I’m dedicated to this show so I’m gonna tell you the obvious if you’ve watched at least the opening of Kabaneri, because it foreshadows a bunch of things that will happen in the coming episodes.
While we might believe Mumei is referring to her “brother” as the man who she was with in the first episode and died, Mumei has never been shown to be very forward and easy so she is probably being vague, and the brother she refers to is Ikoma.
The opening completely refutes this and without a doubt, Mumei is Ikoma’s sister who he thinks had been killed by a Kabane.
Here we are shown Ikoma laying on the train tracks looking at something with his eyes wide open and what do we get in the next shot?
Ikoma’s sister turning into:
Then we get a shot of him running towards something, obviously her, which could foreshadow that Ikoma might learn that she is his sister in an abrupt moment which would make him want to reach her after the guilt he feels of leaving her to “die.”
Later on Mumei appears again but this time wearing a black dress she hasn’t been shown in on the show:
Then a shot of Ikoma laying on the floor, looking dead.
Mumei kneels besides him in her black kimono which could mean she is mourning for Ikoma’s death? We don’t know yet.
And now the scene that sells the theory.
Mumei touching the stone Ikoma’s sister gave to him, the one he always has with him. If this isn’t blatant enough I don’t know what is.
When she touches it the stone shines and then the scene turns to her in her usual gear, taking her trademark ribbon off.
More scenes in the first episode to back this up:
Staring at her because he obviously recognizes her but she looks completely different and older.
He ignores it, not realizing she was who he thought she is.
We are shown Mumei speaking of her brother multiple times throughout the series without anyone questioning who said brother is.
In Episode 3 we are shown Ikoma’s sister was bitten on the neck, apparently killing her according to Ikoma.
And what’s the place Mumei always touches before she begins fighting?
Now what could this mean? If Mumei is a Kabaneri, and Ikoma is the other Kabaneri in the show as of now, could this mean it runs in their family? Might they have some sort of immunity to the Kabane that lets them become Kabaneri? Anyhow, the answer has been all along right there in the opening, only Episode 3 finally made this theory make sense since we are shown Ikoma’s backstory.
