Transition Words For Your Essays

Doing a cardio exam when you have no idea what youâre listening for is like: âyep, I can hear the heart⌠the heart is pumping. Patient has a heart. Good.â
Me the first time I heard a rub: what the frickity frack is that? Patient: seriously???
I said to my preceptor, âThe heart is squeaking. What the fuck?â
And she laughed.
Got a murmur once for which i didnt need a stetoscope
O_O What the shit is squeaking
What y'all listening too for Christ sakes??
My favorite was once going back and reading a dictation that said, âno murmurs appreciated,â and I actually laughed hugely for minutes because you could hear that blower across the room with no stethoscopeâŚ
I believe thatâs why we use the term âappreciateâ. A murmur may be there, but you canât blame some poor soul for missing the obvious :)
I think it is more distressing to not be able to appreciate the Apex beat than the murmur, and it does happen with large patients
Omg I can never feel the apex beat unless the patient is skinny ⌠fake it til you make it! Although, I heard that once my uni put a patient with dextrocardia in the exam, so everyone was panicking and just saying they could feel the apex beat, despite the fact the heart was on the opposite side. How mean of them!
How to Study Like a Harvard Student
Taken from Sophia Chua-Rubenfeld, daughter of the Tiger Mother
Preliminary Steps 1. Choose classes that interest you. That way studying doesnât feel like slave labor. If you donât want to learn, then I canât help you. 2. Make some friends. See steps 12, 13, 23, 24. General Principles 3. Study less, but study better. 4. Avoid Autopilot Brain at all costs. 5. Vague is bad. Vague is a waste of your time. 6. Write it down. 7. Suck it up, buckle down, get it done. Plan of Attack Phase I: Class 8. Show up. Everything will make a lot more sense that way, and you will save yourself a lot of time in the long run. 9. Take notes by hand. I donât know the science behind it, but doing anything by hand is a way of carving it into your memory. Also, if you get bored you will doodle, which is still a thousand times better than ending up on stumbleupon or something. Phase II: Study Time 10. Get out of the library. The sheer fact of being in a library doesnât fill you with knowledge. Eight hours of Facebooking in the library is still eight hours of Facebooking. Also, people who bring food and blankets to the library and just stay there during finals week start to smell weird. Go home and bathe. You can quiz yourself while you wash your hair. 11. Do a little every day, but donât let it be your whole day. âThis afternoon, I will read a chapter of something and do half a problem set. Then, I will watch an episode of South Park and go to the gymâ ALWAYS BEATS âStarting right now, I am going to read as much as I possibly canâŚoh wow, now itâs midnight, Iâm on page five, and my room reeks of ramen and dysfunction.â 12. Give yourself incentive. Thereâs nothing worse than a gaping abyss of study time. If you know youâre going out in six hours, youâre more likely to get something done. 13. Allow friends to confiscate your phone when they catch you playing Angry Birds. Oh and if you think you need a break, you probably donât. Phase III: Assignments 14. Stop highlighting. Underlining is supposed to keep you focused, but itâs actually a one-way ticket to Autopilot Brain. You zone out, look down, and suddenly you have five pages of neon green that you donât remember reading. Write notes in the margins instead. 15. Do all your own work. You get nothing out of copying a problem set. Itâs also shady. 16. Read as much as you can. No way around it. Stop trying to cheat with Sparknotes. 17. Be a smart reader, not a robot. Ask yourself: What is the author trying to prove? What is the logical progression of the argument? You can usually answer these questions by reading the introduction and conclusion of every chapter. Then, pick any two examples/anecdotes and commit them to memory (write them down). They will help you reconstruct the authorâs argument later on. 18. Donât read everything, but understand everything that you read. Better to have a deep understanding of a limited amount of material, than to have a vague understanding of an entire course. Once again: Vague is bad. Vague is a waste of your time. 19. Bullet points. For essays, summarizing, everything. Phase IV: Reading Period (Review Week) 20. Once again: do not move into the library. Eat, sleep, and bathe. 21. If you donât understand it, it will definitely be on the exam. Solution: textbooks; the internet. 22. Do all the practice problems. This one is totally tiger mom. 23. People are often contemptuous of rote learning. Newsflash: even at great intellectual bastions like Harvard, you will be required to memorize formulas, names and dates. To memorize effectively: stop reading your list over and over again. It doesnât work. Say it out loud, write it down. Remember how you made friends? Have them quiz you, then return the favor. 24. Again with the friends: ask them to listen while you explain a difficult concept to them. This forces you to articulate your understanding. Remember, vague is bad. 25. Go for the big picture. Try to figure out where a specific concept fits into the course as a whole. This will help you tap into Big Themes â every class has Big Themes â which will streamline what you need to know. You can learn a million facts, but until you understand how they fit together, youâre missing the point. Phase V: Exam Day 26. Crush exam. Get A.

