the cradle of humankind is a world heritage site made up of many limestone caves. these caves are home to a large number of hominin fossils, some dating back to 3.5 million years ago. for example, the rising star cave system contains the chamber of stars, in which were discovered fifteen fossil skeletons of an extinct species of hominin, homo naledi.
