The same witch who once upon a time fell in love with a young Sakumo Hatake and also got gently spurned away.

Once had been embarrassing but twice? She would not stand for such humiliation.

So she cursed him to even longer teeth and a muzzled face. To long spindly limbs that ended in sharp wicked claws, pointed ears that could hear from miles and sharp fur as silver as his hair.

And since he was a monster he could only belong in a cage that was made of the castle and his garden. Him and his servant condamned and isolated and forgotten of all humanity for as long as the curse stand.

But a curse can only be made with conditions. Even more for such a powerful one

By his 25th birthday love needs to be found and reciprocated or he will lose his humanity and his servants their lives.

It's Kushina, young mage who saves the servant from also falling pray to the curse by catching a loophole and turning them into object. She's not powerful enough to break it and she's furious and saddened about it.

Kakashi is.. well he only regret not saving them. He regrets that they will die with him because he knows the curse will stay unbroken. And now his own tutor Minato and his wife Kushina, his young assistant Itachi and the Haruno couple who oversees the garden just lost a son, a brother, a daughter who were out and now forgot about them.

As such 6 years passed and Kakashi is 3 short seasons away from 25.

Umino Iruka is 22 years old. 22 years old, learning how to be a teacher for young kids like Kohari Umino was and an orphan. An orphan raising three other orphans.

And Iruka adores his rag tag little siblings and even in harsh times, when he lost his parents they have been his biggest reason to get up every day.

Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura are loud and always quarrelling and probably as mischievous as he was at their age but they loves him and they loves each other deeply.

Which is why the moment they don't come back home when dark as already started to fall he immediately run searching for them. Naruto may be able to do some tricks but most of his magic his unstable and there is no one to teach him in the village. Sasuke and Sakura are both very smart in their own right but they are still children.

And that's how he ends up bargaining his life against theirs to a monster of harsh words and falsely lazy attitude. That's how he ends up living in a strange castle he never remembers having heard of, surrounded by strange magical talking objects who happily welcomes the four new habitants.

(Because the kids refuses to lives him there those darling little snots.)

That's how Iruka starts reading about spells and runes and seals and everything under the umbrella of magic because nobody seems to want (or be able to? Iruka isn't so sure) answers his questions but something foul is clearly afoot.

And the master of the place may be an introverted old grump with horribly perverted reading preferences he clearly shows cares towards those talking people-object and even towards the children well being.

(Hidden under a metric ton of sarcasm but still. Iruka wouldn't have been so good at raising those three and taking care of the small class in the village if he wasn't so good at observing people)

Anyway Iruka is invested and the kids are too. They are invested and getting attached to the place and the people and all the weird quirkiness of it all.

As for the end? Oh well you know.

it stems from a game of telephone played among diplomats and shinobi alike, whispered behind flutes of sparkling wine and event pamphlets.

he's a trusted figure in konoha, gaara tells kankuro as iruka gives the keynote speech, he's important to naruto, and kakashi values and holds him dear.

he's someone the rokudaime holds dear, is what kankuro tells a mist shinobi at the open bar as they watch iruka mingle with the new daimyo of the land of wind. he trusts him deeply.

only for that shinobi, now tipsy, to tell his comrade the rokudaime cares for him deeply.

and his comrade, just as tipsy, jokes, oh? they're lovers? though her affect is not quite sarcastic enough for the passing and aged ears of the tsuchikage, who takes this whisper as fact.

and the tsuchikage, ever the traditionalist but trying his best to be open minded, takes lovers to mean married and as such asks one of his aides to prepare a newly wed care package for iruka, a customary gift in his village, to be delivered upon his return to the land of fire.

the raikage catches wind of this, and refusing to be outdone in his own village, hastily has his people bring out a case of their most expensive spirits and proposes a toast to konoha and kakashi and iruka's future. may the bond between our villages be as strong and devoted as that between you both! which iruka accepts graciously, albeit confused about his phrasing.

things continue to snowball from there-- because why else would the hokage send some random teacher abroad to such an important event, and with such a large entourage of assistants and anbu guards? what, other than a plethora of experience gained from a lifelong dedication to teaching, as well as astute and compelling ideas on education and child care, could this middling but charming chuunin possibly provide? especially at a ribbon cutting for a new academy and the unveiling of an international student exchange program between the villages (that iruka all but spearheaded himself)? the only explanation was that they were married and this was one of his spousal duties, of course!

the event comes to an end and the mizukage invites iruka to tour their new medicinal gardens in the spring.

.... the tsuchikage reminds him to remain steadfast and loyal in his new duties and to serve his hokage well.

.... gaara congratulates him with an all too earnest smile.

.... and the raikage hands him a tin of ointment.

for pain and pleasure, the raikage tells him, which makes iruka think for just one moment that he might be hitting on him, until the man adds, which I'm sure Kakashi will appreciate.

and that fills iruka with all sorts of thoughts involving kakashi alone and then kakashi with the hulking man before him and-- well, as enticing as that was, it makes his chest swirl with an unpleasant heat that he recognizes as jealousy.

iruka leaves with the tin held tightly in his hand and arrives in konoha none the wiser. he walks into kakashi's office and finds him surrounded by flowers and gifts and letter, a teasing smile on his face.

it still doesn't click for iruka-- he thinks he's missed some celebration, or misremembered kakashi's birthday, somehow. but his first thought isn't to ask or question. his first thought is in the palm of his hand.

iruka slams down the tin on kakashi's desk. are you involved with the raikage? he asks. and kakashi, to his credit, blinks twice before the smile on his face shatters, distorting into something shocked and distraught.
