It’s easy to get into the habit of overworking when you want to do your best in something you love doing. During my second year, I got into an unhealthy habit of overworking to help get away from my personal problems. As long as I was working, it gave me something to think about other than missing my home and family. However, those nights of staying in the labs until 6am, and that lack of a healthy diet began affecting me. In high school, I often worked out and ate healthy, thanks to my family’s life style. It was hard to maintain that during my second year when you barely have time to cook for yourself and work out. I started breaking out in acne and gaining weight, and I didn’t really like that I was “letting myself go.” During my third year, I made it a goal to resume to my original life style and try to find ways to replicate my old ways in a new place. I made it a REQUIREMENT to go to the labs from 8am-6pm to imitate “work hours” and have the time between 6pm-10pm to work out and eat a healthy dinner. I also used that extra time to find things other than art that I enjoyed doing, such as writing, language learning, or just spending time with those I gave a shit about. I don’t feel like it is hard to work hard — but I do feel it is hard to find balance and maintenance. As much as you love doing your work, you should also learn to love and care for the worker doing the work. (Aka you, bitch.)
