Say what you want about Robert Jordan's writing method, it did create rock-solid characters. I think that, if anything, the plot sometimes gets subsumed by the characters, but never the other way around. If he had a plot thing he wanted to happen, he would sometimes ensure that the correct character was around to make it happen. He would never have a character alter their behavior to satisfy the plot, though. His characters are full and complex and diverse and I love all of them.

the most fascinating thing for me in all of this has been realizing how many people think wheel of time is a tragedy or even a story where tragic things regularly happen to good and just people.
to me it is *so clearly* a story of hope and of agency. isn’t that the whole point of veins of gold? of egwene’s desperate last act to reverse balefire and save the world? of moiraine tackling lanfear through a doorway with only a chance of rescue, despite knowing if not rescued she will suffer eternal torment? of perrin and faile outnumbered by trollocks in the two rivers but fighting anyway? of nynaeve getting malkier to follow lan? of siuan finding a way to move forward after her entire life until now is taken from her? of verin using every ounce of her cunning to help the light even when bound to the dark? of mat entering a tower to do what he knows to be impossible? of morgase waving that tiny flag?
people suffer. they sacrifice. but the whole point in my mind is that things do not idly happen to us. we *always* can do something. even the dragon reborn, a figure of prophecy, charts his own path.

I think one of the things that always enchanted me when reading the Wheel of Time is the continual inclusion of folk stories. The characters relate their own experiences to those of the heroes they learned about growing up and gleeman compose epics from legends. Even across cultures the characters will have heard the same stories and will use them to communicate with each other. There’s just so much depth to the world and how the people use stories to understand it.
the beauty of wheel of time is that sometimes the book just outright tells you stuff way before it is officially "revealed"

i still haven't finished the first three episodes because while i was watching and taking my silly little notes i realised i'm just not having fun and my liveblog is turning out pretty mean. i really tried to like the show but i simply don't. so i guess i'm done here, except i will watch episode 4 because rhuidean chapters are among the best in the entire book series and i'm curious what the show did with them
