Damian hears you before he can see you. Or rather, he can hear you wrangling Bora before you even round the corner to meet with him.

“No, no- you stay in there you little fiend- OUCH stop biting my fingers you adorable little shit,” your cries ring in his ears. Despite himself, the corners of his mouth twitch at your misery.

No sooner does he think of perhaps coming to your aid, do you actually walk around the corner and spot him immediately. He takes a second to take in your mildly disheveled appearance—scratches across your face and skin, your clothes untucked and wrinkled from you wrestling with a cat maybe 15% of your size and stumbling over yourself while you try to keep her inside the basket.

Damian is torn between finding great amusement in your suffering or pitying, but he settles on a little bit of both when you run towards him and thrust the basket with Bora towards him.

“Your daughter is treating me like a scratch tree.” No hi, no hello or nice to see you—judt an immediate complaint and gossip from the very start. Damian takes the basket out of your hands, an eyebrow quirking up at the statement. “Perhaps you haven't been treating her well enough?” He questions teasingly. He does not comment on you calling a cat his daughter because surprisingly, he's gotten used to it now. At some point, you've taken to calling Bora his daughter when you realized just how fondly he treats his pets—or rather after he explained that he viewed his pets as family members with the same standing as his siblings or hypothetical children.

Ever since then, all your updates about Bora had exclusively referred to her as his daughter. Amongst his favourites are an exasperated voice note you sent at three in the morning, violent scratching and meowing in the background. “Damian,” you had whispered in the voice of someone with no will left to live, “your daughter isn't letting me sleep and I need to get up early. I am blaming you entirely—she certainly didn't learn that from me.” He did not remind you that she spent most of her time with you, figuring that he might end up blocked or banned from seeing Bora.

As soon as he takes the basket and Bora is able to see him, she becomes gentle and quiet, rubbing her nose against his hand and purring satisfied. “There she is,” he muses, a little too smug at the sight of your offended expression. “I- She was being a demon the entire way here! Why you!-”. Almost like she could feel your frustration and Damian’s smugness, Bora let out a particularly deep purr that cut you off mid sentence. All of a sudden, you deflated and your momentary anger dissipated, turning into disappointment instead as you trudged along Damian to the shelter’s entrance. “Unbelievable,” you muttered, “I feed her, wash her, house her, dote on her all day long and then she turns around and cuddles up to the guy who sees her like once a day.”

Damian glances at you, his eyes filled with mirth. “Oh? Are you saying she should be grateful you're providing the bare minimum?”

Baiting you was stupidly easy, he has learned over the past week. He doesn't think you even realize it yourself, the way you jump at every opportunity to argue with him. As soon as he gives you as much as an inch of an opening, you're barreling head first into it, intent on turning any passing comment into a full fledged debate.

“That's not what I'm saying at all,” you retort sharply, “Are you implying that wishing my efforts would be appreciated is somehow nonsensical?”

His answer comes quickly, not even an argument he actually believes in but just a statement I rail you up even more. “No, but it does give the impression of you thinking this is a transactional relationship where you're allowed to demand things from Bora when you're the one who decided to take her in.”

The two of you continue the argument until a staff member leads you to the back room where all the animals are. Well, argument isn't exactly the fitting word here, it's more so Damian saying whatever comes to mind that he knows will get a reaction out of you and you falling for his trap hook, line and sinker.

By the time you two make it to the main common area where the employee explains the morning shift has settled the animals, you've quoted three different books and gone on a tirade about the importance of being valued for one's effort and emotional care work being undermined.

He allows you to ramble on and on, gently guiding you to sit down before the animals curiously flock to the two of you. You're still rambling and defending your point when a Rottweiler approaches you, circling the two of you until he settles in front of you. Only then do you stop, too enamored by the animals that begin to seek your attention.

Damian watches, torn between petty jealousy and admiration as he watches you laugh and play with the animals. He can't help but flare when you get to pet all the dogs because for some inexplicable reason, they do not acknowledge his existence next to you.

You turn to him, perhaps to tease him and flaunt your new found victory in terms of animal affection when you freeze. He thinks maybe there's something on his face or behind him, but you just stare at him wide eyed like you'd just seen a ghost. Tentatively, he calls your name and taps your shoulder, his mind already going into doctor mode to figure out what's wrong with.

