The panic over COVID-19 causing people to hoard shit unnecessarily means I can't find medical supplies (like disinfecting alcohol wipes) without paying an obnoxiously exorbitant amount.
Generally healthy, able-bodied people don't need masks, exam gloves, or alcohol swabs to protect themselves against COVID-19. But chronically ill people and their caretakers do need those supplies to live their everyday lives.
Calm the fuck down and wash your fucking hands, ableds.
Able-bodied people and not-chronically-ill people are encouraged to reblog this, whether or not you're panicking over coronavirus.
puerto rico setting up a guillotine in front of the governers house... when will the rest of us put our money where ur mouth is like this?
anyways donate to puerto rico relief efforts
Mi gente. Despite natural disaster after natural disaster they refuse to back down. This all being just a few months since they stormed the Governors mansion and forced him to resign after he was caught mocking the deaths of people he saw as beneath him. After he shook hands with Trump and swore everything was just fine after the storm.
All of these officials being protested have hidden/stolen/deliberately mismanaged disaster funds, supplies and resources, all while our people are suffering and dying. BOTH after the hurricanes and after the earthquakes, they literally cannot stop themselves from stealing.
And dumbass congressmen on the continent think giving these evil people more money directly, instead of the populace itself, will solve these problems? Theyâve proven themselves incapable of restraint and exercising basic humanity, time and time again.
It should be noted that the last protests were only finally successful when they turned into a full blown general strike, which only lasted a fraction of the original protests due to itâs virtually immediate success. Because general strikes by a vast population are very successful at hitting these assholes where it actually hurts: their overfilled pockets.
The black version of the PR flag symbolizes the decolonial movement and, more recently and most unfortunately, the lost lives from the neglect after hurricanes Irma and Maria. This guillotine is not only triumphant to me itâs utterly beautiful. Itâs righteous vengeance encapsulated into such a pertinent and potent message.
I encourage anyone not familiar with this history in the making to go research it themselves, both in the news and on social media, and find organizations surrounding these protests to decide where you would like to donate most. Always give to the people as directly as you can, and not non profits or other shady places, if at all possible. There are also always funds on sites like gofundme from family members trying to send loved one supplies.
You can also reach out to the thousands of Puerto Ricans in and around your own communities who were forced off of the island after the hurricanes, often into unfamiliar places with vastly different and harsher climates.
Donât just admire us, put your money where your mouth is. Learn from our successes and understand the realities of the sacrifices made to enable these direct actions. Many have been beaten, tear gassed, arrested and disappeared for the cause, and itâs far from over. Have solidarity enough to learn more and learn from us instead of barking for sources in the comments. None of this is difficult to find, we just are rarely ever considered news worthy to mainstream white media.

DONâT LET THIS HAPPEN TO CEREAL!!!
Listen in the past the poor have had to improvise cheap food the rich never wanted as a means to survive. And over the many years of innovation made the food taste good until eventually the rich where like: âOh hay you actually like that garbage? Why on earth would you like it?â Then they try it, love it, start buying it, and then drive the price up so much it becomes a luxury good.
They do this and its devastating, the food typically never becomes affordable again. It donât matter how cheap the foo dis to produce, it doesnât matter if there is almost no meat on the bone or its super difficult to eat and messy. Once the poor discover how to make some bit of cheap food taste good, the rich take it away via driving the price of it up.
THEY DID THIS TO RIBS.
Ribs were garage meat. Just look at them, there is hardly any meat on the bone, you have to eat them by hand usually, and they are messy. They where an undesirable cheap source of junk meat. But the poor being the poor made them taste good. (Because they donât have much to choose from.) The rich discovered the meals the poor made with them and decided they liked ribs too. People discovered they could sell a few ribs to rich people and make way more money then selling lots of ribs to poor people and the price was driven up.
DONâT LET THIS HAPPEN TO CEREAL!!!
