Chapter 2: One Last Night
Max Hatter x Benâs Younger Sister! Reader
Max and I continue walking out of the garden as we approach the courtyard and see the rest of my friends gathered there.
I stop quickly before anyone notices us as I lean into Max, âthank you, Iâm sorry I got my tears on you.â
Max squeezed my hand once again as he wiped a tear off of my cheek with his thumb, âyouâre welcome, itâs alright. I told you I was a shoulder for you to cry on for a reason.â
As I felt Maxâs thumb leave my cheek I saw Pink running towards me out of my peripheral vision. I stepped away from Max to open my arms towards her.
Pink ran into me, giving me a hug as she whispers âIâm so sorryâ into my ear.
I give Pink a squeeze as I step back, âthank you, Pink, that means a lot to me.â
From behind Max, I see Felix step out from behind him, looking like heâs trying to stay strong, âI donât know how us VKâs are supposed to do this without him and Mal, but I know if there is someone who can only make it better, it will be you.â
I smile as I look at my friends around me, forever grateful for how quickly we had all started to get along, âthank you, all of you. I donât know what Iâd do without you guys. Group hug?â
Everyone gathers in a hug around me, Max to my left and Pink to my right, as I hear other students in the courtyard start to whisper and point at me.
With no urge from anyone else, Red turns around and snaps at them for me, âShe just lost her brother. Stop talking about her.â
I smile at her as Red leans back into the hug as I mouth âthank youâ to her and she blows a kiss back to me.
As we are leaning all together one of the royal advisors approaches our group and is mid-bow when I turn around, âYour HighnessâŚâ
I sigh as I look at him and realize thatâs how people are going to be addressing me from now on, âyes?â
âTheir majesties are here waiting for you at the door,â he said pointing up to the steps where my mom and dad are standing.
âOh, okay, thank you.â I say as I back out from the hug as I look at my friends, âI guess duty calls. Iâll see you all soon?â
I see all of them nod as Max gives my hand one more squeeze as I step away towards the stairs leading into the school.
As Iâm walking, I see more people staring, but also feel my friends following behind meâŚ.I knew they couldnât stay away for too long.
âHi mom, hi dad,â I say as I approach them outside, they both greet me with a hug as one of the new guards for us opens the door into the hallway.
As we walk in, my fellow students stop talking. The teachers in the hallway stop talking as well. They are all looking at my parents and I⌠and Iâve never felt so small.
One thing I wasnât prepared for was my classmates and teachers bowing at me. My parents nudged me to continue walking, but I realized I wasnât just their friend anymore. I am about to be their queen.
We started to walk down the hallway and one of the first things I noticed was Benâs old locker. No one had used it since they declared it âthe Kingâs locker.â Except now, there were flowers all around itâŚand notesâŚ
I put in his combination to his locker, the date of his birthday always the combination to any lock, and open to reveal a bunch of his old classwork and his journal. I grab it and hold it out to mom, âhere, I remember us getting him this journal, you should keep it.â
Mom looked at me with a sad smile and pushed it back towards me, âno, you should keep it. Maybe it will help you feel more connected to him with the upcoming days.â
I nod as I hold it tighter to my chest, nodding, as I look inside and at the journal, âitâs so dusty.â
Dad laughed as he glanced inside too, âwell, Iâll be honest, I donât think he ever truly opened his locker all that much. He was much more of a fan of just carrying everything around.â
For the first time since the news, both of my parents laughed. A genuine laugh. As painful as it was, it was nice to hear.
âY/N, my darling, we will need to have you move back into the castle. Your brother didnât live in a dorm when he was King either.â My mom told me as I closed his locker, a few other things of his in my arms.
I looked at her as I felt my eyes well up with tears, âcan I at least have a dorm to keep some stuff in? Pink doesnât deserve to lose her roommate, and at least it would be someplace I can go to do my homework and take a breath if I need it.â
My mom and dad looked at each other and had another conversation with their eyes before my dad turned to me and nodded, âyes, I suppose that would be acceptable, but after tonight you will be sleeping at home from now on okay? Any of your friends can stay whenever they want, but we need you in the castle walls. I would prefer to have you there tonightâŚbut I know you obviously werenât expecting this, and I know the girls will take care of you.â
I gave him a hug as I thank him and give them each a kiss on the cheek, âokay, I love you both so much. Iâll see you tomorrow.â
I wave bye to them as I head to my dorm, to drop the things from Benâs locker. I canât believe I have one more night here, maybe Iâll be able to convince them to let me sleep here a few nights.