You break your silence with a stammered response. “You- you are the kid from the debate competition.” Your realization cracks something open in Damian—memories of that day that has kept him up for years to come. How could they not? It had been the very first time he'd been bested in something by someone that was not his superior. Oh, the humiliation of losing to you had stung and burnt him alive like an inferno.

Yet, even when he was thoroughly and completely crushed by his defeat, he had taken his time to appreciate your skill and the way you glowed under the stage lights when receiving your prize.

He leans back, supporting himself against the wall when he smirks sharply. “It took you remarkably long to remember me despite the clear signs I've given you.”

Heat floods your face, your fingers reflexively curling around the cat that has settled in your lap to receive some love and attention. “Why didn't you say anything when you've known all this time?”

For that, Damian does not have an answer. He shrugs, busting himself with coaxing Bora into socialising with her fellow cats while avoiding your betrayed gaze. “I just thought it was a little ironic of us to meet again and didn't feel the need to say anything.”

“I bragged about it!”

Damian's lips threaten to turn upwards into a smile, which he quickly intervenes because that would feel like a defeat of its very own kind. “And I've been systematically dismantling your arguments about various other topics ever since. I'd say we're even now.”

You go back and forth like that, somehow circling around the topic of the competition and what you've been doing since then. Damian thinks it's a kind of cheesy and maybe far too romantic notion for someone like him to believe in, but he thinks maybe the myth of some things being fated to happen does hold some merit. After all, who would've expected he'd end up spending valentine's day with someone he met so many years ago and swore vengeance against? While raising a cat together you lovingly dubbed your own daughter?

Perhaps, there was hope for someone like Damian Al Ghul in regards to finding a semblance of belonging and if he's lucky and persistent—which, knowing him, he undoubtedly will be—maybe even love, but that's neither here nor there. For now, he'll enjoy listening to the sound of your laughter while basking in the warmth your shared accidental touches send through his body.

dick grayson: You two were lounging in the comfort of your own home, sprawled on your couch, your legs tangling with his. Dick was on one end of the sofa, mindlessly watching TV, while you were on the other end, scrolling through your phone when you saw the trend and decided to try it on Dick.

You couldn't help but giggle before looking up at your boyfriend, who was probably trying not to fall asleep, bored out of his mind.

“Oh my god, babe. I just saw Wally on tinder.” You let out a laugh when you saw Dick come to life when he heard you say that.

“Wally? My Wally? Wallace West?” He asked as he sat up as he looked at you in surprise, a smile on his face. “Let me see.” This poor gorgeous man. He didn't even register everything you said. His eyes just lit up at the tiniest mention of gossip.

“Doesn't he have a girlfriend?” You asked as you tried to suppress another giggle.

“Yeah! Oh my god, let me see that's so funn—” He stopped mid sentence when the realization hit him. “Wait.”

“Why are you on tinder?” Dick’s face looked as if he was just told that the world was ending and to him, it seemed like it.

You couldn't take it anymore, you bursted out laughing when you saw the gears turning on his head. “I’m sorry! I’m sorry!”

“It’s a prank, pretty boy. Calm down.” You said as you wiped away a tear from your eye, calming down from your fit of laughter but Dick just stared at you, mouth gaped.

“It’s not funny!” This grown ass man was pouting. Like actually pouting. “You had me worried.”

“You didn't even realize what I had told you, you just wanted the gossip!”

Dick rolled his eyes as he crawled on top of you. “Never do that again.”

jason todd: “They didn't have the cinnamon buns you wanted, sweets. I got you the blueberry muffin instead.” You smiled as you watched Jason sat down on the small round table you picked out while you were waiting for him to order.

You just finished your classes for the day and Jason was sweet enough to offer to pick you up and take you out for coffee afterwards. Afterall, the idea of spending time with your boyfriend after a long stressful day at uni was just what you needed. Your mind then starts to wander back to that video you saw earlier, a trend, and you wanted to try it out on your sweet loving boyfriend.

“You know I saw the funniest thing earlier.” You said as you picked up the muffin, taking a bite off of it. Your eyes then look back at Jason, who took a sip of his own coffee.

“Yeah? What’d you see, baby?” Jason asked as he looked at you, in a way as if everything that comes out of your mouth was the most important thing in the entire universe. As if you hung the stars for him. You almost felt bad for playing this prank on him but you just had to. For a good laugh, of course.

