The more I think about it, I am intrigued by the idea of post series Summer being the overprotective parent when it comes to Ruby and Yang getting partners(?) before she comes around to respecting and liking them rather than Taiyang. Summer also just being madly overprotective in general.
The mental image of Summer glaring at Blake and Oscar behind Ruby and Yang’s backs for a while (before she softens to them), but not saying anything because she knows Ruby and Yang would be furious while Taiyang tries to be an outlet for Summer and listens to her rant behind closed doors while being apologetic to Blake and Oscar for getting the short end with Summer is amusing to me.
Summer’s not vicious or mean to them, but she’s a bit passive aggressive with them, and Ruby and Yang catch on and are upset, until Oscar and Blake respectively talk them off the edge of being angry with her.
Taiyang knows better than to speak on behalf of Summer, so he’s being apologetic while trying to make them feel welcome. (He’s trying to be a mediator at least until they’re ready to talk it out).
Summer: Of all the people in the world they could’ve chosen, Yang chose someone who left her in the past *gets Raven PTSD*, and Ruby chose an incarnation of that man!
Taiyang: Oh come on, honey, you’re being too harsh. Blake was a scared teenager back then, and besides, she’s been nothing but the best to and for Yang since they reunited! Yang loves her, and Blake’s sworn she would never leave Yang again. And Oscar’s a great kid, and he’s not just an incarnation of Oz, he’s learning to be his own person now. He looks out for Ruby, and he adores her! Seriously! That boy has the subtlety of a brick through a glass window! I don’t think he could hide his affection if he tried!
Blake and Oscar understand that Summer’s just protective over Ruby and Yang (understandably) and are appreciative of Tai’s attempt of mediating until they agree to sit down and have a conversation (without Ruby and Yang present at Blake and Oscar’s insistence even if the sisters are outside the door with their ears pressed to it to the surprise of no one) to hash things out.
Eventually, Summer does warm up to them, it takes a bit longer with Oscar, but she starts respecting him when she sees he doesn’t hesitate to stand up for himself when it comes to staying by Ruby’s side and really seeing how happy and safe Oscar makes her feel. (For all that Oscar lacks subtlety with his feelings, Ruby is truly not that much better once she actually starts addressing them for what they are.)
Once Summer starts warming up to them though, she starts caring about them and seeing them as her family too.
Qrow and Raven are side eyeing all of this nervously until the tensions settle because they know how the whole family is a pot of different temperaments lol.
Once Summer starts warming up to Oscar more, Qrow thinks it’s all good until Summer finds out about Qrow punching Oscar and he’s subjected to almost being shaken like a rag doll once.
Raven laughs at him for being spooked until she’s reminded that Summer actually did almost strangle her for letting giving Cinder a clear shot to fireball Ruby.
