need this to go with my "expensive and difficult" trucker hat
like i don't know i hate what it feels like to write a post that is like 'being sick is dumb and these ways it forecloses my desire for life are dumb'. what a stupid thing, to complain about a life as privileged as mine (cared for, safe, etc). people are out there doing so much more with so much less; am i just uniquely bad at being alive; what kind of an asshole do you have to be to say 'am i just uniquely bad at being alive'; etc. and then of course it is always the same. so it feels very stupid to complain. also whom or what am i complaining to? the feeling IT COULD BE BETTER is trying register the fact of unfairness with a higher authority of some kind. there is no higher authority. and fairness is a playground concept. so as well as feeling that way it also simply is very stupid to complain.
but then i am always really grateful to have the archive later on when i am like 'what was it like i should have written it down oh wait look i did.' so regrettably the posting will continue. thank you that i crashed my car into your house
nothing like preparing for an extremely simple trip to a perfectly familiar and not at all far away place to remind you of how completely fucked your body and brain are

Reblog this and tell me what was your biggest crying over a piece of fiction. You can be vague if you don't want to spoil.
hello! it was a lovely surprise to see you pop back up on my dash, welcome back! I took your recommendation and started MIO - you are absolutely correct, it's gorgeous and I'm loving it. In the meantime, I'd love to hear your thoughts on Silksong as I thought of you often while I was playing it (and I also loved the hell out of it)
yesss i am so glad you are playing mio! i love a game where everything feels like a secret, including the critical path... it also really nails a very challenging tone, which is a perfect injection of humor, or not just humor but specifically silliness, into pervasive and deeply-felt melancholy. and some boss! design! and the thing about the MAP (no spoilers). ahh. game. i didn't actually finish it; i got right up to the end and couldn't make myself go through with the last steps. so waiting til it's been long enough to replay from the start...
as for silksong. god. i have too much to say about silksong. a lot about 'difficulty' discourse; a lot about the personality of hornet; a lot about the real importance of little guys; a lot about intertextuality with the corpus of from software. a lot about SHERMA and also SNAILS. but maybe the most important thing to begin with is to express my great respect for team cherry for really challenging themselves to ask, what one ingredient is crucially missing from the sauce of our challenging platformer about maintaining hope for a future in the face of inevitable apocalypse? what feature could be robust and meaningful enough to form the gravitational center of our themes and mechanics? what will elevate this game to true greatness, and secure its place in the canon forevermore? and for finding the truest and most correct answer, which was: minigames.

“Freak Out Girl” ⟳ Hannah Epstein ⌇ Rug-hooked comic strip
on grueling walk home from latest in endless series of pointless medical theatre appointments, a little miracle: a raindrop on my cheek. it surprised me so much i stopped and stared at the sky. i sat down on the stoop to rest before attempting the stairs. another scattering; can't call it rain exactly. but water fell from the sky, a very little bit of it, on my face and my arms. maybe one day it will happen again.
muscle memory is so beautiful to me. my body remembered better than i did. yet we're the same thing, with the same memory.
@proudheron asked me to say more about crusader kings 3, and i am very excited to do that. so here is more about crusader kings 3. i played it first in the fall, but i have been thinking about it a lot because last week i picked up civilization 6 for a few quid, thinking it would be at least a diverting few hours of clicking on things. which i guess it kind of was. but my god, what a completely and utterly sauceless game. what a meaningless mélange of nothing. its sole interest or provocation was to make me wish i was instead playing crusader kings 3. so let's do it! let's think about crusader kings 3!
i was only dimly aware of crusader kings 3 until i caught a little bit of the friends at the table let's play of it which despite some childishness in the way of anglophones joking about european place names is very enjoyable and recommendable, and which i bring up mainly because it really captures the best thing about the game, which is how very funny the little stories that emerge from its mechanics can become, especially if you play alongside someone who has the right disposition for such things.
now, i've never been much of a grand strategy guy. the power fantasy of map-painting holds no appeal for me, nor does the abstraction of civilizational teleology. but as it turns out, crusader kings is only a little bit about those things, and only if you decide to make it about those things. the real appeal of crusader kings is in basically two things: one, it is a grand strategy game taken through the tight lens of an rpg, and two, almost all of its flavor and character come from the agglomeration of simple tags that are assigned to characters semi-randomly with only partial influence from the player. it is a game primarily about people and relationships, but not in the conventional way a character-driven rpg is; there is no psychological depth or relational complexity here. it is a pure interaction of systems, which are happy enough to expose themselves as systems, with only a thin narrative gloss. but the systems are so complex and so well-painted that something like a wholly unique narrative genre comes into being through them.
and then of course it is a game centrally and irreducibly about political power, and specifically about the intrinsic violence of the very concept of territorial sovereignty. while you are being borne along by the current of peculiar little systemic interactions that endlessly generate funny little stories, you are also being constantly reminded that trying to wield any amount of temporal power will lead you to commit unutterable crimes, and in the end, inevitably, utterly destroy you, body and soul.
take a game that gf and i played together in the fall:
is a leaf blower actually that much more efficient than a rake or broom. is a chainsaw actually that much more efficient than a machete. it's warm and bright and there are Machines being Operated right outside my windows and i just do not think this much power is required for hedge pruning or path clearing
