It’s after Spiderman got badly hurt in a fight.

His wounds are already healed but Tony and Peter are fighting about taking unnecessary risks and taking on more than you can handle

Tony’s angrily hammering away on a piece of metal thinking through the entire argument again after Peter stormed away in anger

And then Tony has the sudden realization that this is how Pepper felt: this clammy scared feeling, the absolute terror of not knowing wether the person you love will come back to you alive

He finally understands and he feels retroactively bad for Pepper but now he at least knows what’s going wrong

Knows how it feels from both sides. Has a chance to communicate and change the trajectory of where their relationship might be headed

Peter is of course disappointed at such an action, and questions it with a— "Well, when's the next one?" With his soft, raspy voice.

"Mmm... August Tenth, 2019." The man answered, gently pushing the teen away by his chest.

But when he and Peter start their relationship he promises himself to be better this time. To not hide when it gets bad

He has to find out that it’s somehow impossibly hard to actually speak up about it

But that’s okay because Peter sees when Tony gets twitchy, when his smile is a little bit to fake bright and a little bit too brittle, when the jokes he makes are meant to distract

Peter watches and notices and he stops what they’re doing to ask about it

Peter hums something that might be yes. He’s twenty-three, an Avenger, technically very capable. Right now, he’s wrapped in three blankets and losing a fight with the flu.

Tony presses a mug to his lips. “Slow. It’s just tea. No nanites. Promise.”

Peter manages a weak smile and sips, then immediately leans into Tony’s side like it’s muscle memory. Tony freezes for half a second—then relaxes, arm coming around him without thinking.

“You should be in the lab,” Peter mumbles.

“I am,” Tony says. “This is advanced field research on stubborn superhumans who refuse to rest.”

Peter laughs, which turns into a cough. Tony rubs slow circles between his shoulder blades until it passes.

“Stay?” Peter asks, quiet, vulnerable in a way he rarely lets himself be.

Tony kisses his hair, careful, reverent. “I’m not going anywhere.”

Peter’s breathing evens out soon after, warm and solid against Tony’s chest. Tony stays still, watching the rise and fall, thinking—absently—that saving the world can wait a few hours.
