with all the deltarune analyses out there i think there should be more videos analyzing the sound effects of the game. because i feel they're some of the most iconic and impactful bits of sound design ever in a video game. it feels less like random sounds thrown about and more like... an effectively spoken language, with the perfect amount of words to speak the most vivid description of something. it's not just the songs and their various leitmotifs that form connections and associations, but even the sounds pull such strong ties to things in your mind when you hear them, whether they're funny gags or spine-chilling echoes, they ALL mean something. it's not just the weird route jingle or whatever, hell even the basic battle sound effects have that... effect. man i could go on
there's a pretty good reason why there's so many "memes with deltarune sfx" videos out there

wasn't a wc fan all that much but long ago when i read the first warriors series during my teen years i remembered really really really not liking scourge
it wasn't even like "oh i hate this character" cuz that was not entirely it... it was more like i hated how this character was implemented into the very story. because there's a lot of potential with what was essentially a violent organized crime group of cats outside the bounds of the other "heroic" cats. i think bloodclan would absolutely fuck hard if done by the right kind of writer. but unfortunately they only showed up in the very last book. with zero buildup. only thing i can think of from a past book that really "foreshadows"/ties back to them is the reason why the cat boulder doesn't even follow the typical warriors naming scheme, but that's probably it.
so having a main villain, tigerstar, who's been built up as this massive threat throughout every single book, suddenly be killed off by this new guy he worked with at the very final battle... actually has a shitton of potential for being like, genius and unique storytelling. unfortunately bloodclan was not built up as an ever-increasing threat in the previous books, you probably don't fear it as much as the more elaborated-on tigerstar, so what could've been the most shocking moment in feline literature... felt somewhat "hollow" and pretty unearned to me. yes tiger's death was horrifyingly iconic, yes scourge's design and aesthetic were also iconic, but does it all really matter that much when you don't have a stable foundation for any of that?
so my feelings towards scourge are less "hate" and more... frustration and disappointment towards what could've been a REALLY interesting villain. eugh
so how would i fix scourge and by extension bloodclan... well it's been literal years since i've read the books and don't feel like touching them again but i've always had this idea lingering in the back of my mind after reading them so whatever
have bloodclan show up by the very first book, not as a whole dangerous group but... as a tiny group of stray cat bullies who pick on rusty/fireheart in the beginning. they aren't AS dangerous as what they'll become later, but it's enough to perhaps nudge him a little out of the neighborhood and into the clans, if the whole spaying and neutering thing wasn't enough of a motivator. later on, every time fire has to cross between the forest to the neighborhood there's always those fuckass cats looking for a bone to pick, sometimes he ends up in fights with them before getting to where he needs to go, and they kinda start to remind him of a clan, a more tinier, disorganized and cruel clan. at this point they are no way near the level of danger other antagonists from within the clans possess, they're more like... team rocket thugs, i guess.
but as the books go on, you can see them start to develop and organize into a stronger group. fire and the others encounter more and more of them each book, they gradually grow from simple thugs to something more sinister and dangerous, they start developing their signature insignias like the dog tooth collars and claws and even their name "bloodclan" as a distortion of the actual clans they fought against, and they slowly gain more power over the entire neighborhood...
and at the center of it all is scourge. in the first book he could be this wimpy cat who is still REALLY nasty to rusty, and for a long time that's all you'll see him as, a basic bully character among other meaningless bully characters. but as the group grows larger, you get to see more of his cunning side, his penchant for violence, these true colors showing after being in a social environment where he's no longer a small fish to pick on...
maybe he could be a dark mirror of firestar, a simple housecat who started from nothing, but ended up becoming the most powerful and well-respected cat among their very community, but while firestar did so with a noble and heroic heart and a desire to protect his fellow clanmates, scourge did so through using various schemes and manipulation tactics and acts of violence against his own kin to climb further and further up the social ladder, even using fellow scorned clan cats from outside to claim further power....
and so by the very end, it's not really a battle between our hero and a literal rando who showed up last second to sic on his own accomplice. it's a battle between a cat who lead others through selfless desire and a cat who ruled eveyone through selfish gain. an ultimate final duel between two underdog cats, perhaps even from the same litter, who started from nothing but ended up earning everything. and so they use all they've learned from their ascension to rulers to fight each other one last time. it would be even more poetic y'know

