global north academics just do not want to discuss the privileges of passports. i can bring it up and there will be total silence and then a change of topic.Â
@itsafckingsnickersbar Hi! Thank you for the opportunity for me to rant about one of my favourite thins to rant about, lol. So, the thing about passports and citizenship is that it (i) determines who can study what, how, where, and when â and who cannot do specific things. For example: a lot of South Asian scholars without global north passports cannot do archival research on South Asian histories because a lot of archives are located (colonialism, ahem) in the UK.
(ii) So then when scholarship by South Asian scholars is evaluated through peer review by global north scholars, this is always pointed out as a lack or gap â when there are very real structural reasons why global south scholars canât use particular sources (archives) and canât use particular methods (historical).
(iii) If you donât have a global north passport, then you spend a lot of time, energy, money on visa applications, including going to consulates or having to be in your country of origin to apply for specific visas. Thatâs time, energy, money that you canât spend on research or teaching.
(iv) Citizenship rules govern which fellowships different scholars (including graduate students) are eligible for or not, and how many hours of you can work as, for example, a teaching assistant or research assistant.
(v) If youâre on a visa then you have a very specific time in that particular country which means that, for example, if youâre an anthropologist, you canât do as extensive ethnographic work as scholars with global north passports.
(vi) If a scholar with an American passport wants to study a phenomenon in Pakistan, there is no structural issues of access â but if a scholar with a Pakistani passport wants to study a phenomenon in the France or Spain, that choice might not be possible. So your entire project of research might be determined by what passport you hold.
(vii) Global north universities very rarely offer visa sponsorship for global south scholars, and very rarely offer enough funding (like honoraria) to cover international flights. So if conferences arenât hosted online or in a country global south scholars can visit, then they are effectively shut out of transnational scholarly dialogue and presentation.
(viii) Historically, the global south has been where global north scholars go to do their fieldwork (anthropology wouldnât exist as a discipline without colonialism) (there are wonderful anti colonial anthropologists but thatâs precisely because they know the histories of their discipline) or use as a case study (yes, I mean you, political science) instead of a place where not only do fellow scholars exist but as a place that you can theorize from. For example: theorizing the enduring legacies of the cold war from South Korea and Pakistan and Argentina, instead of centering the continental settler US. Â So, in terms of the ethics of knowledge production, I think we need to understand who/where/what becomes an object of study â & passports are part of the structures (including empires) that make these frameworks and relations of study possible and perpetuated (the geopolitics of knowledge, as it were).

whenever you read a paragraph with new content, close the book/look away and ask yourself: âwhat have i just learned?â explaining the concept to yourself right away and asking follow-up questions will change the way you retain new material forever. trust me.
anyone heading back to school in the US to live on a college campus for the fall semester should uhhhhhhhhhhhh pack light and have a plan to get the hell out of dodge at a momentâs notice
this sounds jokey but iâm dead serious. if you plan on living on a college campus this fall please know that there is no amount of cleaning or âdistancingâ will keep COVID out of the school. these schools know that they are risking your life and the lives of their faculty by bringing people back on campus but they want your money more than they care if you live.Â
think about how unventilated dorm rooms are. think about how you somehow have a cold for 4 months straight at school. think about how fast the flu moves through a dorm. think about how foolish people act at when theyâre drunk with friends. all it takes is one get together where 5 people remove their masks to play kings cup and the whole school is fucked.Â
you need a plan now. you need to pack light so you can leave quickly if necessary. you need to work out now how you will get home the event you are sent home and need to be off campus immediately. if by some miracle youâre still there by october you can cross that bridge when you come to it. but you need to make a plan now.
in conclusion students:
read your emails. especially now, when thereâs no other form of communication with your professors (face to face).
donât ignore the reminder emails that they send every week, and if theyâre really nice, notifications of when you miss your assignments.Â
read any and every email thoroughly for information about deadlines, instructions for assignments, heads up for grades. itâs not a good excuse to not be âtech savvyâ. your professors are there to help, and you should be banging down their doors for assistance if you need it. donât just sit there and say âyou donât know!â
and donât lie to your professorsâŚ..itâs not becoming.