“I saw Roy on hinge earlier. His description was so funny.” You laughed.

Jason let out a small chuckle as he picked up his own muffin but paused mid-air when he realized what you just said. “Hinge?” His eyes looking like he was trying to stop himself from hurling the cup of coffee across the small cafe.

You nodded with a smile. Gotcha

“Like the dating app?”

“Yeah. Why?” You had to bite your tongue from bursting out laughing.

“Why are you on hinge?” That was it. That’s all it took for you to burst out in fits of laughter. “What? Is this funny to you?” Jason’s brows furrowed in even more confusion. You shook your head. “No, of course not, love.” You almost had it but then you laughed again.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” You had finally calmed down while Jason was still watching you. He still didn’t get why you were laughing, he thought that the idea of him finding out about you being on a dating app was funny to you. “It’s just a prank, honey. Here, look.” You fished out your phone from your pocket and showed Jason the video.

“Oh… so you’re not on hinge?” Jason asked, his cheeks casting a shade of pink as he looked at you.

“Now, why would I be on hinge when I already have the best guy in Gotham?”

tim drake: You were both hanging out in the batcave, you scrolling through tiktok while Tim was working on a case. It wasn’t of top priority but it did got him busy. So busy that he hasn’t paid attention to you in the past two hours. You understood, of course, but you did miss your boyfriend even when he was right next to you. That’s when it gave you an idea. “Timmy, guess what?”

Tim hummed in response, his eyes not tearing away from the batcomputer. The cups of coffee scattered all over the desk, evident of his sleep-deprevation. “I just saw Kon’s profile on tinder. Isn’t it funny?” You smiled mischiefly as you look back on your phone, pretending to be busy. “Yeah, babe.” Tim mumbled as he typed along the keyboard. The keys making a clicking sound as he pressed along. He didn't quite register what you said at first but when it did, he stopped typing and looked at you. His posture stiffened when the words actually hit him.

“...What?”

“Hmm?” Now it was your turn to play dumb. “What?”

“What did you just say?” He asked again, his attention now fully on you.

“I saw Kon’s profile on tinder?”

“WHY ARE YOU ON TINDER?

Now that. That made you laugh, so hard that you almost fell from your seat.

“Relax, it’s a prank!” You said in between giggles Tim glared at you as you kept laughing.

He then stood up from his seat then picked you up from yours, carrying you from your back and behind your knees. You gasped in surprise at his action.

“What are you doing?!”

“I’m going to take a nap. My brain's too fried with the case and your ‘prank’."

damian wayne: It started out as any normal hangout that you have with your boyfriend. Him sketching away on the sketchpad that you got for him, his back resting on the headboard of your bed and you mindlessly scrolling on your phone, laying on your tummy with your feet up in the air, giggling at the funny videos that came across your fyp.

That's when you saw it and thought that this would be a great prank on your boyfriend.

“Qalbi.” You said, grabbing his attention.

Damian looked up from his sketchbook, closing it so he can have his full attention on you.

“I just saw Jon on tinder.” You said as you pretend to keep scrolling on your phone.

“Tinder? The dating app?” Damian furrowed his brow.

“Yeah, he got tons of pictures and everything. He even put his favorite movies, how he would plan the perfect date.” You added. “Isn't that crazy?”

“Hayati, he's single. Jon can do whatever he wants.” Damian said before he went back to sketching again. Just when he was about to pick up where he left off, he realized. How did you find out that Jon’s on tinder??

That's when the pencil he was holding snapped in half.

“How did you see him on tinder?” Damian narrowed his eyes on you. That’s when you started laughing to his face.

“What's so funny? Why are you on tinder? Am I not your boyfriend?” The questions kept coming out of Damian's mouth in rapid fire as you kept laughing.

When you eventually calmed down, Damian was still looking at you in confusion, not understanding why you were laughing.

“It’s just a prank, silly.”

Damian looked at you blankly before saying.

“I hardly see you distressing me with information is called a prank, Beloved.”

“Hayati?” Damian stepped inside your room, looking around but there were no signs of you.

“In the bathroom!” You shouted through the half closed door of the dimly lit bathroom as you continued to clean up the cut on your eyebrow.

