It would make more sense for Mercury to represent technology because of its characteristics. Mercury is a fast moving planet representing sending, translating and receiving messages. Internet is all about sending and receiving messages.

Square and opposition are not harsh aspects. They are just intense. Not all squares and oppositions are inherently bad, it depends on the planets forming those aspects. For example, having an opposition or a square with Venus (especially in a night chart) or Jupiter (especially in a day chart) may not be as bas as it seems, since they are both benefics. However, when a planet form the opposition or the square with Mars (especially in a day chart) or Saturn (especially in a night chart), then those aspects can be harsh or negative, since they are both malefics.

People with multiple planets in the bound of Venus or Jupiter may experience life full of joy and pleasure. Meanwhile, people with multiple planets in the bound of Mars or Saturn may experience the life full of hardships and sorrow.

Angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th and 10th) are the most visible and the strongest houses, representing the most significant areas of our lives. Succedent houses (2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th) have the average strength, so the planets express their energy in the average way. Cadent houses (3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th) are the weakest houses, representing falling away from the path.