They did the same to brisket. You used to be able to get brisket for less than a dollar a pound, which meant you could get a twenty pound brisket fairly cheaply. And then you smoked it, sliced it, and had meat for weeks if not a full month. And it was tasty. I grew up eating brisket at least once a month because my family could afford it.
It was a cheap meat because no rich person looks at the dangly part of the neck of a cow and goes âooh, that looks tasty!â.
But then Food Network started showcasing things like barbecued brisket. Rich people started showing up at places that werenât just Rib Crib to get their barbeque. And the price of brisket went up. A lot.
I regularly see it for over five dollars a pound in stores now. And while yeah, that might not seem like a lot when youâre talking only a pound or two of meat, brisket is normally sold in ten to twenty pound sizes. Itâs become completely unaffordable to the people that made it delicious.
Sushi used to be really cheap, too, until it became âtrendyâ. Guess why youâre now paying twelve dollars for your order of California rolls? Because rich people discovered something that poor people had been eating for ages.
Noticed the prices of fajita meat, chicken thighs, or ham hocks has gone up recently? You guessed it. Rich people are taking our food and now weâre scrambling to afford the things that we grew up eating.
Lobster is a perfect example of this phenomenon. For hundreds of years, lobster was regarded as a sort of insect larvae from the depth of the sea. It had zero appeal as a âluxury foodâ until people living in NY and Boston developed a taste for it. Before the 19th century, it was considered a âpoverty foodâ or used as fertilizer and bait - some household servants specified in employment agreements that they would not eat lobster more than twice a week. It was also commonly served at prisons, which tells you something about prison food.
Only by cleverly marketing lobster as an indulgence for the privileged made it cost so much. It became a vehicle for enormous profit spawning a multi-billion dollar global industry in the process. This mythical affection for lobster flesh - not its practical value in terms of taste, nutrition, or any other reasonable consideration - drives its value.
LMAO. Wait.
Anyone elseâs eye twitchin?
Food gentrification is a long standing practice and itâs some of the most evil shit I can think of. Itâs why I refuse for example as someone living in the US to buy things with Quinoa in them. It is specifically pricing an indigenous population out of their prime staple food. Itâs a horrific invasion of one of the final requirements of staying alive.

My sociology professor had a really good metaphor for privilege today. She didnât talk about race or gender or orientation or class, she talked about being left-handed.
A left-handed person walks into most classrooms and immediately is made aware of their left-handedness - they have to sit in a left-handed seat, which restricts their choices of where to sit. If there are not enough left-handed seats, they will have to sit in a right-handed seat and be continuously aware of their left-handedness. (There are other examples like left-handed scissors or baseball mitts as well.)
Meanwhile, right-handed people have much more choice about where to sit, and almost never have to think about their right-handedness.
Does this mean right-handed people are bad? No.
Does it mean that we should replace all right-handed desks with left-handed desks? No.
But could we maybe use different desk styles that can accommodate everyone and makes it so nobody has limited options or constant awareness that they are different? Yes.
Now think of this as a metaphor. For social class. For race. For ethnicity. For gender. For orientation. For anything else that sets us apart.
WHY DOESNâT THIS HAVE MORE NOTES?
Because I posted it about 90 seconds ago, calm down.
if you lived your life never realizing until now some desks are in fact designed to be right handed then bonus revelation to how privilege works
Weâre also more likely to die in industrial accidents because all the machines have been built for right handers. Use that in your metephor as you will.
Iâm just dying while thinking about a hotel employee calmly Googling âHow to fold a towel in the shape of an elephant,â and then going out to buy eye stickers.
I think these would guarantee return bookings. Â Loving the elephant.