As soon as Damian opened the door, his brows furrowed when he saw the state you were in. A cut on your brow and on your knuckles, scrapes on your knees, and he could see a bruise forming on your arm.

“Who did this to you?” You could almost see a vein popping out from Damian's neck with the way he was looking at you. His hands immediately cupping your cheeks to assess the cut even further.

“Dam—”

“Give me a name now. Whoever did this to you will—”

He didn't get to finish his sentence when you interrupted him by pressing your lips against his. His hands moved from your cheeks to your waist, holding you close that you wouldn't get away from him.

When you both part from the kiss, you even had the audacity to give him a grin, feeling proud of yourself for shutting him up.

“I’m okay, I promise. No one did anything.” You reassured him with a soft smile.

“But—”

“These are from my fall.”

“Your fall?” Damian was confused. How did you sustain this many injuries just by falling?

You nodded. “I was practicing some tricks from the skating rink. I couldn't stick the landing, so I kept falling.” You shrugged before looking back into the mirror and stepping out from Damian’s hold, much to his dismay.

“So… you just did this to yourself?” Damian was still baffled as to why are you even doing this to yourself.

You can't help but let out a laugh as you picked up the wash cloth again. “Not on purpose.” You smiled as you looked back on him. “I wasn’t aiming on kissing the ground every 5 minutes.”

Damain sighed as he watched you clean up the dried blood all over your eyebrow before wrapping his hand around your wrist to stop you. “Sit down, I’ll do it.”

“You really don't have to, you know?” You mumbled but did what he says anyway, sitting down on top of the closed toilet seat. He took the wash cloth from your hand, turning on the sink to let the wash cloth be damped a bit.

“I want to, now sit still.” He murmured as he cleaned the blood off.

After he was done cleaning up the cut on your eyebrow, he then focused on the cuts on your knuckles. Cleaning them so gently that you forgot he was raised as an assassin. The way he handled your cuts and bruises like you were the most fragile thing he could hold. That one tiny slip or a grip too strong, you could break or disappear.

“Do you really enjoy doing this? Skating?” He asked as he finished putting bandages all over your knuckles. His eyes then shifted to yours.

You shrugged. “It’s fun.”

“It’s reckless.”

“It’s fun, Dami.” You smiled. Damian thought that your smile alone could end all wars, solve world hunger, and create world peace. He would never say it out loud though, scared that you or any of his family might tease him for it.

“It resulted in you being bruised and bloodied. How is it fun?” He retorted back.

“It just feels thrilling, I guess.” You shrugged again. “I don't know… it’s just… whenever I skate, I just feel like everything else is just background noise. Even just for a moment. I feel like all of my problems are being set to the side when I do my tricks or just skate around the city.” You blurted out.

“It’s stupid, I know. Forget I said anything.” You tried to brush it off with a chuckle before standing up to which Damian followed.

“It’s not stupid, I understand what you mean.” Damian held out your hands, bringing the bandage knuckles up to his lips and kissed it, his eyes staring onto yours with so much love that you don't even understand how you even got this boy to fall in love with you.

“Next time, when you want to skate, let me know. Call me if you must. I’ll come with you.”

You raised a brow. “What? You don't even know how to skate. Or do you?”

“I don't. But I would like to watch you skate, I just want to spend time with you even if I’m just sitting and watching you fall off your board for the hundredth time. I’ll even bring a first aid kit.” At that you let out a laugh.

“I want to be there with you, let the rest of the world be background noise. I’ll even let you teach me how to skate, if I’m feeling nice. I just don't want you to be alone.” He cupped your cheek with one hand and still held your hand with the other.

You nodded as you smiled. “Can I teach you how to do a 360 flip?”

“Don't push it.”

A/N: this is my first ever fic so i apologize in advance if there's any mistakes or grammar errors. english isn't my first language IM SORRY

cold. that's what the air is like in gotham city every night. well, it's cold and dark... and full of crime. crime that practically never sleeps or gets a day off. something that damian and the rest of his family has to deal with every single night. it has been one of those nights where crime has been at an all time high, requiring him to run around the city all night fighting and dealing with mobs, muggers, and some other goons, jumping from one place to another.

