(Set up: We’re a group of about 10 adventurers, and we had 2 rangers with us. One of them (Ranger1) is the silent type, the other one (Ranger2) is a bit new to the genre, but not enough to warrant meta-help from the DM) DM: So, the group sets up camp farther from the road; who gets night shift? Group: Might be best if the rangers take turns. Ranger2: Ok, Ill keep watch first.
*DM rolls encounter*
DM: Alright, roll Spot
*Ranger2 rolls high*
DM: So, you’re on the tree, watching the nearby forest, when you hear some noises
Ranger2: Ok
DM:…. The brushes between you and the forest move a bit
Ranger2: I see
DM:………… You hear voices talking in a language you cant understand coming from the brushes.
Ranger2: Aham
*Group gets tense, avoiding metaplay*
DM: …DUDE, you see a pair of ears sprout from the brushes, and the talking continues.
Ranger2: Heh…
*DM facepalms*
DM: You know, this means your camp is being watched. Are you going to do something about that?
Ranger2: Oh…. Ill shoot an arrow at the brushes
(This proceeded into a combat where half the party was entangled in one of the tents, because the enemies attacking us missed Ranger2 and hit the wood that kept the tent up. Ranger2, in another future scene, died from poisoning, because he had forgotten he had Remove Poison)
