We report at sunset: it is a rare night when we feel perfectly content, and perhaps even relieved, in watching the sun go down. Not an ounce of melancholy in our heart as the sky darkens. Our expert is putting water out for the birds amidst a chorus of crickets.

So, remember a few weeks back when I was reblogging a bunch of comics and art from a little wholesome blog called @geraldineetmona? Well, look what I ended up buying and having shipped all the way from France.
Yes, it's the book for this adorable little comic series. And, I figured I'd make a little post about it and my thoughts.
Now, the thing I love about this series is just the slice of life aspect of it and its approach to the concept. I always love stuff like that, so Geraldine and Mona was pretty much my neck of the woods in interests. I came across this series randomly while looking for art elsewhere and it caught my eye for how different the vibe is from most slice of life comics and in general the wholesome factor.
I mentioned this in a previous ask, but I get major Hilda and Johanna vibes from this whole series. Maybe it's the single mom/daughter character duo or just the more Euro vibe of it all compared to what you might see in an American made story of a similar manner that Hilda similarly has got, it just makes it work. And speaking of, yes, the book is all in French.
While there are English translations on the main blog, the book is French (duh, it literally came from France, lol). But that also makes it kind of unique in my book collection, as it's the first French book I got instead of English. Plus, it was a good chance to refresh myself on French, a language I literally spent 6 years learning in public school (spoiler alert, I still suck at it and yet ironically, I've been to Paris but not Montreal, lol). But TBH, it's so worth it cause the visuals in this book are amazing. @francoisl-artblog, you got some mad talent!
Speaking on the characters, I love the dynamic between Geraldine and Mona. They're both super funny, wholesome and all around fun. Geraldine is a pretty sweet and caring mom and Mona is hilariously funny and yet also adorable. You love them both instantly.
One thing I find pretty interesting about this book and comic series, is the whole ever present realistic struggles of parenting, work/life balance, and the ever obvious effects that all has on your waistline, lol. And yet despite that, it's all explored in a really fun, innocent and body positive way. It even says on the book's official page that it's a great balance of a story in anxieties on appearance and life, through a pretty fun and childishly innocent way. You don't really see something like that in books aimed especially at younger readers, so it was fun to see how it portrays it in a way that you feel almost able to relate to. You'll find Geraldine's struggles and highs and lows all so true, while also finding fun with Mona's antics and hilariously child like ways to deal with things you probably can relate with too. I mean, who hasn't wanted to eat a mountain of pancakes, or crash out Windows being Windows?
All in all, Geraldine and Mona is a truly wonderful book/comic series. This was without a doubt, one of my better impulsive buys made at 12 AM with little idea what I was getting myself into. I was genuinely surprised and loved it. There's just a charm to stuff like this that as I've said above, you just don't get from most American shows or comics. Hilda was probably the closest I've seen to that and now Geraldine and Mona. Guess that's what happens when you're like me and grew up on Canadian made cartoons that had a similar vibe or with Euro studios in collab (cough cough Babar). If that doesn't make any sense at all, don't worry. I can't explain it but for me, that's just what I enjoy seeing most and this book does that well.
If I had any nitpicks, it would probably be the page count being 48 when the website said 56 (though maybe that includes everything rather than just numbered in book pages) and of course, an English version of the book would be nice, given there are English translations on Tumblr already. Though, if that may be down the line fingers crossed which I've heard could be, I'd 100% buy it.
But those are nothing really in the grand scheme of it all. This is a solid read. I'll leave the purchase links below. I ended up getting it from Amazon cause in Canada it is sold there and also cause the official site wasn't loading for me for some reason till now (maybe my browser was broken, lol).

