i have a roommate who has never had to pay a bill in their life and has daddy's credit card on hand at all times. literally orders doordash twice a day. no i'm not kidding. they LOVE setting the AC to 72 at random points of the day when it absolutely does not need to be.

the house is poorly insulated

in california, there is a concept known as "peak hours." any power consumed during peak hours (often calculated based on the temperature and behavior of those in your area) costs more per kW you use. a similar concept exists in many places, but this is what we call it here.
power consumption also becomes more expensive the more kW you've used throughout the month. the first amount is 10c/kW, then 21c/kW, etc etc.

okay but actually the way ive managed to have this many altars across three different moves and almost a decade of workings is as follows
1. not every altar needs to be a working altar
in fact, i only have one bigger working altar and the rest are symbolic, to give space for these gods to exist alongside me
2. altars can share space
i don't even know what some people are talking about with some gods "disliking" being grouped together, because honestly i have several "unusual" pairs of gods together, like odin/loki, hermes/artemis, at one point hekate/athena, etc.
i do this purely to save space, and because the items i dedicate to each altar are inherently Not interchangeable, and boundaries between them already exist in the fact that i know they're different gods, and would never contlate them (unless engaging in syncretism, like with hermanubis)
3. if i stop connecting with a deity as much, i downsize or move their altar
if they don't like that then some apologies may be in order, but i have a lot of deities moving in and out of my practice at any one time, and they know it's not permanent. i love all the gods, no matter if they have a physical altar or not, and i make that very clear to them through words and dedications.
at the end of the day, though, a Lot of viable space is taken up by my altars, and that's just what im happy with. to me, my altars are not only holy, but beautiful, and im not afraid to say they make great witchy decor. plus, it scares off people who think crystals or witchcraft=demon worship
Explaining the racism and racist stereotypes at the root of the "situation" with Willow/Salixsociety.
Alright. So quite a few of you have been in my inbox asking for clarification for two months now. You want to know about the interaction with salixsociety (you can read my "context post" here), about the dishonest posts they made in their own discord server following (which I posted here), and the conversations about BIPOC and academic racism that came from the two aforementioned incidents. I had been hopeful that I wouldn't have to make this post and that salixsociety would, instead, address their behavior, retract their racist lies, and take accountability, but that hasn't happened yet, and, as it's already been two months and about 1/3 of my inbox is now dedicated to this or related matters, I accept that it's time to sit down and make a post explaining the racism at the root of what happened with salixsociety.
I want to preface this by saying that my initial (and only) interaction with salixsociety did not come from a place of judgment for the terms they were using. Rather, I simply wished to express to them the impacts that such terms (the terms were "exotic," "ethnic," and "racial" being used to refer to POC and their cultures) can have on POC readers and to give them some insight into the perspectives of those potential readers. I never react immediately with judgement when it comes to the use of such terms because I am well aware that there are many people who simply do not know that those terms are harmful and racist, and I know that someone may use them without having the intention to do any harm or to other anyone. That's the sole reason I responded to Willow's request for peer review and feedback on an essay of theirs that they had posted in a server we were both in.
I'm going to touch on the issues one-by-one with their response and their behavior that follows.
1. Assuming authority over People of Color when speaking about racism:
When a white person takes it upon themselves to speak down to people of color about racism, it's incredibly disrespectful. Racism is something that people of color live with every day. To have a white person respond to the suggestion that they not use certain terms with a lengthy explanation about how racism works (per their perception), what racism is, and how "we" have to interact and engage with racism to "dismantle it" (per the white person's opinion and personal preferences) touches on a few different issues.
I'm in no way saying that it's racist for a white person to speak about racism to a person of color. The problem comes with the fact that salixsociety assumed authority in such an exchange. Their response sought to "educate" and "inform" a person of color on racism, and to explain why that person of color was "misguided" in their opinion.
The self-appointed role of educator and authority that salixsociety utilizes relies on and reinforces harmful, racist power dynamics, and also, in this particular situation, seeks to diminish the voice and view of POC and to dictate or "police" their opinions and responses to racism and racist terminology. Furthermore, in regard to this specific interaction, salixsociety positioned the white person's self-proclaimed "academic" interest in speaking and writing about institutionalized racism as being of greater value and a more reliable resource than the lived experience of people of color and the experiences and opinions of POC scholars and educators.
