Hello everyone. Today I'll begin talking about the races in my game Alchemists of Kelrina. I will start by telling you the name of the race and how society treats them. Then i will go into physical descriptions and in-game mechanics for that race. Today's race is… humans! Before the cataclysm humans were the only race, as such there are a few remaining survivors who are the only ones that remember the cataclysm, also all ruins and remnants from before the cataclysm are their handiwork. Humans are in the process of adjusting to life after the cataclysm and are fairly understanding of the new races, there are those however, that see the new races as abominations or humans as the ‘alpha’ race. As far as physical descriptions go I'm assuming you know what humans look like; two hands, two feet, a head, … some parts in between. Whatever you believe is acceptable for humans in our world is okay for Kelrina. Now we get into the part of playing as a human. In many of the games like Alchemists of Kelrina each race you can choose grants your character a static set of bonuses that all characters of that race have. Because of the way the non-human races of the game work (you will see this next time) I knew that system wouldn't work, so instead I came up with a system that truly lets you customize your character. In Alchemists of Kelrina each race has access to a large set of perks, each with their own value; the more powerful a perk is, the more expensive it is. You are only given a couple points to buy your perks so to afford more there is also a list of flaws you can give yourself to gain more points to spend on perks. For example humans have access to a perk that raises one of their stats by 1 and they can buy this perk multiple times. To get the most use out of it the player must also select some flaws they want their character to have to use so they may use the perk again. I'm really excited to begin showing you the other races of Kelrina and how you can play them next time. As a reminder I'm posting all of this in anticipation of releasing the player's guide to you early next year. I’m getting closer to the parts about the mechanics of the game and I just can’t wait to share them! I talked about the cataclysm two weeks ago, so today’s topic is about the present, ninety eight years later. When the cataclysm erupted it caused massive changes in the world; deserts, jungles, swamps, and mountains appeared where once there was none. Meaning much of the current world is very different to what it once was. In addition, the thick concentrated magic coating much of Kelrina making it inhospitable might have dissipated from the world but it caused hundreds of thousands of people to relocate leading to pockets of highly populated areas. Plus, as the ones that put the Grand Alchemist in power, the World Government has lost much of its influence and support, causing worldwide political panic. As you can see much of the world is still in chaos; food and supply shortages, economic unrest, and uncertainty of the world outside the boundaries of civilization. Banditry is at an all time high, but so is relief efforts; and that is where you and the MACAR agency come in. The MACAR agency began as a volunteer center to help recover from the cataclysm, now it has become a mercenary corporation doing odd jobs for people all over the world. MACAR takes people from all walks of life including the non-human races that have been appearing after the cataclysm, after all, Kelrina is a different world now. You and your friends may choose to go a different direction with your game, and that’s perfectly fine. The game master’s job is to create the best experience for all players, whether that is doing odd jobs for MACAR or exploring the cataclysmic wastelands or even becoming bandits to scrape by in the chaotic world; there are many ways to play and I am excited for you to see them. Late again but at least not by a week. I'm really excited about how this is going, I did a lot of work this last week and it looks like it's coming together. As I said, at the end of the year I hope to have a player's handbook available online. Soon I'll start posting about the mechanics for Alchemists of Kelrina but for now it's just a little more history. Last time I discussed about the unification of Kelrina and the world government. The government kept peace between the various countries of the world for over 1600 years.This changed with the birth of a sorcerer, Bartholomew Syn. Bartholomew did not know he was a sorcerer for a long time, just that he was stronger and healthier than almost anyone else. Each sorcerer is born with one spell innately known to that person, Bartholomew’s was the ability to dissolve the barrier between the void of magic and the world of man. With this ability he pulled magic into himself. He eventually learned how to control his power and could bring Magic into the world around him, this allowed him to trap the magic and store it allowing it to be researched and utilized. With budding research about the stored magic called ‘Dust’ Bartholomew set out to create towers that would use his spell to bring magic into the world. With his work completed and ten citadels around the world creating magic for the populous Bartholomew was named ‘Grand Alchemist’ by the world government and given the highest seat of power available. But his title would not stand. The Council of Alchemists, a group of high ranking officials, learned of a project the Grand Alchemist was working on in secret. The Council was not pleased with Bartholomew’s project and had him slain, but this led Kelrina to the brink of destruction. Upon his death the citadels went out of control, they poured magic into the world at an alarming rate. What was once a trickle of silvery Dust floating down from the sky became black tarish clouds of concentrated magic coating the ground. Anyone caught in it perished as their bodies were not accustomed to that level of magic. There were some areas throughout the world that the clouds did not reach, they became refugee camps for much of the world, the Capitol was one of them. Within days millions of people died and much of the world was inaccessible, this event became known as the Cataclysm. After forty years the clouds began to dissipate and humanity vowed to reclaim the world but it had been forever changed. Alchemists of Kelrina takes place ninety-eight years after the Cataclysm and in two weeks I'll tell you some of the changes to the world and what it means for your characters. Sorry for the late post, things got a little hectic when my child was born. Hopefully I'll be back on schedule next week. When we last left off, five kingdoms on the continent of Talrin were heading for a war against one another, sending their greatest sorcerers on a campaign of destruction through the land. The war the kingdoms planned for never came to pass though. Late one night five sorcerers, each from a different kingdom, met in secret. Each sorcerer hated the idea of war, they met to form a truce that these five, the most powerful sorcerers in each country, would not participate in the upcoming war. While debates about the best way to put forth this truce, the youngest among them spoke of a different plan. Wherever sorcerers went war followed and he wanted to break the cycle. He proposed not a truce, but a mission. They would each leave their kingdoms, taking with them whomever they trusted; under the protection of each other the five sorcerers would travel the world gathering allies that shared their beliefs and meet up in the north-western scattered islands. By the time the sorcerers met again they had amassed a vast following; sorcerers, nobility, and