As I open the door to my dorm I see all of my friends sitting in there already waiting for me, âsoâŚum, thereâs no easy way to say this but-â
âWe know youâre not able to stay here anymore!â Pink interrupted, putting a hand over her mouth after her outburst, âI saw Belle, I was downstairs and she told me.â
I breathed as I at least felt better that they all already knew, âso we just need to make this the best last sleepover ever! Everyone be back in 20?â
A chorus of âoh yeah!â came as they all got up and started towards the door as Pink yelled out to them, âbring a pillowâŚand a blanket!â
I giggled as I heard grumbles from Hazel as I started to grab my pajamas. They were a gift from Ben actually, they were red pajama pants and a white t-shirt with a rose on itâŚBen knew how much I loved our parents story.
Pink got her pajamas on too, and just as we were setting up a blanket and pillow fort our door burst open with the group coming in, Hazel bringing a pillow and blanket despite her grumbling.
âYay! Sleepover!â Pink celebrates as she throws her arms around her sister, as everyone throws their stuff down on our floor, âY/N, are you going to join on the floor, or are you gonna sleep in the bed?â
âIâm going to join you guys on the floor, I can keep my dorm and keep some of my stuff in here so I can come in here and take a nap anytime I want, but I want one last floor sleepover with my best friends,â I said as I threw my pillow and blanket on the ground as well. âGuys, no your highness, no serious business, tonight Iâm not a princess, Iâm just me.â Thankfully, everyone agreed with my request.
âWe should play charades! Thatâs what we did our first sleepover when we all became friends,â Chloe mentioned, for old times sake, a few grumbles, but some (mainly the Smees and Pink) nodding enthusiastically.
âOkay gang, letâs do our usual of girls versus guys!â Pink said as we split in half on opposite sides of the room, âladies first,â Pink told Felix as she lightly shoved him back towards the guyâs side, I noticed Felixâs blush, but I decided to stay quietâŚfor now.
As the game of charades continues, I canât help but feel an overwhelming sense love for the group of weirdos around me, as Max nudged me in the side.
âYou having fun, Princess?â Max whispered in my ear, as I turn to face him, our faces closer together than I thought they would be.
âYes, I am, itâs a good ending to an awful day,â I tell Max as I let out a laugh, watching Felix try to mimic the dodo birds that chased after us.
As I watch the charades go on, I feel Hazel step behind me and start to braid my hair, âplaying hairdresser tonight are you?â
Hazel laughed at my comment as I felt her using her hook to part my hair and section it off, âIâm rubbing off on you, the sarcasm, Iâm so proud, but yes your hair is a mess.â
I roll my eyes, as I hand her my hair tie, âoh gee, thanks.â
Hazel laughed as she grabbed my hair tie with her hook, âsomeone has to keep you in check and be honest with you, your highness.â
I feel Max laugh next to me as Hazel finished the braid with my hair tie, and puts a small bag of chips over my shoulder, âyou need to eat. I don't care if you're not hungry.â
I smile at her as I open the bag, âthanks Hook, I appreciate it. Are any of you tired? I, personally, have had a very long day.â
Many people nod at me, as we all pile onto our floor covered with everyoneâs pillows and blankets, âgoodnight, I love you guys,â I say as I pull my blanket up to my chin.
Pink was on one side of me and Max was on the other, but Pink grabbed my hand and squeezed it, âone last night with the best roomie, ever.â
Everyone around me started to drift off to sleep, and I was only one who couldnât quite get comfy. I kept tossing and turning as I tried to get comfortable on the floor.
Unable to do so, I got up, thinking a walk might help as I stepped out the door and snuck down to the gardens outside of the dorm, not realizing that I woke up a certain someone when the door shut.
I get to the flowers and take a whiff of the night air mixed with the scent of the roses. It was always so peaceful out here at night. I stand in the middle of the hedges and cross my arms from the chilly breeze.
I hear a snap behind me, and instantly know that itâs Max stepping on a twig. Next thing I knew, he was beside me, âcouldnât sleep?â
I glance at him as I look at the fireflies blinking around us, âno, too much on my mind.â
âYeah, I can understand that. It must be a lot,â Max tells me honestly, as I feel part of the braid Hazel did start to loosen around my face.
âIt is, my whole life and family has changed in the last sixteen hours. I canât even comprehend how this has all happened. I realized that tonight I can see the castle from my dorm room, and tomorrow Iâll be seeing my old dorm from the castle window.â I say as I turned to face him.
We are both smiling, when all of a sudden I feel Max reach up and brush a loose strand of hair away from my face that has already fell out of the braid, and keeps his hand where he pushed it back.
For the first time, honestly since Wonderland, I feel myself be brave as we both quietly let out a breath and start to lean into each other. I stop inches away from him, as I glance down at his lips, when I tilt my head towards him.
Max and I jump apart from each other as we see a royal guard stand at the entrance to the rose garden.