advice for freshman
dec. 26, 2016: what NOT TO DO vs. what TO DO as a student
hey, everyone!!!
after rambling on and on about my first semester as a high school junior in this post, I have decided to compile a list of tips (if u can call them that) of things you should think of doing versus things you SHOULD NOT DO, LIKE, EVER as a student! iâm planning on following these things during the upcoming semester.
DO NOT:
Study everything the day before your exam. First of all, itâs just too much stress. Plus, thereâs no way youâll be able to remember everything while testing. Just, donât do it. I had done this multiple times last semester, and I just never want to experience something like that ever again. Here is a way to break your study time/material into chunks. Here is another way.
Eat nothing in school. (Unless itâs Ramadan or something.) You need to eat, youâll feel dizzy and weak and your health will be negatively affected without (HEALTHY) food. That happened to me. What I (generally) take to school are a few crackers, my own homemade cheese âdipâ (or some Babybel/string cheese), yogurt, and a little candy bar.
Spend too much time in the bathroom/shower. This is THE WORST thing I do to myselfâŚthis is my âgo-toâ method of procrastination. I just shower or spend time in the bathroom for, like A LOT OF TIME per day. Just take this as a little piece of advice from me: donât spend time you could be practicing for that math test, badly singing Whitney Houston songs. Just donât. Your future self will thank you.
Study continuously for prolonged periods of time. I HATE sitting down for a long time, oh my gosh. My back hurts, my butt hurts, I start to get drowsy. Refer to tip #9 of the âDoâsâ for a solution.
Start a TV show during the school year. Unless you have PERFECT time management skills, just donât get hooked into a TV show. Iâm 99.98% sure youâll binge-watch and regret your life. Iâm really glad I didnât start watching Gossip Girl last semester, and Iâm not gonna do it this next semester, either.
DO:
Invest in a planner or start a bullet journal. Iâve used both methods. Just get any cheap old notebook, or, if you can afford it and you want to, splurge a little and just record all upcoming events and everything you need to do. You donât have to spend 1229834 hours decorating your planner/bujo like the perfect ones you see here on tumblr. Maybe add a little color code, a little doodle here and there. Just decorate it however you want (or donât!!!) as long as youâre not taking away precious study time. I personally have a 2017 planner that Iâve recently started to use, so Iâm just gonna stick with that, tbh.
Designate a day per week/two weeks to just review past/current material taken in a particular course. Okay, in the past Iâve been too lazy to actually do this, but I AM gonna start doing this next semester. Iâm probably leave the weekend for physics and chemistry, and maybe Sunday for biologyâŚI think Iâm gonna make a specific post about that later.
Stay hydrated! Oh my gosh, this one is so important. Whenever I donât bring a water bottle to school, I end up cranky, sleepy, and suffering from a headache. For those reasons, I think it is always a good idea to take a water bottle with you to school.
Find time to exercise. It is rather hypocritical of me, a lazyass slob, to say this, but you pretty much ALWAYS have SOME time during the week for a workout. Even once or twice. Not gonna lie to myself anymore.
Do as much âhomeworkâ as you can in school. I have a total of 45 minutes of break per school day, so Iâm going to use those to do work. The only problem I have is finding someplace I wonât be distracted by my friends. I think Iâve got that covered, though.
Organize your binders/folders/whatever frequently. Just do it and YOU WILL NOTICE A BIG DIFFERENCE in how quickly you finish your tasks. I have an expandable file folder in which I keep any papers/notes/stuff I write or receive throughout the week, and then after the end of the week I spend time filing them into big binders for each subject.
