All of my Spoonie Student Resources - Updated Spring 2018
For my student followers (and anyone else who could benefit from this info).
We’re (for the most part) a few weeks into our semesters now, so I thought it would be a good time to share some spoonie student resources. I’ve written quite a bit on these topics over the past few years, so it feels relevant to collect all of that info in one place. So, here we go, all of my spoonie student resources/advice, organized by category.
General Advice/Tips:
general advice on studying and academics
a collaborative list with concussedperspective
exam week tips
A professor’s wise advice: “You don’t get extra points for trying extra hard.”
How do I study math with chronic pain?
Communicating with Professors and others:
“Brief” guide to talking to your professors about your chronic illness/disability (I called it brief, but it’s actually rather long…)
Communicating chronic pain in educational settings
Talk to your teachers!
Reflections on how I learned to communicate my pain and disability
Remember to say Thank You
Remember your perspective is not universal
Surviving Campus Life:
Dorm living and roommate advice
dealing with sensory issues on campus
A more-portable shower chair alternative
Dealing with the Disability Services Office:
What are my accommodations?
Do I use a testing center?
How did I get a reduced course load?
Productivity & Time Management:
done list
Some Encouragement:
For students with sleep disorders
Why Accommodations Matter (also a bit of a story about how things can get better as a disabled student)
Picking a School:
general advice on picking a school
reflections on disability services during my graduate school search
affirmations that I used during my grad school search
Educationally-relevant Assistive Technology:
pencil/pen grips from hair curlers
Levo book stand
Overview of speech-to-text tools
Options for computer input: pointing devices (part 1 & part 2)
math without handwriting
Workrave: a tool for managing computer use time
my study space (from my old apartment, features several pieces of assistive tech)
AT you shouldn’t buy (because you can get it for free!)
Low cost eye-tracking
Using low cost eye-tracking to write computer code
Walk-aid Scooter review (great for me on campus!)
Email templates:
request for disability-related meeting at beginning of semester
textbook info request template
Example emails:
Online training I couldn’t complete
Housing Concerns
Asking for a shuttle schedule
Email I drafted for a fellow spoonie returning to classes after surgery
I’m sorry I can’t stay awake!
Oral Exams
Basics: what are oral exams and why might they be a good accommodation?
General advice on prepping for oral exams
How do math exams work with process vs. theory?
Do I prefer written or oral exams
Art & Other Reflections on Academic Ableism
“So what you mean is…”
“All students are welcome here”
Intro programming text is super ableist
Ableism in systems vs. people
Accommodations don’t remove disability
Some personal experiences & reflections that may help you feel less alone:
Nobody waits…
Bureaucracy at a new school (and a follow up!)
Non functional door openers
Non accessible IT resources
Poor accessibility on campus
Elevators and invisible illness/disability
Jokes in poor taste
Scholarships and reduced course load
Brainstorming academic accommodations pre grad school
Some reflections on academic ableism
ableism in final exams
ableism in grad school search
more academic ableism
yep, I had a research meeting in my pajamas
writing from a place of frustration: should I be a student?
Reflections on negative experiences with disability services
You know you’re a chronically ill college student when… (an attempt at humor)
Mad at my professor for being insensitive
Please feel free to share this (and/or any of the posts linked here) if you find it helpful!
Also, if there are other topics you’d like to know (more) about, feel free to send an ask. (No promises on when I’ll have time to write a full post, though.)
shit man this got me emotional
left: the Nebra sky disc, circa 1600 BCE, showing the Moon, Sun, and stars in gold on copper - the oldest depiction of the cosmos in the world
right: the Webb Space Telescope, July 2022, revealing thousands of baby galaxies forming in the early days of the universe - humankind’s deepest look into the sky
Me: 🤓 i know how to do it now
* 20.mins later* how did we do that again?

Half way done with my 6 wk summer classes—I'm so ready for them to end immediately. Information Literacy & Research when I literally work at a joint public-academic library is crazy... and it's group based work which makes me want to tear my own head off and run it over. Just a couple more weeks... 💀

I feel like I have risen about my mortal flesh and ascended to godhood rn bc I think I did really well on my astrophysics midterm. That's the post.

Studyblr is so funny people will be like ‘cozy biochem vibes 🍓’ with a photo of troise phosphate isomerase beta barrel with a little pastry. Girl I am fighting for my life here.

It's gonna be eat, breath, sleep my astro course this week. I have hw I forgot about that's due tonight and a midterm Thursday that I Also forgot existed. chat am I cooked 💀
Will be updating on my hw adventures bc tell me why one of the questions wants me to "propose a new equation of gravitation" or some shit be so fr LMFAO??

Sorry I haven't posted in weeks, I think trying to have a structure is having the opposite effect it should and gives me demand avoidance instead of being helpful 💀
So, I'm going to stop expecting every post I make to be a journal entry and instead I'm just gonna start "academically shitposting" if you will lollll
First, a quick update since it's spring break!
The semester has been going well--stressful, but well! Experimental is super fun, as anticipated. The first pic in this post is a photo I took of an electron beam as part of our lab on determining the specific charge of an electron!! Astro is absolutely fascinating. The hw is challenging, but I can tell that it will be helpful! Analytical is kind of kicking my ass. I failed the first exam... I am going to try to do more practice problems and study more from the book to do better. Philosophy of science is also SUPER fun. I wish our class periods were longer! Finally, my CS class is Going. I'm not necessarily enjoying it, but I don't hate it either lol
That's my update for now, stay tuned for aforementioned shitposting. It'll probably include rants abt homework and cool stuff I learn lolol

Even when you're tired, remember why you started.
- Tuesday, Jan 14, 2025 -
Forgot to take any kind of picture today, but I had a good first day of Astrophysics and Analytical Mechanics! I can tell they're going to be intense, but I'm very excited nonetheless.
Today's accomplishments:
On time to classes
Reviewed notes after classes and cleared up fuzzy concepts
Did most of my first assigned philosophy reading
oh also ... idk how I've gotten this far in life without knowing this sooner, but I JUST made sense of the difference between arctan (tan^-1) and cot (1/tan) ... I have been so blind. but I finally see the light LMFAOOO

FIRST DAY BACK: SUCCESS!
Experimental is going to be so much fun omg. The experiments we can choose from are all so cool, and a lot of them are classics like measuring the specific charge of the electron with the photoelectric effect or the two-slit wave interference with a single photon. I'm so excited!
Philosophy of science is going to be Hella reading but I'm excited for that too!
I got my astro class and analytical class tomorrow, and I'll do some of my asynchronous CS work as well, and then I'll have officially started all my classes. Feeling good!!
The photo is of the pond outside the physics building; I liked how the edges were still frozen 🤭
- Sunday, Jan 12, 2025 -
On god, this semester is my academic comeback. manifesting good study habits and strong self-discipline.
I got my cumulative due dates spreadsheet all set up before classes officially start in the morning, and I got my new desk all decorated and tidy so I feel motivated to study. I'm feelin really optimistic!!
Courses I'm taking this semester:
Elements of Astrophysics (finally!!!)
Analytical Mechanics
Methods of Experimental Physics
Object-oriented programming
Philosophy of Science

not to be a number nerd on main but 2025 (45^2) will be the only square year most of us ever experience. the last one was 1936 and the next one will be 2116
Be there and be squared
REBLOG THIS POST IF YOU ARE A MATH ENJOYER
No it is not optional, I desperately need to follow y’all so that there is more math on my dashboard.
I'm an astrophysics study blog, so there may be some math here and there!