"stand by, robin. looks like the situation's already being handled." oracle's voice cut through damian's earpiece just when he was about to make his way to the alley that oracle informed him a mugging was taking place. damian lets out a sigh of relief for a brief moment before realizing that none of his family members are doing their patrol on that side of town, to which got him questioning. who the hell is handling that situation then? "what do you mean it's being handled? by who?" damian furrowed his brows in confusion.

"it's being taken care of." oracle answered back, not telling damian who's in that alley and doing his job. "by who?" damian asked again, this time a little more pressed and little more demanding, his patience running thin. oracle lets out a sigh before she responded. "by arachne."

"who?" damian asked again for the third time, sounding like an owl, babs thought. she had to force herself not to let out a snort at that. "arachne." she said again, as if that gave damian even more knowledge as to who that is. "i'm not some mind reader, oracle. that does not give me any more clarity as to who that is." damian rolled his eyes through his domino mask. "who is arachne?" damian wanted to know who that is and why hasn't he heard of that arachne person before.

"i don't know what else to tell you, robin. arachne's already handling the situation. and no, i don't know who that is. they've just been popping up recently, doing some of your job." babs explained "i only got their name because that's what the internet has been calling them. if i were you, i should thank them. at least, they're helping." she added, trying not to piss damian off any more than he already is.

damian let out a frustrated sigh, dropping his head down in annoyance before lifting it back up. "i'm still coming over to that alley." he said before shooting his grappling hook and swinging it across buildings to get to that alley.

you were already on your way home, swinging from building to building, when you heard a scream from one of those dark alleys from the shadiest parts of town. you let out an exhausted groan before deciding on checking what that was. just when you thought you were done with your 'patrol', the crimes keep on coming.

"seriously, dude? robbing people is so 2010s. gotta up your game, man." you said when you landed behind the man with the ski mask, trying to rob some girl that probably just got out of her shift, cornering her so she wouldn't run. the man turned around his head when he heard your voice. "mind your business." he snapped before turning back around to face the girl.

you let out a dramatic sigh before shooting out a web to the man's wrist. causing him to turn around and face you, you pulled him away from the girl, giving her access to run away from him as soon as there was space. "you bi—" the man was about to scream when you shot another web to his mouth. "let's not start cursing here." you smirked underneath your mask to which the man couldn't see but can hear it through your voice. he took the web off his mouth with his other hand and pulled his wrist away from your grip before throwing a punch at you. luckily, you were able to dodge the hit and shot up another wed again to both his hands together, as if making a makeshift handcuff. the man thought he could make a run for it but you already shot another web to his legs, making him fall down face flat on the ground.

you used your foot to gently turn him around so his back was on the ground. as soon as he was face up, he glared at you. "okay, don't look at me like that. i just helped you get your face off that dirty floor." you said as you crossed your arms as you look down on the man. "i was gonna to help you sit up but clearly you don't want to. i get it." you added before ultimately deciding on actually helping him sit up. "who even are you? you're clearly not one of them." the man spit out as you made him sit, his back up against the grimey wall of the alley. "you don't look like any of those bats." he observed your suit, noting that it didn't have any of the bat symbols but instead it was a black suit with a spiderweb design on it and a spider symbol in the middle of your chest.

"great observation. you should be a detective." you snorted as you stand back up after helping him, dusting your hands off from the filth from the ground. "haven't you heard? the internet's been calling me arachne." you continued. "well, that should do it. you should probably just... sit here for a while. uhh... think about what you've done?" you said, sounding unsure on what to do next. you weren't really used to this vigilante life so you don't really know what happens next. do you call the cops or do they just appear and do the rest?

just when you were about to open your mouth again, you heard a soft thumped from one of the fire escapes from the buildings. you look up to see it was a shadow, it doesn't look like batman, seeing as it was a bit shorter than the dark knight but you can tell it was one of his people, judging by the cape and the stealthy behavior. "okay, stay there." you said before shooting up a web and swinging towards the fire escape. "hey! what am i supposed to do? get me out of here!" the man tried to yell at you but you were already focused on the figure.