I worked in a hotel for a year. Hotel staff LOVE silly requests because otherwise our job is just mundane. It gives the front desk a chance to do something creative.
aaaa this is so lovely
Also, since this is Tumblr, Iâd like to take a chance to say that though this is very bad on the level of global politics, you are not in direct danger right now. This is not the end of the world, this is not the collapse of society, and this is not the start of WWIII. This is a seriously worrisome development, but panic is both unjustified and unhelpful, especially since this is going to affect the people of Iraq far, far, far more than it will affect you. Take a breath. Calm yourself. And then get mad at the people in Washington trying to lead us into an unneccesary war. And then get organized.
on september 11th 2001, two planes crashed into the world trade centre in new york city. It was a massacre. 3000 dead in a matter of 24 hours. the entire world was in shock of the atrocity, the brutal, diabolical murder of scores of innocents.Â
the american government reacted accordingly. a full investigation was launched to hold the culprits responsible â what nation could have sanctioned such a brutal attack on so many innocents? what kind of soulless country could, regardless of vendetta, allow such a heinous crime?Â
by 2002, the united states had their answer. the investigation was complete. A 600 page document known as the Congressional Report on 9/11 was released. approx 20 pages detailing the workings of the nation responsible were produced. The report was published.Â
Except the name of the country responsible for 9/11 was redacted in the report. blackened out with a sharpie. It would remain redacted for 14 years. The country in question? Saudi Arabia.Â
Instead of declaring to the world who was involved in orchestrating 9/11, the u.s. would hide this information for over a decade.Â
Instead, they would point fingers at Iraq, whilst knowing that iraq had nothing to do with the attack in the first place. They would orchestrate journalistic propaganda in the new york times about âweapons of mass destructionâ â a narrative that had been proven false by their very own intelligence officers, a narrative that had been shot down by every journalist that had ever stepped foot in Niger (where the purported ingredients of mass destruction were coming from). Regardless, the New York Times would dutifully publish the perverted stories anyway. NYT editors would say âto not invade iraq is the bigger mistakeâ.Â
In 2003, the months of building up false stories in the media, propaganda in every mainstream newspaper, journal and t.v. show would pay off. The u.s. would invade iraq.Â
from 2003 -Â 2011 the country of iraq would be brutalized in ways never seen before by mankind. modern, 21st century warfare would decimate the very spirit of iraq. at least 460 000 innocent, iraqi civilians murdered in 8 years. entire generations were wiped out in less than a decade. we will never know their names.Â
waves of sexual violence committed upon âcapturedâ cities ensued at the hands of american soldiers. many of the survivors, if not dead at the hands of their occupiers, would take their own lives. we will never know their names.Â
in 2011, the blood in iraq is finally dry. weâve leeched all of it. weâve procured the natural resources we came for â itâs time to head out. the so called WMD we came for were never found, they did not exist, they were never real to begin with. A far cry from how things got started, we start seeing articles about the falsehood of the iraq war. the same publishers who willingly handed out propaganda to the masses about WMD in Saddamâs hands are now saying âwaitâŠweâve made an error.â the narrative shifts. the occupation ends 3 years after a new commander in chief is granted the power to end it. in its wake we leave behind military bases and mercenaries that are ready to activate whenever called upon.Â
That same year, the u.s. supports various popular movements across the arab world. tens of regimes are flipped.Â
and in that same year, using the same weapons left behind by valiant american rapists and invaders, an army of another kind of mercenaries is born. they call themselves ISIL, then ISIS.Â
ISIS vows to cleanse the muslim world of shia muslims, minority sect muslims, christians, yezidis, Jewish people. ISIS also vows they are enemies of the u.s. America vows vice versa. Their feud is a celebrated one. ISIS, the evil nemesis of the Brave & Courageous America.Â
But then, 2012 happens. America, losing their influence and control over the levant, start funding ISIS factions. America starts funding Al-Qaeda factions.Â
The same NYT that once convinced us that Iraq had WMD is now INSISTING that these al-qaeda factions, that themselves claim to be brothers of al-qaeda, are moderate rebels simply looking for democracy and liberation. people believe it.Â
Americaâs proxies in the levant go on to destroy the region in unimaginable waysâand then, 2018 happens.Â
Iraqis & Iranians destroy ISIS. Indisputably, action from both nations led to the destruction of ISIS, now a paid member of the U.S. military. America, once using ISIS and AQ factions to regain control over the levant struggles to position themselves as the heroes â attempting pathetically to play both sides of the same coin. Again, the same way outlets like NYT backtracked their Iraq war propaganda, they start apologizing for identical mistakes in naming actual american funded terrorists as âfreedom fighters.â another cycle ends.Â
ISIS is gone, but the real loss is Americaâs. Theyâve lost the barbaric feudalistic control they once held in the region via ISIS and Al-Qaeda. Their terrorist assets have been reduced to ashes by a people they once themselves invaded from 2003 - 2011.