mildly hot take but this character design kinda sucks ass
knowing that she's a girl living in the "recycling bin" of a virtual computer world, i had the assumption that she was perhaps an unfinished thrown-away 3d model given sentience, if the suspiciously default-grid-textured torso was anything to go by. but that interesting bit of visual storytelling feels really "quiet" when trying to compete against her loud and instantly attention-grabbing hot-pink hair with big ass ahoge and... dangly star antennae... that barely tie to any of that possible visual storytelling i just mentioned beforehand. it makes her lose that feeling of "unfinishedness" i also bought up. maybe these extraneous things might've been parts of that unfinished model's full design, but that's just guesswork on what the hell all this is trying to convey. it feels entirely tacked on, like something the artist decided on a whim going "aw this is so cute i love drawing this 500 times" instead of taking the time to consider what design feature makes the most sense on her narratively and symbolically. and i mean i get it sometimes i DO add cute or fun-to-draw features to characters on a whim but the role of the character is still constantly on the back of my mind so it still kinda evens out i guess. it's fine for a beginner's oc, but this is a whole ass several-thousand-dollar indie game and a stronger protagonist design can immediately communicate what the whole game's deal is about much quicker and enhance the storytelling and all that. also the ahoge keeps competing with the star things for "dangly thing on top of character's head" real estate and it's really distracting. and why stars specifically? i mean she's got a telescope and glowing star tapestries in her house, so is astronomy really that important to her lore? that should've been potrayed a bit better than just those star dinkles
this feels like a very strong case study for a character design that doesn't even know what it wants to be... maybe that might be fitting for the character? but certainly not to her possible context.
oh and side note who else found it extremely weird that the very end of the game's reveal trailer just showed off all this vograce-ass merch hovering around enticingly. what kind of normal indie game even shows off all this tacky-ass fanzine-type merch in the trailer right after the game is fucking announced
the anti-capitalist in me looks at this in dread.

I think she’s kind of cute
i want to see what the character being made fun of looks like
ok this is the character being laughed at in question. her name is Pipca and apparently her artist was being mocked by another artist just because Fat. this lead to the creation of the image that fuelled further mockery towards the character (and then other characters). very unfortunate situation. that's the short of it i don't feel like elaborating more
excuse the fact that looking for good images of her was kinda tough rip
okay so i gave the crackship baby (her name is hazel btw) maybe the funniest possible nicknames for her parents
inside-canon outside-of-tomodachi-wise, fern as a parent would probably give out energy of "went off to get the milk and never returned until several weeks later somehow", like maybe sorta negligent to her kid but not because she doesn't care about the damn kid (obviously not, that's HER kid), but only because she's always up to some weird extraneous bullshit outside the family life. goes through 100 different sidequests and comes back home with several knife wounds a potentially stolen weapon and most important of all — groceries. she would not give a shit that her kid calls her "the other mom" and considers her more of a "fun aunt" than an actual "mom" due to her frequent absences, it makes for fun bedtime stories at least. also this would be the reason why her wife would always bring along a friend to the house as a babysitter because like fern WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK ARE YOU DOING PLEASE TEND TO YOUR KID ONE PARENT ISN'T ENOUGH
also wait... hazel... baby hazel......
...oh god......

why was it only today when i found out russia made a whole ass movie about that nonchalant elephant seal blob dude you've probably seen memes of a dozen times
i wonder why the hell deltarune is so prevalent in people's dreams compared to other games. most of my videogame related dreams (besides the pokemon ones) had some deltarune stuff in them whether i was playing a new chapter or whatever. and whenever people talk about video game dreams a lot of people will always bring up their weird deltarune dreams. some of the top results in r/thomastheplankengine are in fact also deltarune dreams. is it perhaps the hype of new chapters and the endless possibilities they may bring that's invading our deep subconscious dreamscapes???
well i mean deltarune itself came from a dream so. pretty poetic