"hey, i already took care of the rob—" "who the hell are you?" you were about to explain when he suddenly cut you off. now that you were near the figure, you began to realize that it's robin, the boy wonder. he looks around your age perhaps? you always thought that batman's sidekick would be much nicer or at least less rude than him but you guessed wrong. "okay, rude. i was talking. i'm arachne." you retorted with your arms crossed. you then pointed at the man that was still webbed up by you, sitting on the ground, waiting for you to let him go. "i also did your job, by the way. see? As I was sayi—" "i don't need you doing my job." damian interrupted you again, his voice frustrated. "you interrupt me one more time, i'm going to web your mouth." you warned him but you can still feel the glare from his mask.

"just trying to help, alright?" you put your hands up in mock surrender. "we don't need your help." he barked back at you, you can't help but let out a snort to which irritated him more. "you think this is funny?" robin looked at you as if his glare alone could put you 6 feet below the ground. you shook your hand as you tried to cover up your chuckle. "nope, absolutely not. i apologize, robin." you grinned through your mask, the sarcasm evident from your voice. "okay, with that. i think i'm going to leave mr. criminal at your hands. bye, mr. criminal!" you yelled down at the man still tied up by your webbing. you then turned to face the masked boy and shot up a web at a nearby lamppost. "see you, boy wonder." you said before swinging away.

damian watched as your your figure disappeared into the night before looking down at the man. he let out a sigh of irritation and pressed a finger to his earpiece to talk to oracle.

"find me everything you can about this arachne girl."

god, you were getting on his nerves.

10 Non-Lethal Injuries to Add Pain to Your Writing

New Part: 10 Lethal Injury Ideas

If you need a simple way to make your characters feel pain, here are some ideas:

1. Sprained Ankle

A common injury that can severely limit mobility. This is useful because your characters will have to experience a mild struggle and adapt their plans to their new lack of mobiliy. Perfect to add tension to a chase scene.

2. Rib Contusion

A painful bruise on the ribs can make breathing difficult, helping you sneak in those ragged wheezes during a fight scene. Could also be used for something sport-related! It's impactful enough to leave a lingering pain but not enough to hinder their overall movement.

3. Concussions

This common brain injury can lead to confusion, dizziness, and mood swings, affecting a character’s judgment heavily. It can also cause mild amnesia.

I enjoy using concussions when you need another character to subtly take over the fight/scene, it's an easy way to switch POVs. You could also use it if you need a 'cute' recovery moment with A and B.

4. Fractured Finger

A broken finger can complicate tasks that require fine motor skills. This would be perfect for characters like artists, writers, etc. Or, a fighter who brushes it off as nothing till they try to throw a punch and are hit with pain.

5. Road Rash

Road rash is an abrasion caused by friction. Aka scraping skin. The raw, painful sting resulting from a fall can be a quick but effective way to add pain to your writing. Tip: it's great if you need a mild injury for a child.

6. Shoulder Dislocation

This injury can be excruciating and often leads to an inability to use one arm, forcing characters to confront their limitations while adding urgency to their situation. Good for torture scenes.

7. Deep Laceration

A deep laceration is a cut that requires stitches. As someone who got stitches as a kid, they really aren't that bad! A 2-3 inch wound (in length) provides just enough pain and blood to add that dramatic flair to your writing while not severely deterring your character.

This is also a great wound to look back on since it often scars. Note: the deeper and wider the cut the worse your character's condition. Don't give them a 5 inch deep gash and call that mild.

8. Burns

Whether from fire, chemicals, or hot surfaces, burns can cause intense suffering and lingering trauma. Like the previous injury, the lasting physical and emotional trauma of a burn is a great wound for characters to look back on.

9. Pulled Muscle

This can create ongoing pain and restrict movement, offering a window to force your character to lean on another. Note: I personally use muscle related injuries when I want to focus more on the pain and sprains to focus on a lack of mobility.

10. Tendonitis

Inflammation of a tendon can cause chronic pain and limit a character's ability to perform tasks they usually take for granted. When exploring tendonitis make sure you research well as this can easily turn into a more severe injury.

For the writers struggling to rid themselves of the classic ‘said’. Some are repeated in different categories since they fit multiple ones (but those are counted once so it adds up to 100 new words).

Yes I understand that said is often good enough, but sometimes you WANT to draw attention to how the character is speaking. If you think adding an action/movement to your dialogue is 'good enough' hate to break it to you but that ruins immersion much more than a casual 'mumbled'. And for the last time: this is just a resource list, CALM DOWN. Hope that covers all the annoyingly redundant replies :)