commoners all convened on the lawless islands hoping to change the world. The following, now known as the Union, built a massive city, the Capitol, that connected several of the islands. With followers from all cultures and countries the Union was able to send heralds around the world. With the Union's beliefs seeping through the world it wasn't long before they became recognized as the World Government. With the World Government established, the year the truce was called became the world's year zero, and the peace was kept for more than 1600 years after. But the world was not ready for what came next, and that is where I will pick up next time. Two weeks ago I talked about magic and Dust, how it is a part of people, inseparable from them. But that is a new development to the world. Today I'm taking a look at the past, the origins of sorcery and Kelrina’s history. Magic was once only able to be used by sorcerers, it existed in a void beyond an impenetrable barrier, inaccessible to normal people. Each sorcerer is born with one spell ingrained within them, but some sorcerers will go their whole lives never realizing what it is, never casting a spell, and not knowing their potential. When a sorcerer casts a spell they reach through the barrier and pull magic into them, the magic follows a pattern inside the sorcerer’s body and upon flowing through the pattern the spell forms. Through rigorous studies and discussions one sorcerer can learn the pattern, or rune, of another sorcerer, then they can pass that rune onto another sorcerer. This process would fill libraries with scrolls of runes and their abilities, leaving the sorcerers and their scribes as the leading class. Kingdoms thrived and fell under the hands of powerful sorcerers, no technology, no strategy could pose a threat to these powerful beings. A country's power was decided based on the number of sorcerers under their command. As the sorcerers grew in power, attacks on libraries and schools became more prominent, as a way to stop the learning of new spells, this sent the war torn countries into an era of chaos and panic. On the continent of Talrin five kingdoms sent their greatest sorcerers on a campaign that would plunge the world into a great war. But that is a story for next time. Today is March 26th and that means that today I'm starting my year long plan of promoting my new project, a paper and pencil role-playing game named... Alchemists of Kelrina! When I hear the word alchemist the first thing I think of is the way they create things. There is far more to creating your character than race and class, and I'll get into that more later but for right now just know that I'm also working on an interesting system for crafting weapons, armor, and other things. More than anything else, what I want you and your friends to create is stories. Stories of adventure, trickery, comedy, cunning, and whatever else you can come up with. In jokes with your friends or spectacular tales to share with the world; create your stories, your way. One last thing before I go. In the world of Kelrina there is magic inside every living being, just waiting to be unleashed. This magic is referred to as Dust, because when condensed it coats the ground and floats through the air like shimmering glowing motes of dust. Each skill in the game may cost your character some dust, no matter what fighting style you choose. With this system I can make sure all skills that require the same amount of Dust will be at an even power level. Thanks for following as this project progresses, I'll see you in two weeks. #AoK

I couldn't think of anything creative that either rhymed or was alliterative with November and dealt with making things so sorry for the lame title. This step is where it all comes together, where ideas become tangible. If you are writing a book during National November Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) you know that the idea is to put your words on paper and get your book written, that's the same thing I'm going for here, getting a game that people can actually play. A prototype is good and it will help you to figure out where there are problems but it doesn't replace the real thing, after all this step is about making something you can get into other people's hands. With the information I got in the last step; major mechanics, game direction and feel, and my target audience's expectations; I should be ready for the public to see it. Before other people can play my game they need to know the rules and that requires a rule book. I'm going to write out all the steps, from the moment the game is unboxed to when it's being put away. I'm going to be extra detailed in this part, probably writing it as I play by myself just to make sure starting elements of the game are towards the beginning and ending things at the end. Not everything I write will make it into the final version (I don't want to overload my players with a textbook) and some parts will be delegated to a 'Fringe Scenario' section of things that don't happen often, but being detailed here will also help to find confusing elements of my game and make them cleaner. I've got a rule book and prototype now I have to find people to test my game, friends and family work for a bit but to really put my game through its paces I need strangers or others who are willing to be brutally honest. Brutal is a major keyword here, with my first playtest my game probably wont be that good and my testers will let me know. I'll take their input and after a couple more rounds of testing I'll modify the game with a new prototype (making sure to change the rule book accordingly) then get back to testing. Yet again meticulous notes about; complaints, compliments, who won, with what strategy, parts of a turn, amount of time spent on a on a phase, on a single player's turn, on the game; will help in figuring out how the game needs to be changed to be the best version it can be (like making sure sure one strategy doesn't dominate, that was my issue last year). Now I made a rule book before testing but for the first few tests I can still help my players along. Talking out the rules the first game or two will make the unpolished areas easier to comprehend. After a few games I should let my players read the rules and only talk when my players have questions (which I should take thorough notes on). There will come a time when I stop talking to my players entirely (but never stop taking notes) and let them figure everything out on their own (I once watched a game for five turns before the players realized they were missing the step that allowed them to score points -_- ). This step should end with a game that can be played right out of the box with people who have never even heard of the game, it doesn't have to be pretty or polished but it does need to make the players want to play again. The next bit is the pretty and polished part making sure players want to pick it up and even buy it in the future. Last month I took a lot of notes from a similar game to the one I'm making and printed mine out on computer paper. I also got a few ideas on things the game was missing so I can't wait to try them out and get other people to see it too. Honestly there was a lot going on personally last month so I'm both disappointed that I didn't do more but also happy I was able to do as much as I did. I am making some changes to my YouTube platform which I go over in this video, if you like seeing videos about game design you might enjoy the videos I plan on making. My video on SuckerPunch's inFamous Second Sun and how they create tutorials for it's players is what I will be aiming for in the future. I hope to see you there!

