Like the above note suggests, she never got conquered by Rome like Khemet. Or by the Persians. Or the Macedonians. Or the Arabs. Actually she legit conquered Khemet that one time-
Sudan (OC)
Unlike Greece and Egypt, Sudanâs ancient predecessor, Kush, is not his mother, nor did he ever know her directly. Kush is his grandmother!

i don't really understand why you would be pro-zoo. like i understand nature reserves and sanctuaries where people can observe from afar, but it doesn't seem right to me when they're locked up in generally small confined areas for people to watch them do nothing all day. idk maybe i'm getting this wrong, and i still really respect you, i just don't understand this. like i interned at a zoo and felt uncomfortable with how small their living areas were and how they had no stimulation
Zoos donât look like this anymore.
They look like this:
Good zoos do not keep their animals in âtiny spacesâ with no enrichment.  Iâm not pro-roadside zoo.  Iâm pro-accredited zoo.  Zoos are incredibly important for conservation and education.
Are Zoos Necessary?
The Importance of Zoos: Resource Post
Why Zoos and Aquariums Matter: Assessing the Impact of a Visit to a Zoo or Aquarium
Why I Want to be a Keeper
Why I Believe in Zoos
There should be way more pictures of modern zoos so i just add some more
Seriously zoos do so much important conservation work as well I hate when people shit all over zoos as if the animals are locked up and not looked after
The SF Zoo has two sea lions. Now, if you know SF, you know that sea lions are a Thing. Theyâre all over Pier 39 and various other beaches in N California. In fact, the zoo is near the ocean, so there are sea lions not 200 yards from the zoo entrance. So having sea lions in the zoo seems sort of superfluous.
Except the sea lions are blind. One was found as an adult after suffering a gun shot wound to the face that destroyed his eyes. The other was found as an adolescent, weak and starving because it had been blinded and unable to hunt. So they were rescued and introduced and the zoo built them a nice pool where they can swim and sunbathe and people toss them fish. Itâs not the biggest exhibit, or the fanciest. But itâs a home for them, where theyâre safe and well fed. Sea lions arenât the most romantic of animals, but theyâre a part of SF culture and a lot of us have a soft spot for the loud, bulbous things. And because of zoos, these two get to live long, happy lives.
Whenever anyone complains about zoos, I think about Silent Knight and Henry.Â
I think itâs St. Louis zoo that is saving big cats in Africa. Scientists couldnât figure out what was killing off the local lion population. They were dying off from Canine Distemper. The local unvaccinated dogs of the towns would spread the disease to other animals or have it themselves. When the lions ate the infected animals they would catch it as well. You know what that Zoo is doing to stop this disease? They are going over to those towns and vaccinating the dogs for free. The community loves it and people from other villages comes for miles to get their dogs vaccinated as well.
They also do work with camel populations because the local human population use the camels for food sources the zoos help monitor the camels health.
Another zoo, I want to say itâs the Oregon zoo but donât quote me on that, is helping female inmates. The zoo works with the female prisons by encouraging the inmates to assist in the breeding and raising of endangered species of butterflies. They plant the specific plants that the butterflies and catapillars need, raise them, and release them. These inmates get noted in any scientific journals that get published. They are giving these inmates a sense of accomplishment and validation.
Zoos not only save species but bring together and assist communities in an effort to save the environment. Zoos, good zoos, are essential to the future and I will fight anyone who tries to say otherwise.
PS you donât see PETA doing any of this.
One of the local zoos in my area at one point rescued a bald eagle that had been shot and kept it in the zoo to let it recuperate until they freed it again. Some of the zoos in my state will keep injured animals there until they heal again.
Helsinki Zoo is the world leader in snow leopard and Amur leopard conservation, in their care these endangered species have managed to breed more than anywhere else in captivity and this in turn has enabled the re-introduction of these animals back to their native habitats. https://www.korkeasaari.fi/helsinki-zoo/
I work at a zoo that is instrumental in the California Condor recovery program (among dozens of other conservation projects). We went from 42 surviving individuals left to over 400, over 200 of whom are in the wild. Weâre part of the amur leopard species survival plan with two young animals who are eagerly attempting to make babies. We host one of North Americaâs only bachelor troops of western lowland gorillas, preserving the social structure of wild gorillas. All of our bald eagles are rescues who would not survive in the wild. All our keepers participate in field research and conservation work in addition to a full time team of conservationists. We host the most genetically valuable male Masai giraffe in North America, who has sired 5 offspring with 1 on the way, increasing the genetic diversity of his entire species. If youâre against zoos, you donât know what zoos do.