Hello, lovelies! Iâve gotten a couple of asks about studying so I decided to condense them into one post for you guys! Iâm trying to hit a bunch of different topics so if you need an even more specific post you can send an ask! Without any further ado, have some tips! My studyblr is @spacey-scholarâ
Prep
First, you always need a good base for your day! Especially if youâre studying a lot.
Make a good full breakfast! Ex. Eggs and Toast, Smoothie and fruit, Pancakes and a cup of juice.Â
Howâs your hygiene? Do you need to shower, brush your teeth, wash your face, condition your hair? Do it! Youâll be distracted if you feel messy!
Get dressed like itâs a normal day. Staying in PJâs is okay! But being ready for the day seriously helps focus!
Likewise, your space should be clean. A clean space is a clean mind! Remove dishes, trash, scrap paper, and extra items. Wide down your desk, organize your pens and books. Your space should feel like your space!
Now make a list of what you need to get done! What needs to be done Now, what needs to be done Soon, and what needs to be done Later?Â
Order your list how you want your day to go, and donât put super-tough subjects back to back, or subjects that are similar exercises i.e. reading thirty pages of two different books back to back is no fun.
The Studying
Itâs important to buckle down with No Distractions! If you find yourself distracted put your phone away! If you need your phone, put it on Do Not Disturb until youâre done. I also do this at night for better sleep.Â
Pick the best technique for you, Pomodoro, reward-based, group studying, etc.
Play music but only if it will not distract you! If you sing along or daydream itâs the wrong music! Classical, Lo-fi, and White noise are all good! My Spotify Here has some good ones.
Use a nice journal (I donât mean expensive!) and pens/pencils you enjoy using. I like to have a specific journal and color dedicated to each subject.Â
Take notes on recorded lectures and classes, if youâre doing online classes right now try to screen record or record the audio! That way if you space out you can play it later and take notes, and you can absorb the lesson better instead of being distracted.
Donât worry about your notes, stationary, pictures, being beautiful and your grades being perfect. Life doesnât always look the way it does on Instagram. And the people who spend hours trying to get a good photo of their coffee are not studying!Â
Use flashcards! Quizlet is good if you need premade ones! If you can save up and buy them, Barrons AP Flash Cards are the best in my opinion. Very clean, not too long, very durable, and cover all subjects.
Feeling DistractedÂ
If you catch yourself drifting off and getting into your head, get up and take a quick walk, stretch, or energizer.Â
Itâs okay if this happens, donât guilt yourself! practice affirmation. The best and smartest still get distracted.Â
If you are drifting, why? Are you hungry? Tired? Thirsty? Bored? Get a snack and some water, take a break and rest, find a way to make your studying more enjoyable.Â
Remember that Motivation and Discipline are different things. Sometimes we just wonât be motivated, we wonât want to do it and it will be rather frustrating. But the cure to this is not shaming its discipline. Remind yourself âThis may be hard, and I may not want to do this, but I want to reach my goals and If this is what It takes I will make it happen.Â
Always do just one more page of youâre tired. One at a time and oh you did it! Maybe just one more? One more? Eh, one more just to finish the train of thought, Oh just- Iâm done? Nice!
If you really canât focus just move on and come back to this subject, you can always ask for help.
Supplementary Things
There are so many apps you can use to study, for free! My favorites are Tide, Quizlet, Focus Keeper, Forest, Flora, Egenda, SpanishDict, Photomath, and Kahn Academy.Â
You can also join a study group! You may know one, but if you donât, there are a lot of online ones! Iâm in a study Discord and have been for a while! it helps a lot and motivates me to finish my work!