Maintain a clean and tidy room + desk. I literally CANNOT focus if my study area is messy. My grades DROP. Itâs hard to study when you have an area the size of a large textbook to do work in, and a pile of papers/clothes/BOTH at your feet. I advise you to tidy (which does NOT mean redecorate) your desk before your study session, just to get some more space to think and do work.
Join some kind of school club/extracurricular activity. Joining my schoolâs Model UN has given me so much joy and Iâve met so many wonderful people. I really advise you all to join something!! Just remember, manage your time wisely!!!
Use the Pomodoro method to study. Itâs simple yet effective. Try it and youâll understand what I mean. Iâve especially aced a ton of memorization-based tests because of this method.
Start working on projects early. Not only does this reduce stress levels, it also may help you boost your grade! If you experience any issues, you can just write your question(s) down on a little sticky note and ask your teacher instead of panicking at 1 AM!!!!
Good luck to us all!!! <3 Rawan
The Full Potential Challenge
Ever wonder what your life would be like if you lived up to your full potential? Would your body be healthier? Your skin clearer? Bank account bigger? I think about these things all the time, and, judging my a previous post, you guys do to. Below is a chart designed to help all of us live up to our full potential. Iâve broken it down into time frames to help keep you from getting overwhelmed. Write the chart down and hang it someplace where you can see it all the time. I will be starting this challenge tomorrow, 9/8. Iâll check in with you guys every Sunday to track my progress. I have specific goals in mind for myself, and you guys should make some too! I really want to know how you guys are doing. Tag your progress posts with #sbfpc so I can track it and take a look. Letâs get to it!
EVERY MORNING
Stretch. First thing. Really give your body enough time to wake up. Touch your toes. Roll out your shoulders. Do not hit snooze!
Do your full skincare routine. I have mine detailed here, but do whatever works for you and your complexion. Be gentle and consistent.Â
Brush your teeth and floss. I used to be a big floss-skipper too, but youâd be amazed at how dig of a difference it makes. Rinse with a whitening mouthwash. I use one by Crest, and I notice a major difference in my teethâs overall whiteness in just a few days.
Give yourself enough time to get ready. Whether youâre a wash-and-go kind of girl, or someone who spends an hour doing a full contouring routine before class (and either one is fine!), make sure you arenât rushing. If you need to wake up a few minutes earlier than normal, so be it. Rushing sets an awful, stressed-out tone for the rest of the day. Allow yourself to be relaxed before taking on the day.
Eat something. Iâm not going to say eat a big breakfast, because some people (myself included) just canât eat in the morning. But you should eat, or at least bring a little something with you to work or school. If you canât eat a full breakfast, grab a fruit! You wonât be as hungry come lunch time, making you less likely to gorge yourself.
Shower. You can do this at night, in the morning, whatever. Again, this is something you should allow some time for. I donât wash my hair every day, but I do condition it every day (from the ears down). Scrub yourself with a delicious-smelling body wash. If you shave, make yourself as smooth as a dolphin, dude. If you donât, then donât and donât ever ever ever let anyone make you feel bad or weird about it. When you get out of the shower, wrap yourself in a fluffy towel and totally slather your sexy self with lotion. Top to bottom. Do it as soon as you can post-shower so it can really sink in.Â
Put leave-in condition throughout your damp hair and comb it through.
Put on an outfit that makes you feel good! So important!
Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. Drink water!!!!!
Take a look at your daily to-do list. Knock out the most pressing stuff first. Take pride when you cross things off your list.
Make your bed! Oh my god, make your bed. Do it. Do it. Do it.Â
EVERY AFTERNOONÂ
Follow the âtouch it onceâ approach. This is a truly life-changing thing. When a task is in front of you, no matter how big or small, just do it right then and there. How many times have you gotten a work email or homework assignment and thought, âEh, Iâll do it laterâ? And then later never comes? Once something pops up, do it once. Squash it and be done. Cross things off your list and feel like a badass.
Try to go for a walk at lunch. Even one little lap around the block or campus will reenergize you like nobodyâs business.Â
Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. Drink water!!!!!
Be present. This is so hard for me too, but you have to make a major effort to be present in whatever youâre doing. Be engaged and plugged-in and just exist in the moment. Give 100 percent.
Be friendly to friends and strangers. A smile goes a long way.