Super, SUPER important thread.
Also zoos tend to do a lot of breeding and conservation work with smaller, less charismatic species like invertebrates and amphibians. Those species are extremely important in the ecosystem but donât get the same notoriety as the charismatic megafauna.
pls donât let this flop

Amity: Part 2
Part One | Part Two | Part 3 (Coming soon)
Chapter 2 word count: 8,653
Alfred sits for his first treaty signing, learns some Swedish, and prepares for an journey across Europe that is not lacking for its share of risks.
As he paced the perimeter of Saint-Eustache beside Francis, Alfred began to realize that there was an entire world outside of America that he knew absolutely nothing about. It wasnât Europe, or Africa, or even Asia. This world was not a world of land and sea, but of customs and traditions spanning back to the dawn of time, from whence itâd evolved completely independent of human affairs. It was a world of celestial bodies in human form, orbiting and dancing around each other like eternal mercury.
âWe are not humans, Alfred,â Francis was speaking softly.
âI know,â Alfred said. Even after hundreds of years of knowing, hearing himself admit it out loud made his skin itch uncomfortably. âBut we⌠our people are us," he said, a crease forming between his eyebrows as he frowned. "How can we operate outside of them, their culture, their⌠rules?â He had no other word for it. Even ifâwhenâArthur gave him his independence, he would always be dependent on his people, it was a fundamental truth that he felt bone-deep.
âOui, they are us,â Francis agreed, âbut you must remember, petite frĂŠre, that we are also us.â

The Kirkland family in all their dysfunctional glory.Â
I was inspired by this post by @stirringwindsâ (itâs amazing, check it out!)
Names crossed out in red indicate the siblingsâ personal surnames that have been replaced by âKirklandâ while Arthur represents them all as head of the United Kingdom.
Apologies for the America-heavy commentary, Alfred and Matthew are the two characters I write/draw the most for, so it comes through in other projects.

Blueâs Feathers and Wings Compendium: Standard Wing Shapes
Part 1 [Standard ]| Part 2 [Atypical] | Feather Markings | Tail Feathers
I have expanded the traditional 4 types; Highspeed, Elliptical, Low Aspect and High Aspect ratio, because they were very narrow and vague categories for the most part, adding High Energy, Thermal Soaring, Night Glider, and Passerine wings. I feel that these extra types make it easier to understand and visualize the differences and similarities between wing shapes.
Iâve renamed Low Aspect to Powered Soaring, and High Aspect to Dynamic Soaring for the purposes of the fact that names made it hard to understand purpose and were easily confusable.Â
A lot of these wing types are also affected by tailfeather shape and size, and that will change their agility and energy expenditure as the tail also generates lift.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (2014) dir. Anthony and Joe Russo
âMy king is putting aside his wife. They say he already has another in mind.â England said it like a man trying not to sound frustrated. But it was clear to Portugal that he was. He had known the man long enough to see the feelings in his face.
Only after a dinner and light conversation had it finally come spilling out, as England got comfortable enough.
He asked, watching closely for a reaction, âHow many is this now?â England let out a very long sigh and said, âThis is the fifth. That is not the worst part.â
He swallowed hard, like the most unpleasant truth was just on the tip of his tongue. Portugal prodded him gently, âWhat is worse?â England ran one of his hands over his face, before finally saying, âI have met the lady, and she is only seventeen. She is practically a child.â
He looked pale and ill, like the concept of taking a teenager to bed was sickening him. Portugal said, offhandedly, âHe sounds like my father.â
The blonde raised one eyebrow and said, âWhat do you mean?â Portugal picked up one of mostly empty wine glasses from the table and drained the dregs from it.
