Someday people are going to post ads like this with captions like "the future we were promised..."
Understanding that there is no objectively good art has many benefits, but a favorite of mine is being granted the ability to see that you hate corporate memphis for the same reason people hated fruitiger aero ten years ago, and that people will like corporate memphis ten years from now for the same reason you like fruitiger aero now: because it's the opposite of the thing that's in popular use right now, and reminds you of being ten years younger
The process is beginning

writing about dysfunctional familial relationships is fun but watch out! if you don't mix it up your audience may identify a pattern that says something about your relationships with your own family

kinda on the same subject, I gave my protagonist a good relationship with his parents and a largely stable, happy childhood because I thought it would be interesting to take a person who has those healthy bonds and see how he'd weather quite suddenly becoming a caretaker for his father and an emotional support for his mother, and then just as suddenly being bereaved of his father. he's an only child, so he's lost half his immediate family. he's also semi-estranged from his father's family, and while his maternal family is supportive, they live 100+ miles away. so, essentially, what happens when you pull one leg out from under a three-legged table?
You can explore how a seemingly well-adjusted person can become so quickly fucked up by being a therapist to your own mother especially when you have no support network. Part of you fights loneliness by blurring the lines of child/therapist and part of you fights turmoil by shutting down forever. Going crazy in the caves in the woods speedrun
oh I have experience with that! 😀

my secondary protagonist Amber (his ex-girlfriend) in contrast grew up with a VERY dysfunctional family, the youngest of three and removed enough in age from her older siblings that she grew up essentially an only child, with parents who fought a lot and didn't have much time for her. her parents are def one of those couples you look at and you're like "these two should have divorced 15 years ago". her older brother was also diagnosed with schizophrenia while he was in college and she was in high school, so her parents were paying even LESS attention to her while she was in that very critical and vulnerable stage of development (not really their fault, but still).
so she's always felt like she has to go it alone, and one of her most serious incompatibilities with the protagonist, AJ, when they were dating was what she saw as his overreliance on other people. I think she maybe envies him for his good childhood and his relationship with his parents, and then when his father dies she realizes she struggles to relate to the depth of his grief, and feels incredibly guilty about it as she watches him fall apart.

For someone who was never meant for this world, I must confess I'm suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe I'm not leaving… maybe I'm going home.
