another tadc-related rant but here's a thing about integrating specific aesthetics into a work. i think it could be a really great tool for helping push the already-present themes of a story even further through deep and possibly historical visual associations. unfortunately the digital circus doesn't really do that all that well
it has a VERY strong "children's funhouse" aesthetic for a first impression, with influences from I Spy and children's computer games and toys from general, but what does it try to say with these inspirations? does it do anything thematically with the fact that these literal adults are now stuck in a highly sanitized child's world? and lorewise why does it look like a kids game??? you don't get answers for any of that. the kiddy stuff meant nothing, it was simply just aesthetics for the sake of aesthetics. why make it just Toys when you've got nothing to say about it
not to toot my own horn or anything but i too also have a project dear to me with heavy sci-fi elements and a lot of specific 2000's aesthetics, only this time it's y2k stuff (like frutiger aero, vectorheart, etc). but i wanted to do this not just cuz the vibes were cool but because these aesthetics had some heavy ties with humanity's connection/evolution through technology and (supposedly) optimistic futures, which worked well for a story set on a technogical utopian paradise island entirely populated by sentient robots made to replace humanity, and whatever important themes i wanted to put into that story.
it's not entirely "cozy solarpunk" though, without getting into spoilers this story's meant to go some really dark places, and i can tie that back to the other side of the coin with these y2k aesthetics: their intended purpose to advertise products and possibly subtly manipulate customers into thinking these companies are "safe" and welcoming, which works well with whatever deeper themes of capitalistic decay i wish to add. the fact that these were aesthetics with corporate ties and intent that are now ironically associated with the joys of early technology and a brighter future outside of capitalism is... surprisingly kinda resonant with the philosophical and technological conflicts going on in that little robot story of mine.
like i don't think it's the deepest thing in the world, but it's MILES less shallow than Toys for the sake of Toys. i recognize cultural and political associations with certain aesthetics and try to tie them back into my own work. gooseworx didn't. there is so much you can do with Toys. there is a purpose in Toys. if only you have more thought put into this show you could discover the secret of Toys
wait lemme figure out how to integrate the Toys aesthetic into wider themes.
so we know the purpose of toys. to make children have fun. but the cast of the show are all adults, so that kinda conflicts a bit of that.
now let's look at Toys through a wider lens. many toys after a long while of rough play will eventually have to be "discarded". maybe this reflects the cast in some way, they went through life beaten and chewed up and spat out like they're toys being roughhoused by a baby, except the baby was Capitalism, or whatever other looming societal problems drove the cast into having miserable lives. maybe this could reflect the circus itself, a huge project of many people that became abandoned for whatever reason, just like another toy that got "broken", sitting in the basement like any other toy, waiting for someone to play with it again. maybe the digital clones were also like toys, the humans finding these headsets then putting them away after "playing" with them, unintentionally "discarding" entire conscious virtual clones of themselves into the system in the process. maybe it's all toys because caine is like a child, a child of the many researchers and programmers who programmed and trained him, now left all alone and completely neglected in his room, only with Toys to keep him happy. all thrown out like any other toy.
there is also more obvious ideas of adult characters being trapped in a children's world, where they're treated like children with childish ideas and restrictions instead of the adult freedoms they desire, like swearing sex and having a long fulfilling adult life with many friends and experiences. only now with this new Toy framework i've cooked up all of this could be enhanced even more. maybe the circus people are treated like children because caine is somewhat mentally and emotionally like a child, despite having the wider intellectual capabilities of an adult.
maybe the important takeaway here is, even if society throws away all your hopes, dreams, whatever gave you joy long ago, it's important to find that thing again. find that lost happiness. find that toy at the bottom of your basement bin. because "play" is still an important nutrient for the human soul. everyone deserves happiness. idk how this would fully tie into any messages or themes with the circus, perhaps it's because all the characters were discarded from humanity either willingly or unwillingly, they decide to try and forge their own path of happiness where no one else will ever be thrown to the wayside to rot, even if the digital world tries to stay "stagnant" it doesn't have to be, bringing meaning into it puts it back into momentum. okay this is kinda worded weirdly and maybe not fulling expressing whatever complex thoughts i'm having right now but whateverrrrr