It's always nice having a physical copy of something you see online IMO. Be it merch from a show you love or a book for a comic series you enjoy. And on top of that, I love finding new stuff to obsess over or talk about beyond my usual Gravity Falls stuff or more.
So, if Geraldine and Mona is something you find interesting, get a copy and support a super wholesome series and a great artist.
Is honestly the best review I ever gotten on this comic. Like, I'm really glad that you love that much : ) ! This. and the recent DTIYS, you. have no idea how much this is motivating me to keep going ! Thank you so much !
I do love that you bring up the "Parenting struggling" part, It's something that I kinda want to show more often, and it's actually more present in the 2nd tome (That will release ONE DAY, but I think I'm on my own for this one, so i don't know WHEN...) With also other stuff, like school, friends, and more !
I initially wanted to release both french and english in physical, but it's kinda not possible at the moment... that's why I nowadays try to share some translated pages from both tome, so you still can see them ! Still love that you have the french version, it means a lot : D ! Once I can do both and can find a way to be available to send them all around the world, trust me, I will !
(There's also A LOT more on Patreon, at the current time ! Just in case, just in case ; ) )
For the page mistake, this is from my current publishers, The. actual pages is indeed 48, I don't know where the 56 is from, and this haven't been fixed yet... I don't know why ^^'...
Thanks too for sharing the Amazon link ! It's still in french only, but It's still there ^^ !
So ! Thank you so much for your kind words and review, I now need to do even more with them ! Which is in the work ^^ ! (Along another project that I CAN'T WAIT to reveal once I can ^^ !)
Also, you mentioning Gravity Falls revived my fond memories for this show that I used to love a lot back then. Gonna watch it again now so I can do fan art stuff.
So, someone on X has found the image from FRUiTS Magazine that the one Tokyo Pop Barbie outfit was directly copied from, but, The Internet Being The Internet, they didn't say which issue it was. It's entirely possible someone in the replies there did say, but I don't have an X account so I can't see the replies.
Using the magazine image from the X post, I did a reverse image search and found a Pinterest that labeled it July 2000, so I went to The Internet Archive and found July 2000, and it wasn't there.
I looked at issues around then, and found it in September 2000
The famous Harajuku street fashion magazine
Barbie photo from here
What might not be so obvious is that the text on the waistband area of the original is...not suitable for an American toy...
I saw the FRUiTS image in 2004 or '05, showing what a direct rip off the doll outfit is, but didn't think about saving it myself back then, because none of us knew that information would be harder to find in the future
@roisindubh211 asked about the print on the...oh, looking closer at the image, I can sees that it's at the neckline and sleeves, too, so it may have been an undershirt
The bright yellow letters are hard to read, but the other colors say ROCK, DOPE, SURF, and FUCK, with some mirrored. I can't find a completely clear image of the doll's clothes, but...yeah. One or two of those words isn't gonna make it onto the shelves at Walmart XD

"Whether someone understands it or not, these are the consequences of the political views they're espousing" is a pretty important analysis tool for online movements because quite honestly, over half of everyone engaging in politics online have no foundations for the stuff they're saying and are just saying whatever makes them feel like a member of an in-group.
If your in-group is "the left" you're very much not immune to this. In fact, trying to do left-wing politics without even trying to build a foundational political understanding is a great way to end up as a neo-nazi with a tumblr accent rather than an effective left-wing advocate.
as much as everyone loves "the power of love won't save us, we need the power of incredible violence" i'm sorry to rain on your parade but we've actually tried that about ten million times as a species, and you'll be shocked to hear the power of incredible violence, without the power of love behind it, is just brutality. the power of incredible violence has been ruling (various parts of, and then the entire) world for the past 5,000 years. ours is not that damn special.
like yes use that gun you found but WHY are you using it? on who are you using it? what would make you stop using it? is your goal to live in a world where every problem is solved by violence, or is your goal to do the violence necessary to live in a world where that necessity is unthinkable?
#I'm a pacifist so I don't necessarily believe every word of this post but it actually makes an amazing point#everyone take a moment to think about this /light-hearted
on the subject of pacifism, if you are interested: i consider myself what i would call a preferential pacifist. i think we should always hold peace and non-violence as a moral preference, meaning we should always choose it when it viably leads to a better world, or the least-violent choice that is viable, and when we do choose violence we must make further decisions that allow us to eventually choose peace again.
i think sometimes violence is necessary to uphold greater moral values, including peace, but ultimately it should be something we are forced to do to some extent, and we should only do it while actively looking for other options.
its a cliche but im a slut for when a character is introduced as super chill and goofy and then you later find out theyre chill and goofy because theyre too powerful to be touched. the level 100 wizard whos already figured out everything and is just vibing now. big fan.
I do wish we could make it a little more socially acceptable to wander the streets at night weeping inconsolably I feel like that would have a great catharsis factor for a lot of people
listen it was a lighthearted goof but I am a little sick of people going "um what's stopping you?? no one will care." I'm glad that you live somewhere that people walking around showing signs of loud emotional distress never get harassed or bothered or have the cops called on them! not everyone does.