You can make a studyblr, but donât do it just for the aesthetics! Itâs about studying, and sometimes that gets messy! Sometimes we fail a test, we spill our tea on our notes, we cry because we donât understand the formula. Thatâs the part you donât see!
Having cute stationery can really help, as well as nice organizers and decorations for your space! I donât have much money so I get a lot of stuff on Amazon or FB Marketplace.
Health
Remember that no matter what you are good enough. Itâs okay if you fail, itâs okay if you struggle.
Itâs also okay if your path doesnât go the way you expected! Maybe you go to a different school than expected! Or choose a trade instead! Maybe you take a gap year! Maybe your passion changes! Maybe it changes six times!
Your health is always more important than your school. If you are in pain, mentally or physically, if you are anxious, exhausted, burnt out, talk to your teachers about it! You matter more than a grade.
Your best is good enough! And your best doesnât look the same as someone elseâs best! Donât compare!
Now go get out there and study!
how to write that 17-page essay thatâs high-key giving you anxiety
so itâs 4am and youâve had three cups of coffee but youâve only written two sentences. you look at the prompt and find it has ceased to make sense. âhow the fuck am i gonna turn this into a 17-page paperâ you ask.Â
never fear! your friendly neighborhood college fuckup is here with an answer. buckle down and get another cup of coffee; youâre in this for the long haul. (literally. this post got long because iâm apparently incapable of writing short posts, but i also pulled a 3.9 cGPA using this method so iâd say itâs worth the read.)
first, a cheat: email your professor and ask if you can use subheaders. subheaders eliminate the need for smooth transitions between portions of your argument and also create a ton of white space, which can help you reach page count.Â
second, a tip: donât be afraid to meet with your prof. this essay probably isnât a take-home exam; itâs likely that your prof set this paper to give you a chance to learn and write about something you enjoy. shoot your prof an email saying âhey, this is what iâm thinking, this is what iâm struggling with, can i meet with you to talk it out?â 9 times out of 10, your prof will say yes. if they say no, talk to another prof in the same discipline. otherwise talk to your uni writing center or a friend of yours. worse come to worst, shoot me a message.
what youâre gonna do now is outline the fuck out of your paper to procrastinate actually writing it.Â
step 1: take apart the prompt. itâll be asking for a few different things; mark these things with different cues: brackets, underlining, different colored pens, whatever. this structures your response.
if you donât know your thesis yet, thatâs fine! let it develop naturally as you conduct your research and plan your argument. you can change it as you go - thatâs the point of researching the topic. no one will know what your first draft thesis was.
step 2: look at the dismembered prompt. write bullets with brief explanations for how youâll attack each part of the prompt. these can be detailed or as vague as âlook up that one reading and use it as a counter argument.â then figure out the best way to organize the bullets. if nothing makes sense, thatâs fine too. you can write each chunk of your argument and structure it later.
these bullets make good subheaders. js.
step 3: under each bullet from step 2, list out what info and evidence you need for that aspect of your argument. donât worry about details yet; focus on structure. write these bullets as though youâre talking to a friend about what your argument is and why is works. let it be stupid. let it be simple. say shit like âfreud was a bitch and i can prove it.âÂ
step 4: now that you have a rough draft of your outline, go back and fill in the details. remember, youâre still outlining! youâre basically redoing step 3 with the bullets you made in step 3. this is the part where i take the most time and put in the most effort.
i tend to reach page/word count easily if my outline is half the length the paper needs to be, so i keep outlining until i reach that point. this ratio might be different for you. if you can figure out your ratio, it can tell you if you need to look for more info or if youâre good to go.
make a note of what youâre citing but donât worry about actual citations. i like using gdocs because you can easily paste a link to your source in a comment. this way, the sources donât clutter up your doc or artificially inflate your page or word count.
be silly! be stupid! use swear words and memes and internet lingo. youâre just outlining right now; you donât need to sound smart and professional. you should be focusing on what you want to say, not how to say it.