September is Preptember for me, a time to prepare for my next big project, in this case, a board game. The first step here is to decide what kind of game I'm making. Is it going to be a deck builder? What about a labyrinth-like maze? Are the players going to be working together or against one another? Could there even be a team vs. team mode? There are lots of questions to ask here so I can't get bogged down. The first thing I need to do before I decide anything is to figure out my main game mechanic (or two if I'm feeling like they work well together). If I start with a theme the game might look nice or sound good but chances are it will be very disjointed to play; as long as I have a good mechanic I can try different themes and settings to make the game cohesive. As long as the game is fun you can make a world to match it but no amount of polish will make someone want to play a unfun game twice. To decide on my main game mechanic I'm going to think of all sorts of games I've played. From Monopoly to Magic: the Gathering, Dark Souls to Mario Kart, I'm going to make a list of mechanics that I liked and others that I didn't. I'm also going to spend a little time thinking about what would happen if I changed some mechanics (both that I liked and didn't like) and what the end result would be on the gameplay. With a long list of mechanics I like I (and a few I don't) I'm going to spend a while mixing an matching the good ones and seeing what game ideas pop into my head, chances are I'll have a couple that stick out to me and I'll need to choose between them. To decide which game I want to go with I'll look at a couple of different factors: emotion, uniqueness, simplicity of play, replayablility, and passion. Emotion is what feeling I want my players to have while playing the game, a lot of designers aim for happiness which is good, a happy player equates it as a good game, but don't forget that some players like difficult challenges and games featuring fear as it's main emotion have done very well in the past. Uniqueness or hook will attract players to the game, despite that age old advice people actually DO judge books my the cover, games too. Simplicity of play will allow my players to pick up the game and intuitively understand how to play it, as the designer the game will seem easier to me than to someone who grabs it off of the shelf so I need to be careful here. Replayablility is important because without this players probably won't play the game with their friends and introduce them to the game, without word of mouth it is very difficult to market the game and make a profit. Passion is a factor for me and me alone, how interested in this game am I? The more I like the game the more energy I will put into creating the game and that effort will shine through to the finished project. Once I have decided on which game I want to make it's time  to start on the next step, prototyping. I will continue next month with Outline October where I will go into detail about how to make a simplified version of a game and start testing. Since this is the first month of this project I don't have a look back yet but I will say that I already have a couple of game ideas that I will start looking into. Alright, Hello everybody. Coming up in September there is a game design competition that lasts until February in the city of Champaign. Each month during the competition not only will I keep you up to date about my progress but I will also go in depth about how I go about my creative process. I will specialize in one step of creation each month. The steps and Months will be broken down as follows: September Thought Dump/Preparation, October Outline/Prototype, November Create/Test, December Edit/Iterate, January Market/Publicity, and February Publication/Finalization. There are a few things to note about this list; first you may absolutely proceed to the next step before the end of the month, second if it takes more than a month to finish don't worry about it many stages like November's creation are difficult and will take time, this is just intended to help keep me on track and for any aspiring creatives to follow along with any of their projects and keep pace and ask questions on the way. If anyone has any questions or comments I'd love to hear them. I made this to follow the same time frame of my contest but I have been thinking of adding one or two things to it so with your help I might make this a little more inclusive for next year. Design a game – There is a game design competition that takes place in my city each year. I've competed for the last two years and did okay but this year I hope to at least get an honorable mention in one of the eight categories. I have about four games I want to prototype and test to find out which game is the best one to compete with.

Knowing the parts of your source material that are needed will assist you in designing a streamlined gaming experience but cramming in parts just as reference to your source will bog you down and jerk the player out of the flow of your game.