The guard immediately freezes as he realizes what was just about to happen in front of him and he straightens and says, âIâŚumâŚapologize for interrupting your highness.â
I quickly shake my head and pat him on the shoulder, âno, no. You didnât interrupt anything.â
He nodded at me, as he points back inside, âyour parents will not be thrilled if I tell them I found you out here, I trust, Mr. Hatter, that youâll make sure she is safe and sound back at her dorm?â
I look over at Max as he gives a comical salute and gives a fake bow to me as he grabs my hand to lead me inside. I appreciate the guard letting us go back by ourselves but now the only thing I can think about is how we almost kissed and how he was looking at me when we almost did so.
When we got to my dorm door, we stopped. Max is about to open the door for us, but he just looked at me, as if he wanted to say something, but before I knew it, the door flung open and Red was there, âwe thought you vanished, guys theyâre both here! It is sunrise!â She said to everyone inside. It getting comically quieter as the three of us step inside my dorm.
I do not want to know how long I was not able to sleepâŚ.all night apparently, âwell Iâm sorry to end our sleepover in chaos, I just needed some air.â
Chloe came up to me and gave me a side hug, âitâs okay, none of us know how youâre feeling right now. You do what you need, and we will be here to support you.â
I smile at Chloe as I give her a full on hug, âthank you,â I whisper into her shoulder, looking at the boxes I have to pack by midday today now, âI donât know what to pack with me and what to keep here.â
Robbie looks at me and shrugs, âsome school stuff, some clothes, keep some of those things here.â
I laugh at his very simple choices, but canât help but agree with him, âthanks, Robbie.â
He smiled at me as he starts to gather his pillow and blanket, many of the others following suit, âokay, I guess I have to actually start, see you all later? I donât think Iâm going to join for breakfast, I need to get this ready.â
Felix nodded as he pat my shoulder, âsee you later then?â
I smile and nod at him, âfor sure, you canât get rid of me.â
Everyone starts going towards the door, Pink included as sheâs walking with Red for some breakfast when Max stops and turns towards me in the doorway, âyou said earlier that they would be here around ten with the carriage right?â He asked as I nodded, âokay, Iâll meet you back up here then. Iâll help carry whatever boxes you have.â
I grab his hand as he turns away from me, âyou donât have to help if you donât want to.â
Max smiled at me as he pulled my hand and kissed the back of it, making my face burn, âI know. Iâll see you in a bit.â
I try to control my face as I see him smirk and turn around trying to catch up with the others, and as he rounds the corner I shut my dorm door and sigh at the now empty floor of missing pillows and blankets, missing out on the stares of any students up early watching the must unexpected group to be sneaking back to their rooms in their pjâs with pillows and blankets.
I open one box and start packing the basic things, my pillow, blanket, toothbrush, a lot of my clothes, and my school supplies. I pack Benâs journal and the stuff I gathered from his locker along with a photo of him and I that I had on my half of the room. I pick up the photo of my friend group and put that on the top of one of the boxes with the one where Ben and Iâs was. I grab the glass rose my mom gave me, and put the boxes in front of my bed.
Ten came, and I got a knock on the doors from some of the guards of Auradon ready to move my boxes to the carriage, âdo you have everything you need for right now, your highness?
I look at the boxes, and around the room, not seeing anything that Iâll need immediately, âI think this is everything.â I nod at them as they all bow and grab my boxes, Max holding the door for him as he looks at the more empty half of my room.
I see Max hold up one of my older stuffed animals, my elephant, towards me as I reach for it, and he grins at me, that half-smirk he knows catches my attention.
âThe future queen sleeps with a stuffed elephant?â Max asks, pointing at it in my hands.
As I shake my head no, he just stares at me and cocks his head, ââŚmaybeâŚsometimes.
I catch him smiling as he sees me put my elephant in my book bag, ready to go downstairs, âthen it definitely belongs in the castle with you.â
âWell, Iâm supposed to be down at the carriage, so Iâll see you soon?â I ask him as I shut the door to my dorm, feeling sad.
Max grabbed my bag from me as I turned to look at him as he shrugged, âIâm not letting you walk out of here alone, Princess.â
As we get outside and get closer to the carriage I find myself keep glancing back to the building behind me, Max pausing every single time I stop.
I see mom and dad as I grab my bag from him and he gives my hand one more squeeze, putting something in my palm.
It was a dried rose from the bush that Ben and I planted, âyou picked this?â I asked him.
Max nodded as I shook my head in disbelief, âso you stole a flower?â
Max paused as he considered how to answer me before giving my shoulder a slight shove and sending me a wink my way, âdonât tell the queen, I heard she can be mean.â
I step into the carriage, across from my parents as it starts to move. I see Max alongside of it, walking beside the carriage, âsee you tonight?â
Max smiles as he gives his little wave to me, pausing his steps, âsee you at the castle, Princess.â
I smile at him, as I see my parents smiling at me too, âdonât be late.â
