant to be up there with a dead crew and no memories :,)

I think people forget that Stratt amnesticized Grace with the goal that Ilyukina and Yao would be there to help him, yāknow NOT DIE, and then THEY DIED before he woke up.
So like she gets the recordings and realizes Yao and Ilyukina are dead before he wakes up so heās got no pilot, no engineer, and no memories.
And then you also have to remember that the EXISTENCE of these recordings and the fact they were accompanied by the Taumoeba means that an amnesticized Grace somehow managed to save earth without a pilot or engineer and shoddy memory that only vaguely gives him enough to work with as he works.
Like what the fuck man.
I really do think that to Eridians, the most alien thing about us is our obsession with space.
Space (and stars) are a much newer concept to Erid, at least relative to us. They cannot perceive stars. They can't even see their own sky.
And then here we are, utterly obsessed. The number of songs, movies, and TV shows that reference stars, the moon, our sun, it's light, astronauts, space ā we can hardly go five minutes without bringing up at least one of those things. NONE of them are things Eridians have an established affinity for; to them, they're scientific concepts, and that's pretty much it.
And yet, stars are one of the first things our kids learn how to draw. We have a specific name for the connections we trace between them, and those constellations have been built into thousands of years of our history. We fought a proxy war based on who could get to them the fastest. I absolutely believe that, to Erid, this would be our defining characteristic above and beyond anything else.
It's almost clichƩ. How thematically on point it must be from their perspective, that an alien from a species so in love with the stars was the one to show up and save theirs.