Eat something. Eat what you packed for lunch (see below) and take a break from working while you do it. You need âyou timeâ!
EVERY EVENING
Take your makeup off as soon as youâre in for the night. Wash your face with your full routine and let your skin have a break.Â
Workout. You can also do this in the morning. Whatever works for you. Make a great playlist and go hard af. Get your cardio in. Get your strength training in. Earn every freaking sweat bead forming on your forehead. Earn your shower!
Knock out your homework. Life is infinitely better you donât have anything hanging over your head. Half the time, the energy and emotion you spent dreading/putting off your work is ten times worse than the work itself.
Make a list of what needs to be done tomorrow. Itâll set you up for success the next day, and you wonât forget anything!
Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. Drink water!!!!!
Lay out your clothes for tomorrow. This will save you SO MUCH TIME in the morning omg I canât even tell you how important this is.
Eat something great. And once youâve decided to be done eating for the night, be done. Brush your teeth so you canât eat again.
After brushing, do a whitening treatment. Whether itâs classic baking soda, a Crest white strip, or a laser. Do something. And floss! Retainers in too, ladies 0:)
Relax! Take a few hours to do what YOU want to do. Scroll through Tumblr, binge on some Netflix, FaceTime gossip with your friends, anything. Do whatever makes you happiest.Â
Shut the electronics off an hour before you want to go to bed. Put your phone on sleep mode. If you stare at the screen, it will keep you awake and alert and you wonât be able to fall asleep. A good nightâs sleep is crucial for weightless and general happiness lol
Do a quick sweep of your room and see if thereâs anything you can put away real quick. A clean space is a happy space.
Crawl into your bed (arenât you happy you took the time to make it?!) and read a book by lamplight for a while. When you start to feel sleepy, go to sleep. Donât push it. You kicked ass today and you deserve rest.Â
EVERY WEEKEND
Do something with your friends. It just has to be one thing. Even if youâre just hanging out at the coffee shop, spending time with your squad will make you a better, happier person.
Drink water. Drink water. Drink water. Drink water!!!!!
Do something just for you. Set your laptop up in the bathroom and watch a Netflix marathon while you take a bubble bath. Buy an old school bottle of Mr. Bubbles ($3 at Target!) and really just soak. Relax. Light a candle.
Do something creative. You can read a book, write, blog, draw, code, anything. It just has to be something that speaks to your passion.
Track your progress. Just do this once a week so it doesnât become all-consuming. And remember that non-scale victories are just as important as shedding pounds.
Take the time to be grateful. Tell your friend how much you admire her taste in music. Mention to your mom how much you love her cooking and how happy you are that she takes care of you. Thank your teaching after an especially interesting lecture. When you do something awesome, take a moment to admire yourself. Be grateful for even the little things.
Anything I missed? Reblog + add yours! Donât forget to tag your progress!
starting this Monday!
Iâll just reblog and fav cause I need to read this in the morning!
Iâm gonna give it a try this Monday đ
I miss her so much

Residency is difficult.
Physically. Yes
Emotionally⌠well, itâs a disaster, Iâd say.
Because your experience is really limited and the patients are looking at you with high hopes and uncertainty.
I feel really drainedâŚ
I worry that one of the patients Iâve got wonât survive the weekend. But one shouldnât stop hoping, was it?