This brings us to today. The united states has assassinated Qassem Soleimani, Iranâs second in command. this is akin to another nation murdering the likes of mike pence, joe biden or dick cheney. it is an act of war. 4000 troops have been deployed to the Iraq-Iran region. It is an invasion.Â
And just as in 2003 the NYT & MSM justified the faulty invasion of iraq, and just as in 2012 the NYT & MSM justified the funding of ISIS & AQ factions, in 2020, a new propaganda will circulate to justify the illegal assassination of sovereign leaders.Â
New propaganda will circulate to justify a new era of bloodshed in Iraq & Iran and the rape and murder of innocents. New propaganda will vilify young, brown children as terrorists. New propaganda will circulate to return us to the year 2003.Â
There is nothing I can do within my capacity to help anyone. I am completely useless in saving any of the lives that will be taken in the next several years.Â
All I can do is ask that when you see a piece of information that attempts to justify the actions of the u.s. on foreign soil, in any foreign nation, that you reduce it to ashes. They lied to you in 2003, they did it again in 2011, they are doing it again in 2020.Â
Reject the lie. Itâs all we can do.Â
RODRIGO NO
So Iâm currently enslaved employed by a cable company, and I can offer a few pointers:
Find a copy of the customer agreement online. Read it. Have the âbig cats in boxesâ YouTube video on standby so that you can renew your will to live periodically while reading it.
Focus on the sections about cancellation
Examine any terms regarding early termination fees, notice required, proration of the time between cancellation and the end of the billing period, and equipment return policies.
Send a letter requesting cancellation to your carrier via certified mail. Include the date you wish for it to be cancelled. If you are not the account holder but have power of attorney, or the account holder has died and you are managing their estate, send copies of the relevant documentation with the letter.Â
The day after, when it isnât cancelled, call back. Ask for âretentionâ or âloyaltyâ and when asked why, state that you wish to cancel.Â
Theyâll ask you why you want to cancel. Say âI donât want to discuss it, I just want to cancel my service.â (note: there are times when it pays to disclose your reasons; my company will waive all early termination fees and penalties if the account holder is being entering military deployment or a nursing home. Check their policies.)
Theyâll offer something nice. Bundles, discounts, free channels, etc. Say âas nice as that sounds, and as much as I appreciate the offer, I just need to cancel my service.â
When they deflect again, ask how to return any leased equipment. Theyâll launch into another spiel about that, thankful that you arenât making them process the cancellation. Write down the process â theyâll either tell you to bring the equipment to a local office, or theyâll state that they are sending recovery kits. If itâs the latter, ask for the address that the recovery kits return to and write it down (you want to use the recovery kit if you get one, since itâs prepaid, but if they arenât sent youâll want to be able to return the equipment yourself.)Â
After all of this has transpired, state âAs I stated in the letter sent via certified mail on [date], I am ending our contractual relationship and terminating this subscription. Has my cancellation order been processed?â
If the cancellation order has not been processed, tell them to process it. Listen to their spiel. Ask for the date that it will be terminated.
