To me the hound and iruka dynamic when their younger is very much "i hate what you stand for, not you specifically."

Iruka hates the fact the ANBU dont help the commun people in his eyes, that they didn't protect his family in kyuubii atack and is extreamly jealous of the attentiom they get (and also sort of pity them. but you wont ever catch him saying that.). Meanwhile, hound is astonished over how this kid is allowed to get away with things that would get any other person, like him, killed and on trial for treason. He cannot comprehend the fact this child is well, a child. He enbys him and hates him.

So for me, their dynamic is a very much a "Bothered by you, asshole, who also takes care of me and helps me gro as a person."

Iruka who puts glitter in Hounds sword hikt after Hound is mean about the commun peoples ability to whistand tragedy. Hound who tells iruka to open his eyes and that his not the only one that hows through hardship by simply showing up injured to one of their talks. Iruka who swears up and down he doesn't worry when he doesn't see Hound around for more than 2 weeks. Hound who dreams of sharingan eyes, orange jackets and goggles mixing with deep brown eyes, stiff at the collar chunin uniforms and ink splashes on hands.

They go around echother the entire time slowly getting closer, and Iruka developing a crush/deep fondness for Hound, and hound a curiosity of him. Which results in more pranks, more splashed ink, more visits to the Hokage and slowly trickled down until Iruka relaxes and Kakashi is taken off ANBU.

Yeah, he did target ANBU and was successful at that, yeah some pranks landed him on T&I, yeah it reached the point he was a frequent visitor at T&I and him and Ibiki are begrudgingly close as a result, yeah there is a cell at T&I designated to Iruka, yeah T&I offices have a poster counting "[number] days without Umino Accidents", yeah whenever an ANBU acted out the Third Hokage would threat them with being assigned to "Umino Watch Duty", yeah he got one over infamous ANBU Hound, yeah he was threatened by Danzo, yeah ANBU automatically start following him if he is hanging out with Anko for the day because they don't want a repeat of the snakes incident, yeah some people hate him because in their words: he barely gets a slap on the wrist from the Hokage, yeah nobody wants to be near him when they see him with his seals equipment and books at hand.

I love every little headcanon about prankster Iruka, because he had the potential to do it I swear on my life, they just cut it out

However, this specific genjutsu-free period didn't last too long. At a time when Iruka was struggling badly with his grief, he asked Mizuki if he could cast a genjutsu where he could see his parents. He knew it would hurt, and it would make him feel worse than before but dammit, he missed them. Trying not to dwell on that, on the bright side it would count as training for both of them!

Two particular months when Iruka's pranks were hell on earth for the ANBU that had in-village patrols raised suspicion that something might be going on with him, but these two were sneaky enough to not be caught.

That was until Iruka not only wasn't breaking out of the genjutsu on his own, but Mizuki couldn't do it for him either, then he had to look for some close-by ANBU, the same from before, which appeared almost instantly when Mizuki started to panic. It was one with silver hair who was such a stuck-up but clearly a prodigy, and to their surprise, the ANBU couldn't break it either. Only when they got Kurenai in on the issue were they able to find the root of the problem, the reason they weren't able to dispel the genjutsu was that Iruka himself was strengthening it.

Mizuki got chewed up by Kurenai, who remarked that only because she specialized in genjutsu and had practice in T&I was she able to stop something like that, especially since Iruka seemed to almost perfect the basics of shinobi tactics for his subconscious to do this. Verbally bruising the younger teen's ego and the fleeting pride he felt at the chance of doing a jutsu this strong without meaning to.

When Iruka woke up in the hospital, both he and Mizuki got a tongue slash from Asuma (who was filled in by Kurenai), arguing that he told them to stop this training since the first incident and trying to not fuss over Iruka's mental well-being, then another tongue slash from the Third Hokage the same day. Ah, but Iruka was told to meet him for tea to discuss this further once he was in the right mind and discharged by the medi-nins. Iruka groaned.

Mizuki glared at the floor. Of course Iruka gets a tea meeting with the Hokage after also screwing up.

That day ended with Mizuki promising Iruka he wouldn't pull him under a genjutsu ever again, or at least nothing like that.