I felt the same and feel the same. It gets better. When your experience accumulates. Iâm still waiting for my experience to accumulate enough. The key is just..trying and knowing who and where to ask for help. But sometimes..I donât know even know where to begin. Those moments are less and less now. but they still come up to bite me occasionally. I used to think as a first year med student, that final year med students know so much. I got to final year, on the verge of graduating, knowing that there was still so much more to learn and to know. I get to residency and I realize that while student still see us as giants..you get there and realize why residency is residency. Why itâs further training. You learn fundamentals enough as a student to start being a resident. As a resident you actually learn how to be a doctor. The defining feature isnât so much knowledge as it is experience between a student and a doctor or resident. It felt like such a chasm at first.Â
It gets easier. I promise. When I started, I felt like a bit of a fraud. Well, you know that you graduated, but somehow that feels far from enough. Thereâs so much you donât know, and when you actually come down to it, suddenly you have a huge responsibility placed on you. What you do actually matters to peopleâs lives, and thatâs an immensely scary thing. So itâs actually entirely normal and healthy to be a bit petrified of it all. When I started, it felt really weird being addressed as âdoctorâ. Hey, it felt really weird to even wear a stethoscope; I almost felt not-worthy of wearing it, what if I was hearing everything wrong? It took a little while for me to have any confidence in my own clinical judgement, which is actually normal when you talk to other people in the same position. Imposter syndrome seems almost universal amongst doctors; I havenât met a junior who Iâve known well who hasnât secretly confided to me that they arenât sure they are good at being a doctor. Itâs really very weird being in our position at all. So allow yourself to accept that it is weird to be thrust into making life and death decisions whilst most people your age are spending their time partying and doing whatever they want. But slowly, you get used to it. You realise that although thereâs still a lot you donât know (which makes sense; how could you fit everything into med school?), you know enough. And you know when you need help. And youâll learn so much so fast, itâll slowly get to the point where it doesnât feel odd making decisions that change peopleâs lives. Thereâs no sudden point where you feel like a doctor along this long, gruelling process, and itâll probably be strewn with times of frustration, doubt and upset. Even when you are more senior, there will be times you will doubt yourself or make mistakes or think about leaving medicine. But one day youâll look back and realise that you do feel like a doctor. Perhaps a junior one, but a doctor all the same.Â
Growing up in an abusive household is a fucking trip dudeâŚâŚIf youâve never had someone angrily wash a dish at you or fold a sock in your direction then how are you gonna understand why I get nervous when you quietly do the laundry, or why I ask âare you mad at me?â when you set the bag of groceries down too hard? Itâs a totally different way of living and it impacts you long after youâve left the situation.
How to Write a University-level Essay
Heyo, so school is fast approaching, and seeing as Tumblr is made up of a lot of younger users who will soon be shipping off to college or university soon, I thought I would take it upon myself to help spread my knowledge of essay-writing. Essay-writing is my thing. I love it. I live for it. Itâs how I make up for my shitty test marks, and still get by with an 85 average+ in University classes. Iâm a historian by trade, so perhaps this information will seem a bit off from what youâre used to, but hopefully, Itâll help you out. If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me an ask.
1. Consider your question and find your thesis.
I know, I know. People always say, no! Never start with your thesis/intro paragraph! Go to the body!! Well iâm here to say forget everything youâve been told. Forget that, forget the stupid hamburger shit they teach you, forget it all and start reading.Â
I ALWAYS start with my thesis. Why? Because you cannot make good paragraphs without knowing what youâre researching. You need direction, and a thesis is your map.
So, the question weâll use shall be:Â What is one way in which the Union won the American Civil War?
Now remember, your thesis is your map. It shows you where to go, what to look for. The thesis is the heart and soul of all your work. You want a good, solid thesis. What does that include, you ask?
An idea
A reason for said idea
Evidence to support said reason, and thus validate the     idea.
So, lets do an example. Letâs say Iâm writing on the use of media during the American Civil War. I like photography, and wrote a paper on this in my second year, but im gonna be doing this example freehand(idk where I put that essay lol) so lets work with how I got an A+ on that paper. This will be my idea:
âPhotography during the American Civil War influenced the warâs outcome in the Norths favour.â
This is VERY vague. This is an example of a thesis in bloom! Letâs take it further. Look at the above. What questions would you have from this thesis?
-Who was taking photos at that time?
-Why did it influence the outcome?
-How did it influence the outcome?
-Who consumed photography as a media at that time?
This is where you STOP, and start the next step.
2. Research
Start your basic research with your idea, and the above questions in mind. Look at libraries, ask your professor or TA or librarian, or just do some basic google searches to get to know the subject(but for the love of god if you include a google link in your citation I will personally hunt you down and castrate you.)
I like to start with the basics of any inquiry: WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, HOW. Who was taking photos? Where were they displayed that caused influence? ectâŚThese, in relation to your beginner thesis, will help guide you in what form your thesis will take.
Once youâve finished that, and have a general feel for the time period, go back to your thesis.
3. THESIS 2.0
Go back to your original question:Â What is one way in which the Union won the American Civil War? Now look at your thesis again. Itâs too vague, isnât it?
