I also think about how I started out as someone who identified as having "headmates" and because of that cultural space to describe a non-medical experience I was able to realize at my own pace the trauma behind what I would realize was OSDD. That is a useful thing for culture to have, a neutral or spiritual descriptor for a benign version of something that can become medically significant. I was not 100% aware of my traumas and their depths at the time and if i had had people coming and demanding I dig them up I could very well have retraumatized myself deeply... or worse just fabricated memories which we know the human mind is capable of doing and was a big problem with therapists back when DID was still MPD.

it turns out a lot of people are actually on the same page about whether or not they'd work if they didn't have to earn money, we just all seem to have wildly different definitions of what counts as work. i'll see one person say "of course i would, i'd still want to create art and volunteer in my local community" and another say "hell no i wouldn't, i'd quit work and just create art and volunteer in my local community" and then they look at eachother like they said something incomprehensible.

I attended an optional What to do if ICE comes to your library training and was given much the same advice: make sure someone is recording. Keep them out of arm's reach of any agents, but don't hide that they're recording. Simply being recorded changes the agents' attitude and behavior.