Hang up, wait thirty minutes. Call back, ask if your account is pending cancellation or not. If not, ask to be transferred to retention and ask for a supervisor. Demand that your cancellation be processed and advise them that a complaint will be filed with the FCC if it is not.Â
If more than an hour has been spent on the phone, file a complaint at FCC.gov. Forcing a customer to continue a service outside of the terms stipulated by the contract is illegal and the FCC hates it.Â
This went from really funny to âholy fuck what kind of nightmare dystopia do we live in that we need to be educated on how to get a company to actually cancel an account with a company that bills you monthlyâ really fast.

What the FUCK is going on with platforms closing major fandom archives with almost no fucking notice this month, jesus fucking christ, first Y! groups now 8 Tracks.
Well, if you have any fucking 8 Tracks playlists, youâd better download them as soon as possible, because you have FOUR FUCKING DAYS before theyâre deleted.
The automatic spotify exporter, btw, works like absolute dogshit if youâre trying for any playlists that have filk, fan covers, niche remixes, classical music, or anything spotify doesnât own licenses on.
And hey, 8 Hacks can only download the first 5 songs in playlists before it freezes out and gives up so fucking good luck I guess
Donât buy into this fucking sob story theyâre giving about how their âhands are tiedâ by the woes of extreme debt.
They raised 2 million dollars in donations for their staffâs unfulfilled backpay and then couldnât be bothered to funnel it into paying the employees that they had not paid in months, and now the cowardly little fuckers are shutting their entire website with 5 days notice (they announced this yesterday), as if it somehow comes as a surprise to them too.
At least Y! groups had the common decency to give us a couple of fucking weeks.
8tracks shot itself in the foot by making change after change to punish their own user base, only reverting to sensible monetization systems years too late, and then blaming fucking spotify, as if itâs spotifyâs fault that it offers a free-with-ads introductory service while 8tracks decided to waffle between half a dozen different equally incompetent monetization schemes ranging from âno free listening at allâ to âonly free listening, but not more than 6 hours a weekâ to âbuy some of our $33 million worth of investor shares and then you can listen to whatever you wantâ to who fuckign even knows what else.
They did this to themselves.
And then they were too cowardly to offer their user baseâboth historic AND currentâthe opportunity to save our collections of music, some of which is ltierally impossible to source anywhere else because the fan artists who made it have disappeared entirely. By offering 5 days notice, an export tool that doesnât work, and no download tools.
This is the most shameful, cowardly bullshit Iâve seen in a long fucking time. To say nothing of the fact that while they announced it on their social media and blog pages, they decided to wait a full day or more to actual email account holders directly (for example, my own email only arrived at 5:30PM this evening).
They gave us 120 hours, and then suctioned off another 20 or 30 just because they couldnât copy paste their blog into an email blast.
Anyway, good luck getting your shit off 8tracks before 11:59:59 PM (23:59:59) on December 31st, because youâll need it. We all fucking will.
Reblogging for folks who might have stuff out there. I know nothing about this, otherwise.
Not sure what any of this is but just incase. yikes.
Fandom: God thereâs like NO content anymore. I wish we could get more art and fanfics :(((
Someone: Hey, I canât draw anything digitally, because I canât afford a tablet, but hereâs a pen on paper drawing that I spent a lot of time and hard work on. Also, I took a shot at my first fanfic and Iâd really like some feedback or at least some kudos if you enjoyed it :)
Fandom: Oh... yeah sorry no... not you. We actually meant writers that are already well known and popular to produce MORE content... I mean, if a popular blog shares your work then maybe. And we donât really like pen to paper art. We just donât think itâs professional or even looks good :/
This is why I try to reblog things that have little notes - the fandom NEEDS new people, or it dies, but the OLD people are there to support the new creators! New creators will leave and forget if the fandom doesn't welcome them, because they feel left out. We should remember that all great artists and writers, even the famous ones in big name fandoms, they all started from nothing.
If you don't want a fandom to die feed the sparks that come anew, don't blow on the old burnt ashes hoping they'll start again.