As you can see, our original thesis was too vague to be a real thesis. So, we NARROW IT DOWN using our WWWWWH progress we focused on during early research!
âPhotography during the American Civil war influenced the warâs outcome by providing a visual for ordinary citizens about the horrors of war, and thus helping to increase donations and awareness to the cause.â
Great! But once again, too vague! Questions that may arise include:
Who was taking the photos
Evidence for donations?
Evidence for social awareness?
So, we NARROW IT DOWN again. Iâm going to use Andrew Gardnerâs photography during the Civil war, as he was one of the most famous and influential at the time.
âAndrew Gardnerâs photography during the American Civil war influenced the warâs outcome by providing a visual for ordinary citizens about the horrors of war, and thus helping to increase donations and enlistment in the Union through awareness to the causeâŚâ
The above then gives us the following(why and how are sometimes grouped together):
Who: Andrew Gardner
What: Photography helped the north win the war.
Where: Union-aka northern states
When: American Civil War
Why/How: Because Andrew Gardnerâs photography raised social awareness through this new and budding medium
Use this sort of outline to guide you in the next step!
4. Now that we have a thesis, you need to do some more research and evidence gathering.
The way I like to do this is to go check out a few books from the library(look for text books in particular), and leaf through the index for matching terms. Our matching terms would be:
Photography, civil war, Andrew Gardner, media
From there, you read over the pages, and see if any of the info relates to your subjects. Copy down quotes, page numbers, book title, author, publishing date and publisher. You need these for your bibliography. Pick and choose relevant information. The filter for relevant information relies entirely on your thesis, because it decides what you need to be looking forâthis is why I hate when people tell me to start writing paragraphs before I write a thesis! Itâs simply impossible and counter productive, and will cost you hours in revision.
So, gather your information from the library, and cross-reference with peer-reviewed articles and data. For our thesis, we would need data on enlistment numbers in an area after a date of Andrew Gardnerâs photography exhibit showcases. No matter what type of essay youâre writing, you can always back up your evidence with data, and it wonât hurt one bit. Donât be afraid of the numbers, kids!
So, if we were to go back to our thesis, we could now expand on it like this:
âAndrew Gardnerâs photography during the American Civil war influenced the warâs outcome by providing a visual for ordinary citizens about the horrors of war, and thus helping to increase donations and enlistment in the Union through awareness to the cause. An increase in  donations and enlistment in relation to exposure to Gardners work is seen in data/evidence point A, as well as in data/evidence point B, which will be fully outlined in the points below.â
This gives you an example of how to lead from a thesis, to your opening paragraph.
5. Data and Evidence JustificationsâParagraph making
This is the section where you can branch your essay into your data and evidence points you gathered in steps 2 and 4. You can have as many paragraphs as you like, just make sure your evidence and data is strong and supported. I personally like to work with my thesis copied and pasted onto the top of every page I write on. This keeps you on track, with your clear goal in mind, and will help you from straying. I will give you an example of how a paragraph might sound.
Andrew Gardnerâs photography during the American Civil War became heavily influential upon the American population at the time, particularly the north, wherein which his work was showcased. The influence of Gardnerâs photographic works is seen in the _____, which shows us that without the influence of Gardnerâs media influence, war efforts and awareness may not have been as successful as they had been.
This is an alright opener for you to work with. The ___ is where you could put in your data point or evidence piece. The point of the paragraph is to show your support for your thesis by confirming it with evidence.
Your paragraphs should take this form:
Present, Confirm, Conclude, Lead.