by the end of this process, my outline is basically my paper in bulletpoint format, without any fancy jargon or quotes or cited evidence, and usually not in complete sentences. iâve essentially tricked myself into writing my paper by saying âiâm just outlining, it doesnât really matter.â itâs also less daunting to write the rest of the paper when you know you already have 9 pages done instead of 0.
step 5: write the damn thing! open a fresh doc for your paper and view it side-by-side with your outline. now you get to make your bullets sound pretentious and academic. insert quotes and other evidence. turn âfreud was a bitchâ into âfreud knowingly perpetuated several falsehoods for the sake of his personal gain, thereby undoing decades of progress in the field of psychology.âÂ
donât worry about citations right now, though! do what you did in your outline and insert the citations as comments at the points where they need to be. creating citations will interrupt your flow.
step 6: once your paper is done, go back and add citations! this can take up to an hour depending on how many sources you have, so budget your time appropriately.Â
holy shit! you just wrote a whole damn paper! iâm proud of you, buddy. go buy yourself a milkshake and take a nap.Â
that wilfred owen poem about everyone kissing the crucifix but he kisses the hands of the boy whos holding it hits HARD not sure why but damn
found it....

Flexible Time Blocking: A More Breathable Way to Get Things Done
Iâve met a lot of people who struggle with sticking to a schedule - myself included - so hereâs one way you can get things done without restricting your spontaneity.
Linked: The ABCDE Method: Accomplish Tasks More Efficiently
Hope this helps!
â Seize time opportunities. If I have 15 minutes until your next class, I sit down and do homework in the hallway. If I have a long commute, Iâll do flashcards. This works because you most likely wonât have anything else to do anyways, so itâs easier to get your work done.
â Start something. When I get a lab report assignment, the first thing I do is pull up the directions and at least start the cover page and pull up some research links. It takes 5 minutes but it gets the ball rolling and makes it more likely that youâll finish what you started.
â Auto-mode. When I procrastinating, itâs usually because Iâm too busy thinking about what Iâm going to do. Instead, I like to pretend Iâm in âauto-modeâ and just get started as fast as I can. auto-mode means shutting out distracting thoughts or pleas to watch one more funny cat video and forcing your hands to open your textbook. Works every time.
â Personally, creating time schedules donât work for me because if I fall out of time, the whole schedule falls apart and I usually give up. Instead I use time games. Iâll tell myself something like âwork as hard as you can until 11:00 sharp and if you finish, you can have a breakâ. This is great for developing self discipline because itâs in the moment so you can be more realistic and flexible.
â I donât like writing down earlier due dates in my planner because itâs confusing so instead, itâs good to have some sort of mental rule. for example, my mental rule is to finish everything at least two days before the due date. following through with that will keep you on track.
â Do a little bit every day. If you have a big project, chip at it within a week rather than stressing out 2 days before itâs due. the same goes for studying for an exam. if you review lecture notes and attend office hours after class + work on flashcards throughout the week, then do a final review at the end, youâll be well prepared and wonât need to cram. Itâs a good habit and you wonât get stressed. Two birds with one stone.
â Use mornings too. Iâm not really an early bird, but using mornings to get some work / chores done is great because it gives you a productive start to the day, which makes you feel proud of yourself for knocking out half of your tasks in the a.m.Â
a. Lay out your lecture notes / worksheets on the table the night before and open your work tabs on your computer so theyâll be the first thing you see when you turn on your computer.
b. Put your computer far away from your work space and go to sleep.
c. When you wake up, the first thing that youâll see is your âpaperâ work, so get it done first. then start on your âscreenâ work (youâll be less likely to get distracted if you do your âpaperâ work first). when you open your laptop the first thing youâll see are the work tabs you opened the night before. Your job is to go on auto-mode and get started.
Good luck with self-discipline. Youâll do great. -thoughtscholar
