everyone in the notes like "that's what we were already saying" missed the point here entirely bc what im getting at is not just being disappointed in yourself for not living up to expectations. it's the unspoken part where "not living up to expectations" = "doing as well as people i always looked down on, working jobs that i thought were beneath me, still feeling bitter about it years later bc i havent let go of my elitism and i still kinda think i inherently deserve better"

actually, growing up is feeling like i turned sixteen two days ago. i’ve been eighteen for years. fifteen year olds seem so young. wasn’t i fifteen just a few weeks ago? all my friends and i are still twelve. i’m closer to thirty then to being a baby. i never got to be a kid. i never grew past eight. i can’t talk to my mom. i want to sit in her lap forever. the week is going by so slow. an entire year has passed. i want to decide everything for myself. i need someone to tell me exactly what to do.

Reminder that puffins are extremely social and like to fit in with their friends, so they will adopt mannerisms and interests of the group. So there is a good chance this little guy is trying to be friends with the photographer by showing his interest in the camera.
