The Five Minutes for Freedom series is a collection of small, step-by-step walkthroughs designed to help you take concrete political action in support of the principles of We With Us. The articles in the series are designed to be read and their steps followed in order, as later posts frequently build on earlier ones. A chronological index of all posts in the series can be found here. While this information is targeted primarily at US readers, we welcome readers from all countries and encourage you to adapt these strategies as necessary for your jurisdiction.
Todayâs 5M4F task has three very simple steps.
Step 1: create a document somewhere handyâyou will use this document with most articles in this series, so put it somewhere you can edit it easily, and find it frequently (whether thatâs a paper journal, in Stickies, in Google Docsâyour call). Mine is in Google Docs. I called it âFive Minutes for Freedomâ, and I starred it so I can find it easily.
You will need 3 lines for todayâs entry. If your document is digital, you can copy-paste the following:
US Senator: (Name) [party] | (Tel) | (Email) | (Contact name) | (Contact dates)
US Senator: (Name) [party]Â | (Tel) | (Email) | (Contact name) | (Contact dates)
US Representative: (Name) [party]Â | (Tel) | (Email) | (Contact name) | (Contact dates)
For now, you will only fill in the names, party affiliations, telephone numbers, and email addresses. If you canât use the phone, replace â(Tel)â with â(Addr)â. Leave âContact nameâ and âContact datesâ alone for now. Also, donât worry if this information will change in Januaryâwe will post a reminder to update it then, and we need you to start making contact now!
If you know your senators (Step 2) and representative (Step 3), and how to find their information, enter their names, party affiliations (you can always use D/R/I if you donât want to write out Democrat/Republican/Independent), the telephone numbers/postal addresses of their field offices near you, and their email addresses (or links to their online contact pages) into your document. Then, once youâre done, check in to let your fellow humans know youâre fighting for them by responding to the poll at the top of the post!
If you need some help finding your senators and representativeâs contact info, thereâs a full walkthrough behind the cut.

Hi guys! I know I already reblogged the We With Us Statement of Purpose and emblem info posts last night, so I apologize for this blog becoming an all-politics blog (not forever, I promise), but this is a really important thing!
As a lot of you know, I think, I have problems with mental illness, and Iâm also a grad student and daughter to aging parents and job hunter and just general all-around busy person, so I understand how overwhelming trying to take outside-the-internet-box political action can be on a couple different axes. So Iâm going to be breaking down some key techniques, step by step, a little at a time, over at We With Us. This post is the first of that series.
My goal is to have every post in the series offer up a single, concrete task, and to have that single concrete task require no more than five minutes of your time That way, if you have five minutes, whenever you have five minutes, you can do a little something to help, without feeling like itâs too big, or youâre too small, or that your five minutes count for nothing at all. Your five minutes are important. You are important. â¤ď¸ And together we can make real, concrete changeâfive minutes at a time.

My dog thinks itâs a window, though.

@solikerez requested Dick + Damian through the years
BTW, the high five was invented in 1977 which means your parents probably didnât grow up with it.
For real though Glenn Burke, inventor of the high five was a gay black player in the 70s, and the Dodgers tried to get him to marry a beard and their manager got mad when he befriended the managerâs gay son before being traded to the Athletics, probably for being gay. In Oakland, the rumors of homosexuality followed him and manager Billy Martin started using homophobic slurs in the clubhouse and homophobic behavior from other players lead to an early retirement for the promising young star at 27. Â After retiring from baseball he introduced the high five to the Castro district of San Franscio where the high five became a symbol of gay pride and identification. ESPN wrote a long form piece about it which I recommend reading, itâs got some homophobic slurs in it although not presented positively.
A few appendices:
Although he was unceremoniously drummed out of Major League Baseball, Burke became the star shortstop for the local Gay Softball League, and even dominated in the Gay Softball World Series, as well as medaling in the 100 and 200 meter sprints in the inaugural 1982 Gay Games. Unfortunately, Burke also picked up a cocaine habit and had his leg and foot crushed in an accident. He spent much of his final years homeless in the Castro, and died from AIDS complications in 1995, but he was in the first class of inductees to the Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame, and his High School retired his jersey number.
The Dodgers Manager in question was Tony Lasorda, whose son âSpunkyâ died of AIDS complications in 1992 although Lasorda maintains that it was cancer. Likewise, despite the High Five becoming a symbol of the 1980 Dodgers team, Lasorda maintained and continues to this day to maintain to not know its origin. Itâs possible that this isnât a deliberate slight to Burke, but given his homophobia in other matters thatâs a hard benefit of the doubt to give.
The Athletics have, in the years since, attempted to make up for some of the wrongs they committed in this story. When Glenn revealed publicly that he was living with AIDS, the As moved in and helped him financially. Burke was honored publicly at Pride Night at the park in 2015 and his brother was invited to throw the first pitch.
Burke was happy to see the high five catch on, spilling out of sports and into the small joys of every day life. He died believing that the high five was his legacy. Next time you high five your friend, remember that the high five came from Glenn Burke.
Npr has a dope story on it

Watch: Leslie Jones gave a touching tribute to Whoopi Goldberg about why representation matters

Just beautiful <3 @lemonade-time
oh my god. Imagine being Whoopi and hearing that though.
Well, when I was nine years old Star Trek came on,â Goldberg says. âI looked at it and I went screaming through the house, âCome here, mum, everybody, come quick, come quick, thereâs a black lady on television and she ainât no maid!â I knew right then and there I could be anything I wanted to be.â - See more at: http://www.startrek.com/database_article/goldberg-whoopi#sthash.gKeuf3XI.dpuf
Thatâs three generations. Nichelle Nichols to Whoopi Goldberg to Leslie Jones.

The Expanse Season 1
âEither you commit to diversity, and itâs just a fact of how you do business, how you live, or youâre not diverse,â Franck says. âYou canât say âI know, weâll be diverse, weâll gift one black part.â That sort of tokenism is not diversity. To be truly diverse, you have to start at the top. Our production company, one of the presidents is a black man. The president of our TV division is a woman. Our writerâs room is pretty close to fifty-fifty, men and women. Itâs not like there were checkboxes, the attitude was just, âLetâs hire an interesting array of voices.ââ That attitude extends to the script and the screen. âWeâre not trying to champion anyone in particular,â Abraham says. âWeâre telling a story, and in the course of the story, there are people who arenât all white guys. Whatâs important is what the Zuni woman is doing, not that sheâs a Zuni.â - How SyFyâs The Expanse cast its multiracial future.