Then he said, âHave you ever questioned how he had so many sons? Or what happened to the women he bedded.â
He heard the sharp sting of bitterness in his voice. It was always there when he discussed Rome. But, it was safe to show it with England. The blonde shook his head, âMy mother said he was an immoral tyrant, and I never thought more about it.â
Portugal put down the glass, which was now empty. He chewed on his own lower lip for a moment before he said, âWould you like to hear the story?â
England seemed to hesitate for a moment, like he was questioning whether it would be asking Portugal to recount pain. He knew him well enough to know that Rome was a sore subject. But, he felt like turning down the offer would be rude.
But, he finally nodded. Portugal shifted in his chair and said, âThis is what I know from what Iâve found of him:
When he was young, they say he loved Ancient Greece. I have found some of the poems that he wrote for her, and he claimed it was the truest love he ever felt.
I canât know if that was ever true.
Perhaps he did love her when they were married, or perhaps he did it for power. His life seemed to be a quest to always have more.
Greece gave him an heir. From what I can tell, Byzantium was the first son he ever had. He was elated to have a son, and celebrated it for the world to know. But, celebrations were always followed with restlessness for him. Once he got what he wanted, then he had to find something new to conquer.
No one knows when he first met my mother, Carthage. Â But I think he began to stray when he had a legitimate successor. He never wrote her beautiful poems, or gave her lavish gifts. I remember he would visit for a few days at a time, but keep to himself. He arrived and left without ceremony, rarely even asking to see me. There was no celebration for me or for Tony, or ever any acknowledgment that we existed.
After Tony was born, they started fighting. I remembered hearing the yelling through the walls. Though I never heard what they said clearly, I imagine she wanted him to acknowledge Tony and me as more than just bastards. It is what any mother would do for her sons.
She deserved better than him. She ruled the sea, and rode elephants to battle. Her intelligence and skill was unmatched, even if he thought he was the kind of the world.
She was too strong-willed for him, and he knew it. If he had married her, he would have been unable to control her. He couldnât do that when she was just a mistress.
I know that Ancient Greece left him, and I imagine that she found out that he had two other children. That must not have rested well with her, and worried her about the position of her son. His absences would be enough for anyone to hope for better.
I do not know when Heracles was born, or who his father was. If he Is Romeâs son, then he wasnât cursed with our fatherâs looks, or his temper.
The fighting between my mother and Rome just got worse, and my mother sent us away before it came to war between them. I remember her hugging us both before putting us on a boat set on a course for Iberia. It was the last time I saw her.Â
I know in my heart that she protected us from him. He was a pitiless man who killed her for insisting that Tony and I were given what we should have been. He did not want his heir to have to compete.
Now we will always be known as Romeâs bastards, and I know Tony resents that. I made peace with it years ago.
What could you expect from a man who murdered his twin brother? What could we really believe he would give us?â
He paused for a moment and then looked at England and said, âThis is where it becomes relevant.â
England thought he heard pain when Portugal recounted Carthageâs fate. But, he dared not ask his friend. It was too much to push for more vulnerability, when what he was being given was already a gift.
Portugal continued, âWith only one legitimate son, and an expanding empire, he decided that he needed more. Perhaps he began to understand that he was mortal, even with our long lives. No empire lasts forever.
He found a new bride named Veneti. I have heard that she was seventeen when he married her. I supposed he tired of strong women, and chose one he could dominate.
She bore him twins, who he swore were the spitting image of him and Remus. He thought it showed that the gods favored him, even when his empire started to wane. Thatâs when he chose Feliciano as his heir, even over Byzantium. He saw himself reborn and thought it was fate.
Ironic, donât you think? He disinherited his eldest in secret, and still expected to be welcomed in Constantinople when he fled from Germania. He chose to vanish rather than face his end.
He thought as his sons we all needed to prove ourselves to him when he never proved himself capable of being a father. I would rather be my motherâs son than any child of his.â
Then he drew in a breath and stopped talking. England felt like this was the end of the story, and he would not pry.
He tried to change the subject back to the present, to prevent Portugal from delving too deeply into his feelings about his father. He said, âWhat do you think this all means for Henry? Romeâs empire fell to pieces after he died. I hope that will not happen to me.â
Portugal leaned forward onto his elbows and said, âIt means that his most competent heir will be the last one he expects, and it may very well be the one that he refuses to acknowledge.â