2. Calling People of Color "misguided" for expressing their opinions on the use harmful terminology:
I've addressed previously the issues with using terms like exotic and ethnic to refer to people of color and their cultural customs (you can read my explanations here and here), but I'll briefly revisit those terms and explain why they were addressed. When one uses the terms ethnic, exotic, or racial to refer to people of color, one is centering whiteness as a default norm and everything else as "other." This is racial othering and it is harmful and racist.
To address the issue of salixsociety's response to a person of color expressing concern about the use of such terms by telling POC they are, in fact, "misguided," I will first and foremost say that it is not appropriate for a white person to tell a person of color that they are "misguided" when it comes to matters that impact the comfort and safety of people of color. Doing so diminishes the lived experience of that person of color and disregards their opinion entirely.
If people of color express discomfort with terms and phrases, their perspectives should be respected. Dismissing their feelings as βmisguidedβ suggests that their lived experience doesnβt matter and that their opinion and the discomfort or pain that they feel at hearing such terms doesn't matter.
Furthermore, when a white person tells a person of color theyβre βmisguidedβ for having a certain viewpoint, they are assuming and asserting authorityΒ over POC identity and experience, invalidating POC feelings, and reinforcing harmful, racist power imbalancesΒ by asserting that the white person knows better. This behavior is an example ofΒ racial gaslighting, which is when the dominant group (in this case, white people) or a member of the dominant group dismisses or undermines the experiences of marginalized people.
So, is this racist? Yes. The interaction was racist because it dismissed the person of colorβs feelings and experiences, it prioritized the opinion of a white person and the white perspective about harmful, racist terminology over the person of color's opinion and experience, and it reinforced racist power imbalances.
3. Painting People of Color as being of inferior intelligence:
In salixsociety's dishonest post they made on their server immediately following our interaction, they made several extremely offensive and harmful claims that rely on racist stereotypes, one of the most egregious and obvious being the assertion of Willow/salixsociety's superior intelligence and education over the person of color they were speaking about.
Salixsociety knew absolutely nothing about me, the person they are speaking about, aside from the fact that I am not white, that I am a person of color, that I am biracial Black. Therefore, their assumption that they are of superior intelligence and are better educated than me is based purely on the only thing they know about me, my racial identity. Asserting that you are ofΒ superior intelligenceΒ to people of color solely because of your race is a clear example ofΒ racism.
The assumption of my inferior intelligence and their need to "meet you where you're at" in speaking to me relies on racist, white supremacist, and colonial ideologies and practices that have been used for centuries to justify the oppression, enslavement, and discrimination of people of color. Salixsociety's assertions of their perceived superior intelligence reinforces and echoes those ideologies, while imposing a harmful racial hierarchy.
This is a very blatant example of racism.
4. Painting Black people as aggressive and angry:
I'm sure this is an example of racism we're all familiar with, but it deserves attention nonetheless.
When a white person spreads dangerous lies about a Black person, and those lies depict the Black person as being aggressive and angry, the white person is perpetuating racist stereotypes that have been used to criminalize Black people, to dehumanize Black people, and to justify things like segregation, police brutality, incarceration of Black people, enslavement of Black people, and, yes, violence against Black people. One cannot ignore the fact that Black people have been lynched due to such lies being spread.
Salixsociety making claims of being "met with aggression" and "fast-paced angered retorts," and of being "attacked," they are engaging with and perpetuating the stereotype of Black people being dangerous, threatening, and aggressive, and are perpetuating, in this particular case, the stereotype of the angry Black woman. They paint themselves as a victim of aggressive behavior that they never experienced, seemingly in hopes to garner sympathy or incite an emotional response from their followers.
These are but four examples of the harmful and damaging racism displayed in just these two incidents. I'm writing this post to make it clearly known that there is undeniably racism at the root of this matter, and that such racism has harmful, negative impacts on people of color not just in our community but everywhere. I cannot and will not sit idly by and allow the narrative to be painted that this had nothing to do with racism, and I cannot and will not pretend that this behavior is not racist.
I was working on this post back about a month ago and then some shit happened and I had to put it on the back burner for a bit. In lieu of running out of projects to work on, I picked this back up and finally finished it. Hopefully it's accurate, sometimes I feel like I go to one source and it says one thing, and another will say something entirely different.

