There are some weird things about that story, particularly the version that Hoid is involved in.

As someone who's also working on a novel, do you have any tips for publishing? I've written everything on google docs and I've tried converting it all to a pdf but my test audience says it's not as accessible as it seems

Uhhhh unfortunately the only formats I use for writing are google docs and Microsoft Word. I’ve been able to send word files via email before but when I submit to my writing group I just use docs.

You could try just directly sharing a doc with people, move the part of your work you want to share into a new file so they’re not seeing your new stuff if you don’t want that and set the sharing privileges to comment only so they won’t be able to edit anything? Sorry, that’s the only thing I know 😬