You present your evidence, confirm its relation to the thesis and confirm the validity of the thesis, conclude by brief revision of evidence, and then lead into your next paragraph.Â
6. Conclusion
Your conclusionary paragraph should be a look-over of the above paragraphs. Restate your thesis, present a summarized version of your paragraphs(one or two sentences only), and perhaps take the time to look at your own views on the subject. An example might look like this:
âTaking a moment to step away from the above mentioned evidence, I believe it to be scholarly acceptable and even necessary to state my own views on the subject presented. In drawing conclusions, I felt that the above information was correct in that it presented a reality of the time period, in which photography was becoming a medium to be embraced by popular society. People were not only astounded by Gardnerâs photographs on a social level, but also a technical level. The astonishment people held at seeing the war-torn battle fields spurred them into action, and even today can still present feelings of dread, fear and loss when looking at his photosâŚblah blah blahâ
Why is it scholarly acceptable and perhaps necessary to state your views? Oftentimes, it is to reassure the reader of your own personal biasâ, which exist whether you like them or not, to the subject at hand. Having a small tidbit on your own thoughts about your research ect, breaking away from the third-person droning of an essay can be refreshing and welcoming for a prof at the end of his stack of essay reading.Â

All in all, do unique things. Professors love it when they come across something thatâs not cookie cutter! Even if they present you with a list of essay topics, take the leap and ask them if you can do your own research topic!! Take risks with your essay writing, talk to your professors about what you want to do, and try to have fun with your research. Iâve written on everything from civil war photography to Disney princesses in american media, to the religious formation of idea of heaven and earth. Remember, so long as thereâs credible, documented evidence, itâs possible to write about it.

Look. at. those. words.Â

Fight. Fail. Fight again. Good luck on your finals for all of you who are still taking them!
"College as explained to me in high school" vs. "College as experienced firsthand"
In high school they told us: There will be no grades in a class except the midterm and the final, so you have to study hard because failing one test means you fail the class.
Once I was in college a professor said: Hey, you guys are working really hard on your third paper, so I'm just going to cancel the final and give everyone a hundred on it.
In high school they told us: In college, class always begins exactly at the scheduled start time. If your class is at 9 AM and you get there at 9:01, the doors will be locked and you'll be out of luck, especially if it's the day of the midterm or final, because then you get a zero.
Once I was in college a professor said: Does anyone mind if I start class at 3:35 instead of 3:30? These elevators are really slow and I want to have time for a cigarette before I teach for 90 minutes.
In high school they told us: Every class you miss drops you a full letter grade in college courses.
Once I was in college almost every professor said: You can miss three classes without a penalty, and a few more if you have a Doctor's note. Sorry to be a hardass, but you automatically fail if you miss more than ten days of class.
In high school they told us: If you do have papers, your professors just lecture and put the assignments on the syllabus. You're completely responsible for remembering the deadlines, they won't remind you. All your professors will do is lecture and the rest is up to you.
Once I was in college a professor said: Okay, so your next paper is in two weeks! I'll keep reminding you in the interim, but I just want to make sure you have enough time to do it! Let's run through the structure I want to see real quick, and if you have any questions, feel free to email me or come to my office hours!
In high school they told us: You have to use MLA formatting and if you make any mistakes in your citations, it'll be considered plagiarism. You'll be expelled and probably sued.
Once I was in college almost every professor said: Please do not use MLA, it is awful, we use either APA or Chicago here because we are not 14 years old.
In high school they told me: There is no excuse for an absence. NONE.
In college I called a professor and said: I'm really, really, really sorry but it's -18 before windchill and I have to walk two miles to get to class.
The professor said: You stay inside and stay safe. Here's what we're reading today. I'll quiz you next week and if you can get a 90% I'll mark you present. I know you live off-campus, do you have food?
In high school they told me: Your advisor is just for academia, not personal problems.
In college my advisor called me: Are you okay? I haven't seen you in class in two weeks and I know you have depression. I can drop off your work if you'd like. Please call me and tell me how you're doing even if you can't get to class.
In high school they told me: Don't argue. You think this is bad, wait til college.
In college all but one of my professors said: You wanna argue, do it in a civil manner. We didn't get here today without 5000 years of healthy debate.
In Addition:
In high school they told me: You need to exceed all of your peers to get your teacher's attention and MAYBE they'll give you a good reference with a network.
Most of my college teachers: Hey, you're fucking funny, I like you, you say intelligent things sometimes, and some dumb shit but you're here to learn and if you need a recommendation, come to me and I'll help out.
High School: Forced the quiet kids to talk
College: You're quiet... give me a good amount of thought in your papers and tests and your participation points will be counted.
High School: Don't ask questions, just listen and do the readings and you'll be fine!
College: ASK QUESTIONS YOU QUIET CRICKETS!!! Seriously, how in the hell am I supposed to know you understand me? I know you all don't get this shit, it's hard so ask questions!
