Iβve seen many different takes on noelle saying dess βleftβ (plus how that parallels her in the normal route saying she wanted to leave). It could be just an euphemism for her going missing or dying, it could be that noelle is in denial, it could be that dess really did βleaveβ of her own accord, whatever that means, and maybe noelle knows more about what happened than we think. Iβve just been thinking a lot about that choice of words, how did you interpret it?
my immediate interpretation was that noelle is in Big Denial. we've already seen plenty of how much she retreats into her own reality in the face of horrible things happening, so her constructing her own narrative about dess's disappearance fits perfectly in line with that. i read "after dess left" and was like oh noelle. oh honey.
i think it's almost certain that whatever the circumstances, noelle is in some level of denial about her sister. i can see there being other factors than just noelle making shit up to cope, such as the adults possibly giving her an untrue, "softer" story, or that being the story the town was fed (even if most dont really believe it). i think she knows in her heart it's not true, though. the pause before she says "...left" tells me that. i dont think it's possible that whatever happened couldve been kept from noelle completely, especially considering that kris was most likely directly involved too. and, given how asgore talks about it, i dont think it's possible that whatever happened was quiet or vague enough to give the impression that dess left by her own will. asgore knows that somebody else is to blame. and it was bad enough that he wants to kill them and parade their corpse around town for what they did to dess.
