Queen Maria I of Portugal began her reign in 1777 with great promise, becoming Portugal's first undisputed queen regnant. Intelligent, deeply religious, and determined to govern wisely, she reversed many of the unpopular policies of her father's powerful minister and initially earned the admiration of her people. But her reign would become defined not by political achievements, but by an overwhelming series of personal tragedies. The deaths of her husband, King Pedro III, her eldest son and heir, several other close relatives, and her beloved confessor left Maria emotionally devastated. As the years passed, she suffered severe depression, religious delusions, and episodes of paranoia, eventually becoming incapable of ruling. In 1799, her son, the future King João VI, assumed the role of prince regent.

When Napoleon's forces invaded Portugal in 1807, the royal family made the dramatic decision to flee to Brazil rather than risk capture. By this time, Maria's mental illness had become so severe that she believed she was being abducted instead of rescued. Terrified and crying out that she was being kidnapped, the queen resisted those trying to help her and ultimately had to be physically carried aboard the waiting ship. Witnesses watched in sorrow as Portugal's broken monarch was taken from Lisbon across the Atlantic, unaware that she would never see her homeland again.

On this day, the Central Executive Committee formally accepted the Treaty of Union signed in December 1922 in Moscow, marking a decisive step in the creation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. This approval confirmed the political unification of several former territories of the Russian Empire into a single federal socialist state, reshaping the map of Eurasia after years of revolution and civil war. The decision helped solidify the governing structure centered in Moscow.