ââFeed the sparks that come anew, donât blow on the old burnt ashes hoping theyâll start again.â
Maybe heâs ordering a decaf because he has a heart condition, and youâre about to give him a heart attack and send him to the hospital.
Or maybe heâs just ordering a decaf.
Maybe sheâs ordering sugar free because sheâs diabetic, and youâre about to put her six feet under.
Or maybe sheâs just ordering sugar free,
Maybe theyâre ordering non-dairy because theyâre intolerant, and youâre about to ruin their day. Maybe theyâre allergic, and youâre about to sponsor an all black event in an open field.
Or maybe theyâre just ordering non-dairy.
Maybe they ordered gluten free because they canât process it, and youâre about to destroy their digestive tract.
Or maybe theyâre just ordering gluten free.
Maybe theyâre ordering this way just because they donât want the food, for whatever reason.
But are you willing to bet their life on it?
#also in the reverse#they might need the caffeine for a headache#they might be allergic to soy or almonds and need real dairy#they might have low blood sugar and need the boost#there are no safe assumptions when it comes to what people eat#even if it will just make them a little sick youâre still making them sick#just give people what they ask for
It is illegal to intentionally give someone a different thing than the food or drink item they have paid for, even down to the brand, which is why when you order âa cokeâ the waitress will ask âis pepsi okay?â
Itâs not just a dick move, itâs a crime. If you work somewhere with an alcohol licence the licence holder can lose their licence if you do this. It is taken VERY seriously. Do not fuck around with peopleâs food and drink orders. Ever.
vegans who refuse to even eat backyard eggsâŠ.why
people who think its unethical to eat chicken eggs are like people who think bees should keep all their honey. they literally produce more than they need and your unwillingness to even buy local means you are doing nothing to help them, support your small farmers you heathens
This is not true.
1) honeybees do not produce âextra honey.â And beekeepers donât take some of the honey, they take all of it.
2) chickens have been artificially selected from naturally producing eggs once a month to producing eggs every couple of days. Their bodies are not sustainable and the health complications of this rapid egg production kills chickens.
Hey idk who like. Lied to you about the way honey farms work, but could you stop spreading misinformation? Are you a beekeeper?
Because I am!
Beekeepers make sure hives are fed before there is pollen in the air, protected from predators and the elements, and have enough honey to sustain themselves. We donât take all of it.
But overproduction of honey leads to stagnation in the hive. It puts stress on the queen to lay eggs, and when they inevitably fill up all their space with honey (instead of filling up the multiple empty, clean boxes of frames beekeepers might put on top of the main hive box), the queen can get so stressed she dies. If thereâs a spike in the weather and the hive hasnât prepared new queen brood, thatâs it! The colony is dead. Because there wasnât enough space for eggs and honey in the hive.
Beekeepers take excess honey. We are constantly monitoring the state of the hive, checking for parasites, analyzing the eggs for diseases, and making sure they are fed and healthy (usually with sugar water and pollen substitutes until they have made enough honey to sustain themselves in the early spring months). If a queen dies prematurely, we make every attempt to replace her to save the colony.
I know thereâs an urge to patronize everyone who works in the farming industry, but try to understand the differences between small scale agriculture and industrial farming. There IS a difference. And stop spreading misinformation.
If youâre this passionate about ethical consumption, look into some of the ecofeminist research on non-hierarchal interspecies relationships (working on building animal-human relationships in a non exploitative way).
But yeah! Stop spreading misinformation! Please đ
Also if I can harp on the chicken part?
Yea Chickens are some of the most abused animals on big factory farms and Iâll be the first to admit itâs criminal and more needs to be done to regulate this.
Yes selective breeding over time has caused an increase in the ammount of eggs produced by chickens and factory farms have some messed up practices to get more eggs from them including forced moutling.