HOUSE CONSTRUCTION METHODS:
PORPHYRY: The Medium Coeli and Ascendant are calculated first, with the Imum Coeli and Descendant being 180 degrees across from them. The remaining houses are divided equally between these two lines. This means each house may be different sizes.
WHOLE SIGNS: The first house is always your Ascendant sign, and each sign that follows your ascendant will be your second, third, etc. Every house is the same size (30 degrees).
PLACIDUS: A much more complex system, the Placidus houses are decided by measurements calculated with your location and time of birth. Your Ascendant will always be the cusp of your first house, and, moving clockwise, the next cusp will be marked after two hours. This continues until the seventh house, where the remaining six houses will be extended as needed to make up the remaining space. The further from the equator you live, the more uneven your houses. Sign interceptions and doubles are only possible with this system.
As a beginner, I have been recommended to use the Whole Signs method, since itβs a lot easier to interpret. Placidus is wholly the most popular method nowadays, though.
SIGN INTERCEPTIONS: Only occurs in the Placidus system. When a sign has no house cusps present in it. Always occurs in opposing pairs. Aspects of yourself that are blocked or underdeveloped.

Hi everyone! After a much longer wait than I initially intended, I have finally finished my book on herb associations, and have uploaded a PDF version to both ko-fi and Google Drive. I decided to create this project after finding myself largely dissatisfied by the information available on the mass market--often being Wicca leaning or at least heavily influenced. I decided I wanted to create a (mostly) non-denominational, secular, baneful magic friendly resource guide. Because I largely sourced from other practitioners or the internet, I wanted to provide this for free, as the information is not inherently my intellectual property. The reason why I do have a paid version is purely for the effort I went through, and only if you feel like supporting me.

creating an altar to yourself: an exercise in manifestation and passive control
recently my best friend told me about a change he made to his personal practice that completely revolutionized the way he felt fortune flowed for him. i've seen people talk about creating an egregore of themselves or their alter ego, but this approach is uniquely secular and occurred completely detached from this online space.
and what was it he did? well, he created an altar to himself.
and i know what that sounds like, but hear me out. this isn't so much an altar of worship or reverence--at least not in the way we think about those things--it's a passive spell that runs in the background, an act of self-care for his past self, boosting his self-confidence for his current self, and manifesting the person he wants to become.
WHAT IS AN ALTAR TO THE SELF?
This temple can be created from a very wide variety of items, but most often includes things that are meaningful or attractive to the person. For me, this includes crystals, trinkets, bones, flowers and herbs, pictures or drawings, sigils, and salt or ash. My friend also has a little statue that represents him, self-affirmations, and a devotional jar of beads in his.
I was introduced to this idea as not just something to help improve my self-confidence, but also as a way of shaping my future self. Each crystal will have its own meaning or trait that I'm is hoping to embody, and I can move them closer or further away depending on what I need more in the moment.
And even if you didn't care for a spell like this, from a psychology standpoint, this absolutely seems like it could be a productive exercise--especially if you're a more visual person.
HOW TO MAKE THE ALTAR
For this I'll introduce two different methods, one that I employed, and one that my friend employed.
My method:
Start with your favorite color(s) and maybe even an aesthetic (like cottage-core, dark academia, etc.)
Choose items that represent those colors or aesthetics, for me this would be green, pink, or purple crystals, naturey trinkets, and drawings that combine the two
Include things of great importance to you, even if they don't fit in the aesthetic, and try to make them look right
Arrange everything in a visually appealing way (I'll give some examples of this later)
But what my friend did was kind of the opposite, building the altar from the top down with things that were important to him, and just making it look good from there.
You've probably noticed that I make a big deal about the visual appearance of this altar, which is on purpose. I believe that it is of great importance this altar is appealing to you, since it's supposed to represent you, and it's supposed to represent your interests. If you don't really care as much about things being artistic or aesthetic, that's okay! As long as you can look at it and go, "Yeah, that's the vibe, that's what I want for myself," then you've done it right.
You can also add things like sigils, salt, or ash for an added layer of protection or a "boost" to the magic aspect, which I've added to mine. I also really like bones and don't have anywhere else to put them, so I add those, and I'll throw in some lavender to the salt since that's my favorite herb to use in workings.
WHY CREATE AN ALTAR?
Have you ever felt tired of being subservient to the whims of some external force, of waiting for things to happen rather than getting to decide that for yourself? If you do, this might be for you.
And it's not that this is supposed to snub or push aside worship of actual deities (I mean it can but it doesn't have to), but add to it. Think about it, most of us already have a self-care routine, something sacred to us, that we may even dedicate to our gods. All this altar is meant to do is add to that, to create a holiness to self-love and self-care.
The ultimate purpose of this exercise is to manifest the things you want in life, to design your future self, and combat the helplessness many of us feel when things start to change. It's meant to feed your energy, to form a conduit between you and something physical (which is helpful for those of us that dissociate often).
It is not meant to feed some heretical "fuck you" to the gods or the universe, rather give these forces a framework or "checklist" of things you want. At the end of the day, this is more similar to a spell than making yourself a deity that you want other people to worship.
