hello! there is a lot of scholarship on this subject that ranges from prehistoric societies to the present day in communities where orality is still the primary method of recording information. personally i am most familiar with scholarship on weaving and orality in prehistoric europe and asia, as well as in ireland and the irish community of eastern canada (esp cape breton) between the ~1700s-1900s. however there is an increasing amount of writing on this subject about sub-saharan africa and indigenous communities of the americas. here are a few papers i have saved that could help with further research:
