Beware the Ides of March!
How thoroughly do you sketch the outlines of your image before you begin to paint?
I thought it'd be fun to post some side-by-sides so you can see! A lot of my paintings on here start of as drawings, so they are often pretty thought out. Generally I tend to wing it a little bit more if I have a good visual for the image in my head and it's a small simple piece. I have enough confidence these days that I mostly trust myself to not ruin a painting if I don't have every little detail planned out. Certainly with larger paintings I find that if I've already solved everything in the sketch, I get pretty bored having to spend so much time painting it- it's like leaving yourself with nothing but a big colouring book. No fun at all!!

“Zooarium, which is like a regular zoo but everything is in tanks because the zoo is for merpeople” is a concept I had not previously contemplated but I am absolutely delighted by it now.
I think that would be called a terrarium.
“Zoo” is derived from Greek “zōion,” which just means “animal”. That’s why you see it in all sorts of animal-related contexts; zoology, zooplankton, zoomorphism, zoophyte, and so on. If merpeople spoke European languages, they would probably use the word “zoo” to refer to a park where marine animals were kept.
The word “terrarium” is a recent* play on “aquarium,” substituting aqua- for terra- because it’s a case (usually glass) meant to hold terrestrial organisms. But that’s exactly what the merfolk are doing here. They’re constructing specialized enclosures for holding terrestrial organisms. That’s a terrarium.
But yeah, mermaid terrariums are a cool idea.
*Late 19th century. Note that “aquarium” apparently dates back only to the mid-19th century, and that it’s a play on the now-obsolete word “vivarium”. In Latin it was a word for warrens or fish ponds, but in the 17th century English-speakers used it to refer to a place you put living animals. I did my homework.
the slow casual creep of misogyny back into every point of our lives both digital and physical is making me feel fucking insane

the thing is is that you'll be like. 11 years old and someone will tell you that you have to shave your legs. either it will be your mum or a friend or a mean girl in the p.e. changing rooms telling you how gross it is that you have hair on your legs. so then you ask your mum about it and she says yep you have to take this razor blade and drag it across your skin under running water and just hope you don't cut yourself too badly and you have to do this every single week and maybe more frequently than that and you have to do that for fucking ever. the rest of your fucking life. because the hair that grows naturally on your legs is gross and ugly and people will laugh and boys won't like you! of course boys have hair on THEIR legs. but that's normal and even attractive and it's just not the same for you. and a few years later they'll say well you obviously should also be shaving your armpits. and then it's your arms and then it's that you have to wax your upper lip and pluck your eyebrows and ewww why do you have hair on your fingers and your toes.. you need to shave that too. and then suddenly you need to buy spray that will make invisible hairs on your face visible so that you can shave that too! and it's expensive and time consuming and difficult and it HURTS but they just say beauty is pain babe! and you're not allowed to say that maybe if beauty is pain then you don't actually want to be beautiful

Human relationships are not transactional but they are reciprocal, which I think many of you with your ‘i don’t owe anyone anything’ shtick are too happy to forget
Transactional: everything has to be exactly 50/50 all the time, pay me back for the £5 sandwich or buy me something worth exactly £5, I refuse to make an effort for you if there’s nothing in it for me
Reciprocal: you were there for me when I needed help, and I’m going to do the same for you, it doesn’t matter if one of us needs more or is capable of less, because the point is not equivalent exchange but mutual care
I bring you gladsome tidings of a woman who needle-felts creatures from the Luttrell Psalter.
That is all.

learning to notice an absence of people of color is crazy. you start seeing it everywhere. ill see a random pic of characters or people or whatever and be like "these are all white people. why"
all the babies in those baby youtube video memes. humanized character posts. like. its the little innocent shit. and like, the people making those baby memes probably arent seeking out white babies. maybe theyre just easier to find. but why are they easier to find? a complicated question, surely... but you know what it probably comes down to. someone, somewhere, maybe a lot of someones in a lot of places, made a choice. maybe knowingly, maybe not. but they made a choice. it starts to make you feel like a conspiracy theorist!!

I’m not Christian, I don’t go to church anymore, and my pastor died, but when he was alive I’d sometimes go to his sermons and I remember one time he said “it feels good to hate, but we know that it isn’t allowed, so when we’re told that we’re allowed to hate someone we get so excited that we forget we’re supposed to love”, and if my humble atheist ass might borrow some church talk I’d like to perhaps submit that
Anyhow sometimes on the day to day I feel disgust or revulsion and I have to ask myself “is this a danger to anyone at all or am I just looking for something I’m allowed to hate” and a solid 98/100 times it’s the latter so once again thank you pastor D
science has always been political. what gets studied. what doesnt. who gets to do the studying. on and on and on.