Hoopa is a relic of an age long dead, engineered by SILPH for a specific purpose forgotten (buried) long ago but it still performs with consistency. Hoopa represents the peak of SILPH's ghost experimentation that, ultimately, cost them more than they'd ever admit, with the Pokemon's loss heralding a slow decline that would close out a history of retroactive embarrassment. The Pokemon was believed to have died in a catastrophic failure of one of its rings generations ago, but has recently been proven to still be alive and active. This news has sent shockwaves through the conglomerate, who has begun to act desperately in attempts to remove the colossal apparition from the wild for the sake of public safety.
Hoopa is a giant of constantly regenerating prenatal flesh and crystalised dimensional slag. It possesses a unique power that permits it to transport objects of any number and size distances of any length in the blink of an eye. Like all ghost-types, it resides on multiple dimensions at once, with only a portion of it existing upon the third dimension - the dimension observable by human beings. The portion (extrusion) that rests upon the third dimension, a mere fraction of the Pokemon's size and power, is known as "Hoopa Obscured". The full body of Hoopa that resides within the Crossway, the mire between dimensions within which all ghosts walk, is known as "Hoopa Revealed". Hoopa Obscured is a mere foot and a half tall in the third dimension, while Hoopa Revealed exceeds 21 feet.
This Pokemon is known for its kleptomaniacal behaviour. It will steal things that attract its attention, but what actually attracts its attention in the first place is entirely unknown. Hoopa will go out of its way to search for and steal items of a very specific aspect (specific serial numbers, specific materials of X% content, sizes, weights, year of creation, diameter, and etc.) and hoard them in "treasure piles" in closed off or abandoned places formerly occupied by people. Should these piles ever be found or disturbed by human hands, the Pokemon will abandon them.
Hoopa is very shy; however, it is not cowardly. It will always attempt to flee before any notice of it is taken, but will stand its ground when discovered. If it feels it has not been fully seen and recognised, it will vanish. If it believes it has been fully observed and is under pursuit, it will take one of two actions: it will either abduct whoever observed it, or attempt to "put the enemy to sleep". Hoopa does not understand "death" as a status, and does not recognise the physical signs or symptoms of "harm". To this end, it will fight with full force and deal fatal damage to whatever it is striking at. It recognises blood as a symptom of pain, but not what it represents as an indicator of individual health. Hoopa engages in what it believes to be equal in what it experiences in battle. The foetal figure of Hoopa Obscured is delicate and easily damaged - any sensation felt via the extrusion will be felt by Hoopa Revealed in appropriate proportion (ex: a pinprick upon the hand of Hoopa Obscured will be transferred as a proportionately sized hole in all three hands of Hoopa Revealed on the same side of the body).
Hoopa is one of the few Pokemon confirmed to be literate. How well it can read is unknown, but assumed to be, at minimum, the equivalent of a young adult. It can comprehend signage, iconography, serial numbers, and reference systems / indexes. In terms of literature, it is unclear whether the Pokemon is "read" in a general sense, or is familiar with the concept of fiction / fictionalisation. Its lack of recognition of death suggests either its literary exposure has never encompassed wider, generalised literature, or it was purposefully redirected in its understanding so the concept never made a mark upon it.
knowing that tadc was planned in only two weeks makes me feel a lot more confident and assured about my own oc stories which have been marinating in my head for years longer than that. sometimes i feel like "oh these concepts doesn't feel fully fleshed out enough yet" "are my characters flat? is my lore too convoluted or empty?" but apparently that whole damn circus show with thousands of dollars in merch sales pumped into it has characters and worldbuilding more shallow than an empty swimming pool so why have any excuses huh
like it feels like a huge waste of resources and energy and talent when you put all this money and polish into a show that doesn't execute its premise to its fullest potential and doesn't integrate its inspirations well enough into its themes and where like more than half of its main characters aren't given as much love and screentime as the author's personal fuckass rabbit blorbo who also has major issues with his story arc and character development and who gives a fuck man i've read gay pokemon fanfictions better than this

the strange greeting is really adorable so i tried to recreate it in pixels
don't know how to feel about the new tumblr homescreen posting bar on top just yet but hey it looks neat. you can switch between blogs directly through the home menu so you don't accidentally post on the wrong blog. you can access your queue and drafts super quickly without having to go through your blog's section of the sidebar. they don't have those "staff picks" and "trending" buttons anymore. the posting buttons are smaller but very neat and aesthetically pleasing. actually wait this is probably an extremely rare example of an okayish tumblr update. fuck
i miss her

I could use the green grass for many of my secret golf courses, I would even have room for water and other awesome stuff like sand!
least favorite art youtubers have to be the ones where they constantly make videos glazing and replicating the art techniques and styles of popular japanese/chinese anime artists probably seeing them as the pinnacle of “good art” even though said youtuber’s artstyle is the most bland flavorless shit because they spend more time imitating everyone else rather than actually expressing something unique and true. something about it reeks of orientalism
actually that’s probably my second least favorite my most least favorite are those artists who spend more time making videos on AI art controversies rather than videos on their own art. made worse if they used to post normal shit before the negative effects of AI became a hot topic

Portrait of Seated Woman and Companion Dorsey Hill, 1899 Cyanotype
Among the most accessible of nineteenth-century photographic processes, the cyanotype owes its luminous Prussian-blue tonality to a simple chemistry: paper sensitized with ferric ammonium oxalate and potassium ferrocyanide, exposed to light through a negative and rinsed to reveal the image. First described in 1842, the technique found its widest popular audience between 1880 and 1920, when amateur photographers and the Arts and Crafts movement embraced it for its low cost and painterly effect. This print, made in Dorsey Hill in 1899, presents an unusual double portrait: a young woman seated atop a table, beside her stands a companion whose face bears a visible disfigurement, possibly the result of injury sustained in the Second Boer War, then in its opening months.
