Why can't a salmon do some bullshit for once

I caught up with the Schemers' Tale Gate a little bit ago, and Taliesin said something there that stood out to me, in response to Liam discussing Hal's use of the theatre to portray the history of the Rungjani. His commentary is...not great, and I think it also lies at the heart of the issue with the way Taliesin is handling Bolaire's view of Thjazi:
"I can retort with history is a snapshot of the present, and history is made by storytellers. Facts come and go; stories are what lasts. [...] It only takes one good diary to change our perspective on a whole situation that happened a hundred years ago. [...] I was literally thinking of a diary that was found during the San Francisco earthquake that actually, like—we find these things and suddenly we realize that a whole bunch of people were full of shit."
Yeah, I don't need a doctorate in history to know this sucks. One single primary source may be all it takes to convince a subset of people that actually a historical figure was incompetent or terrible, but that does not mean that perception is accurate. One lone diary isn't a study of history in any meaningful sense; it's a record of one person's experience, and that alone is not historiography. Caring more about story than about facts is not a good thing—one of those things is pretend and the other has an actual impact on real people's lives. This is incredibly self-congratulatory; it has nothing substantive to do with this entirely separate discipline; it's frankly pretty bad storytelling anyway; and it would furthermore make most actual academics grind their teeth at the kindest.
But it also sheds some light on why Taliesin, out of game, insists that Thjazi can't possibly be working for a happy ending that is inclusive of the PCs and that he actually planned for half the PCs to die and that everyone who likes him is a "schmuck". He truly believes that if only everyone could just read Bolaire's diary, they'd all agree Thjazi was full of shit. He truly believes that he alone has the game-changing knowledge, and everyone else is too willfully blind to try to look for it.
I don't think that's particularly nuanced. I think it's just inverted Great Man Theory. Considering I learned better in my APUSH classes, I think calling that sophomoric is an insult to high school sophomores.
The degree to which modern fans deliberately project their personal psychological issues onto fictional characters is alarming.
You are expected to "relate" to some characters and stories. Yes. That is not the same thing I keep witnessing, where people will decide a given character is literally everything they are the very instant they have anything in common, or an antagonist is exactly like a real person who hurt them, and emotionally invest SO much into this that they can feel actually betrayed when the events deviate from exactly the catharsis they hoped for.
This seems so normalized by some people, I suspect they assume by default that this is basically what fiction is "for" and it never even crossed their minds that you're supposed to enjoy most stories as an outside observer rather than as some sort of guided roleplay session.
This is why creators get harassed and abused more than ever by entitled fandoms.
No, it's not normal, you are not supposed to think of it that way, fictional characters are separate beings from you.
I think fandoms tend to vastly overestimate the relationship between the audience and the creators of the source material. Creators are not obligated to touch their work ever again. All they did was create a work of art. They don't have to do anything beyond that. At any point, they can say "I'm done working on this." You are their audience, not their constituents.

Completely personal preference but gonna be real with you, vampires and werewolves and stuff like that just don't hit the same for me without the angst, the guilt, the terror, like what's the point, "oh but what if he was just a puppy," yeah yeah, that's nice, I don't care, what if their very being was tearing them apart from the inside, what if the hunger never stops clawing and clawing and clawing even if you have it under control for the moment, not to say there's not exceptions or variations, those who've come to terms with or revel in their nature or etc., different opportunities for silliness or softness for sure, but to strip *all* manner of horror or discomfort from the lore, it's like wow, where is the appeal, the flavour, I hope you're hungry FOR NOTHING, just like your "vampire" apparently
Nolan is decidedly an artist who has an appreciation for and respect for cinema and the craft of film making, and he has a love for making films that are supposed to be strange, dreamlike, even nonlinear. which is hindered by the fact that he, strangely, seems completely uncreative and artistically bland.

why is there an upgrade button on gmail. why does twitter want me to scan my palm to get into my account. why is google a chatbot. why does the transit app make a transit app wrapped for me. why does youtube keep shoving its infinitely scrollable shortform content down my throat. why do my doctor and psychiatrist and therapist want to use an ai notetaker during our appointments. why do free trials want my credit card number. why are most scholarship websites just data brokers. how do i make capitalone stop sending me mail. why is my school making its own special chat gpt powered chatbot. why is every third video on instagram an undisclosed ad. why is nothing online real anymore. why is everything so FUCKING STUPID
I have been connecting a lot of dots lately and the dots have made it quite difficult for me to enjoy slashfic the way I used to
I know we've all noticed how often one of them is bisexual and the other one is Gay. Exclusively Gay. He Has To Be Gay. but have you also noticed how often the bisexual one is masc and straight passing and the Gay One is kind of written as this kind of vaguely effeminate degendered third gender thing. Which in a vacuum is kind of interesting even despite the obvious issues and explains a lot about which characters I as a nonbinary youth tended to project on etc etc, but also have you noticed that lately that's kind of slowly evolving into now The Gay One is always transgender and The Bi One is always cis? Because I've been noticing that a lot lately and it's not making me evil and insane at all (lying)
it's also hard as hell to read slash if you care about any of the women in the canon literally at all. Which is something I've been struggling with generally since I was 15 but as the years go on it's just getting harder and worse.
Characters will make a very nuanced choice that makes sense for their story arc and internal conflict, and audience members will be like "is anyone else going to misconstrue this in the most black and white, bad faith manner possible?"
you have destroyed and betrayed yourself for a nuanced reason

*while sewing*: you are a fabric. you can stay a fabric. you do not yearn to return to being string.
A thing I see happen a lot when we get into discussions of natural fibers vs synthetics on this hellsite and elsewhere is a conflation of when the topic is about Fiber Properties and when the topic is about Environmental Impact.
Like more than once I’ve seen posts be like, “you should buy one $200 Real Wool Sweater instead of 4 $50 acrylic ones, trust me it’s worth it.”
And what the post means is, the wool sweater will feel nicer to wear, keep you warmer, and last longer than the 4 $50 ones combined.
(vimes boots theory obligatory mention)
And then someone comes on and replies, “yes this is probably a good idea but we must remember that industrially produced wool yarn has complex chemical treatment in the process, so the wool sweater is still not perfect environmentally speaking.“
And it’s like. That’s not factually wrong. But it has no bearing on what OP was saying because even without it being outright spelled out it’s pretty obvious OP was recommending real wool for properties, not impact. This is also where I’ve seen several different posts about rayon go off the rails, for obvious reasons.
Anyway it’s a good thing to keep in mind when fiber posts go past. Most of the best reasons to wear linen/wool/silk instead of synthetic fibers have more to do with post-production interaction with the world and with your body than with environmental impact during production.
