this is the academic year that i learned of the existence of the lesbian masterdoc on tumblr and tiktok -- and like. yall. this is why we need higher education.
"compulsory heterosexuality and lesbian existence" (1980) by adrienne rich is not a manual or a guide, nor is compulsory heterosexuality a set of boxes to check off to find your (sexual) self, or a set of definitions or features of a definition. compulsory heterosexuality is an analytic concept.
and the idea of updating rich's work is laughable given that rich herself wrote a new preface in 2003 and that this text has been part of feminist theorizing for decades now.
this text has a political, intellectual, and social history, a set of intellectual lineages and genealogies which rich was in conversation with, a set of other feminist thinkers rich was in conversation with, and an actual analytic drive and intervention.
also, full offense, you actually do need to understand the intellectual history of rich's intervention to understand the actual intervention she makes in that article, in order to then understand the concept of heteronormativity, which is coined by michael warner in 1991, in direct conversation with adrienne rich among others -- not half because both rich and warner are coining these concepts to name particular social, epistemic, political, economic, and historical formations.
these are not manuals for measuring and compiling and assembling identity! identity is in fact a form and formation rich and warner (and others) are critiquing!
(and by critique i mean seriously engaging in a sustained manner in order to understand and interpret and analyze! not dislike and whine and complain about in the most superficial of ways!)
(it's a strange thing when people separate privilege as a category of analysis from state power because the entire point about privilege is that it is structural, which necessarily includes the state. like. bruh. when i say privilege especially about passports, i am discussing the state as a historical and political formation and mode -- with borders, for example, as co-constitutive -- of violence)
(just to add: it is, precisely, a discursive technique of both liberalism and neoliberalism to evacuate the structural -- and, as lisa lowe has shown us, the transnational -- from our understanding of the world. this is part of how we end up with, among other things, the mythology of the american dream, the degregadation of public goods and cultures, and the privatization of resources and kinship -- including through state-backed monogamy and heteronormativity across settler and neocolonial and postcolonial contexts. this is part of how we get to the idea that failure is individual rather than a feature and technique of global racial capital to constantly produce and reproduce a disposable labor force and surplus populations which can be condemned to slow death. this is part of how we get to wellness culture and the commodification of care, not to mention the rise of the influencer as a figure who embodies -- on the deepest level of meaning of that analytic term -- a/the commodification of self as subject(hood) and life as product)
