Max Tohline, Unrealized Art Ideas, 2011-2015
As I was cleaning out an old box where I throw scraps of paper outlining stuff that I plan to work on later, I found a bunch of unrealized art ideas that I jotted down over the past few years. They range from the monumental (a plan for a Turbine Hall installation/gallery space) to the humble (food sculpting at a restaurant), from the snarky (install a water fountain in the place of a urinal in the men’s room at an art museum) to the profound (a map of a highway on a gallery floor lined with objects collected from the roadside, placed where they were found), and more. None of these will ever be made, most likely, but they at least amuse me.
I’d still love to spend a night in that 12-story bunk bed.
I would love to see all these become real.
This extravagant home has a weaponry room, a dovecote, a wizard’s tower, and an appraised value of more than $2,000 per square inch—all good hints that it’s not a traditional abode but a 9-foot-tall miniature called the Astolat Dollhouse Castle. Built by the artist Elaine Diehl around 1980 and decorated with 10,000 teeny-tiny items, the $8.5 million dollhouse is the world's most expensive and will be on display from Thursday through Dec. 8 at the Shops at Columbus Circle, in Manhattan’s Time Warner Center.

A new software initiative will enable Android smartphones to be used for large-scale medical research projects. Apple did that for iPhones earlier this year.
“Since Apple introduced its ResearchKit software in March, scientists at leading medical schools across the country have written apps to study asthma, Parkinson’s disease, autism, epilepsy, melanoma, breast cancer and other ailments.”
“The Apple move was a breakthrough, but a gap remained. “You can’t just do research studies on people who can afford iPhones,” said Deborah Estrin, a professor of computer science at Cornell Tech in New York.”

“In households without regular computer or Internet access, she added, some teenagers resort to doing their homework on smartphones.
“Just 51 percent of lower-income teens have their own smartphones compared to 78 percent of higher-income teens.“There’s a really big difference between trying to type an essay for school — or do research on the Internet — on a smartphone or using a computer,” Ms. Rideout, the director of VJR Consulting, a research and policy firm that works with nonprofit groups, said in a phone interview. “We need to make sure that technology does not exacerbate the disparities between the haves and the have-nots, instead of ameliorating them.””