THIS IS WHY YOU SUPPORT LOCAL FARMERS AND THEIR EGGS
Many people take to raising their own hens because of Americaâs immoral treatment of hens in factory farms like youâre not helping the poor chicks by starving these farmers financially youâre just hurting the one people trying to change things and making the OPTION of cage free organic cruelty free eggs even harder to find
Yeah, as someone who like⊠lives on a chicken and duck farm⊠Coops help keep wild animals out but birds are kinda dumb. And chickens literally do not need to keep the unfertilized eggs!Â
Most chickens will sit on unfertilized eggs until they can tell if they are or not⊠By the smell of rotting egg. Yeah, ew. Farmers can hold that bitch to the flashlight and tell if thereâs a baby in there! They know! The eggs are not being abused!
Also, if you separate your cocks and your hens, there wont even be that issue in the first place. Egg-laying is basically chicken menstruation, but unlike mammalian menstruation which is full of blood and dead tissue, chicken menstruation is full of tasty tasty nutrients
Support local farms! Most grocery stores carry eggs from small, local farms that give hens acres of open pasture and healthier housing.
Lots of things get me heated and people who spread misinformation in the name of trying to be ecofriendly/sustainable/ethical in consumption. Like eating meat/animal products/animal by products is not the issue.
The issue is how that shit is produced.
The western food industrial complex is the enemy. Consummerism spurred by western expansion, industrialization, and colonialism why we are seeing so much pushback. But local and small busineses/farms can be a solution as well as taking a wider look at what/how we are consuming.
Fruits/veggies are being sold out of season year round could be replaced with more seasonal and more local produce because tbh out of season shit doesn't taste as good and is double the price. And its not as sustainable to be growing out of season stuff???
I'm a huge advocate to going back to cultural and indigenous food practices since in most cultures around the world people cook and eat from the land that surrounds them. My family grows half the shit we need (mostly because major groceries stores don't have the stuff we need because 1. We're Asian 2. Apparently cultural asian stuff boils down to sauces and pocky).
ALSO how about we go back to using the whole animal instead of throwing away shit. Like hot damn do you know how tasty some of those parts that the West consider gross are????
Atena Farghadani is a 28-year-old Iranian artist. She was recently sentenced to 12 years and 9 months in prison for drawing a cartoon.
This cartoon, that she posted on her Facebook page last year, depicts members of the Iranian parliament as animals. It was drawn in protest of new legislature in Iran that will restrict access to contraception and criminalise voluntary sterilisation. Atenaâs charges include âspreading propaganda against the systemâ and âinsulting members of parliament through paintingsâ.
Last August, 12 members of the elite Revolutionary Guard came to Atenaâs house, blindfolded her and took her to the infamous Evin Prison in Tehran. According to Amnesty International:
âWhile in prison last year, Atena flattened paper cups to use them as a surface to paint on. When the prison guards realised what she had been doing, they confiscated her paintings and stopped giving her paper cups. When Atena found some cups in the bathroom, she smuggled them into her cell. Soon after, she was beaten by prison guards, when she refused to strip naked for a full body search. Atena says that they knew about her taking the cups because they had installed cameras in the toilet and bathroom facilities â cameras detainees had been told were not operating.â
She was released in November and gave media interviews and posted a video on YouTube detailing her beatings, constant interrogations and humiliating body searches. She was then rearrested possibly in retaliation for speaking out and has been imprisoned ever since. In January, Atena went on a hunger strike to protest the horrible prison conditions. Her health suffered dramatically, and after losing consciousness and suffering a heart attack in February, she was forced to eat again.
The quote used in the comic is taken from the speech Atena gave at her trial. It has been translated into English by the Free Atena Facebook page. You can read the whole thing here.
Time is now against her, she has just two weeks to lodge an appeal. Michael Cavna, comic journalist for The Washington Post, has launched a campaign appealing to artists to help bring awareness to Atenaâs case by creating their own artwork in support of Atena and using the hashtag#Draw4Atena.
