Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna, 1914
Hi, long time no see!! I haven't posted in like a year because of my health, which still isn't great but is at least slightly improved from last year.
This is my first colorization ever and there are a LOT of mistakes but I'm relatively happy with it since it's my first one. I didn't spend as much time on it as I should have since I was only testing stuff out (I still spent like 5 hours on it though lol) so hopefully my next one will be better.
In other news, I've also started scanning my large history photo collection and I hope to start posting some of the scans on here soon. The one I'm most excited to scan is a cdv I bought of Victoria, Princess Royal that has a photo of her I've only ever seen in low quality!

this is your periodic reminder that for all the artifacts and errors and "tells" one could possibly list, the only reliable way to actually determine if an image is ai generated is to investigate the source. it is becoming increasingly common for "fake classical paintings" to circulate around curative aesthetic blogs, and everyone should be using this as an opportunity to not only exercise their investigative skills but also appreciate art more in general. you're all checking out the artists you reblog, right? 🫣
so what are some signs to look for? let's use this very good example.

"Duck egg blue silk evening dress from the late 1810s. This exquisite example with its fuller skirt shape and elaborate trimmings reflects a move away from the neo-classical influences of the previous decade towards the more romantic tastes of the 1820s. Decorated with all kinds of delightful details, we can’t get enough of those cream satin bands above the hem and how they end as graduated tabs inside loops of stunning cream rouleaux."

Journal des Demoiselles, July 1891

A French writer recalls meeting the Romanov sisters
In 1916, Amelie de Nery, a French journalist and writer, was invited to have a private audience with Tsarina Alexandra. During this meeting, she was introduced to the four Grand Duchesses by the Tsarina, who:
With a charming smile she took my hand and told me she was very happy to receive a representative of the women of France, who, like their sisters in Russia, had so bravely borne their burden of anxiety during this cruel war. 'Let me introduce you to my daughters,' she said as soon as I thanked her for granting me an audience. 'This is Tatiana.' Grand Duchess Tatiana also shook hands with me and said she was very much interested in meeting a woman journalist for the first time. She is a beautiful girl, with big blue eyes, full of life, illuminating her fair, young face. At this moment the door opened and a young girl, also in the garb of a sister of mercy, entered the room. 'And here is Olga, my little French daughter' said the czarina. Grand duchess Olga is no less beautiful and charming than her younger sister, but she is more calm and there is something of the serenity of the mystic about her. As the czarina referred to her stay in Paris, it seemed to me as if a dreamy expression came into the daughter's dark soulful eyes. ‘Colonel de Vitchkowsky will introduce you to my two other daughters,' said the czarina, as she parted from me to take up her duties in the operating room; and once more I felt the firm grip of her hand. The two little grand duchesses, Marie and Anastasia, were in the convalescent ward. I found that both, wearing plain white dresses and red hats, standing close to an officer who, seated on the window sill, was playing the balalaika. They both shook hands with me and the music went on.

UPDATE --
The Fort Wayne News published more of the original extract, that goes into more detail on Olga:
...As the czarina referred to her stay in Paris It seemed to me as if a dreamy expression came into the daughter's dark soulful eyes. Was she perhaps thinking of Paris, as she saw it decked in colors and flowers in her honor and of the big doll which the president of the republic gave her, and in return receiving a hearty kiss given with the impulsiveness of an unspoiled child? Did she perhaps hear once more the cheers of the people of Paris whose hearts she immediately captivated by her childish beauty and her charming smile?
