“  don't  i  always  ?  ”  sydney  dramatically  rolls  their  eyes,  anticipation  building  as  they  watch  lily  attempt  to  figure  out  whatever's  inside  with  a  little  shake.  there's  a  glint  of  mischief  in  their  eyes  when  it's  not  immediately  obvious.   “  with  the  way  you  look  in  that  thing,  i'd  vote  you  in  office  and  hypnotize  everyone  else  to  do  the  same.  ”   they  chuckle  lightly,  relishing  in  the  feeling  of  gift-giving.  maybe  she  ought  to  do  it  more  often,  she  thinks.  “  you  know,  i've  always  wanted  to  be  an  elf  on  the  shelf.  god,  that  must  be  so  exciting,  i'm  infinitely  jealous  !  they'd  be  so  fun  to  gossip  with  too,  imagine  the  ridiculous  amount  of  tea.  ”  it  would  definitely  satisfy  their  need  to  know  everything  happening  anywhere  at  all  times.  “  no,  i'm  glad  you  see  it  too…  i  would  make  bank  if  i  started  a  custom  ornaments  business  but  then  we  wouldn't  be  the  only  two  with  these  so,  i  think  we'll  leave  it  there.  –  i  also  think  if  someone  ever  asks  for  context,  you  should  just  stare  at  them  until  they're  uncomfortable  enough  to  change  subjects.  ”

confusion  contorts  elliot's  face  as  he  turns  to  isabela,  eyes  narrowing  as  he  attempts  to  make  sense  of  whatever  she's  holding.  it  takes  him  a  minute,  then  two  more,  before  he  decidedly  says,  “  aren't  most  things  shoved  into  a  drawer  eventually  ?  ”  unsure  if  his  answer  is  satisfactory  enough.  for  one  thing,  it  definitely  does  not  inspire  confidence.

“  snowflake  chic  !  ”  sydney  is  obviously  very  excited,  more  than  they  ought  to  be  for  someone  hardly  talented  at  face  painting.  though  they've  got  a  vision  in  sight,  how  well  it  translates  remains  to  be  seen.  “  the  gems…  they're  definitely  speaking  to  me.  ooh  and  glitter  !  do  not  hate  me  for  how  long  it'll  take  you  to  get  rid  of  it  later  tonight.  ”

“  oh,  you're  brilliant  !  the  entire  crew  for  christmas,  why  the  hell  not  ?  ”  they  grin,  a  slight  shrug  of  their  shoulders  following.  “  i  think  we'd  have  a  lot  of  angry  parents  on  our  hands  though,  you  think  you  can  handle  them  ?  ”  briefly  glances  toward  the  tree  before  eyes  settle  back  on  henry.  “  it's  sabotage.  i've  been  set  up  this  year,  i  swear  it,  hen.  ” 

“Shit, Syd. The fuck did you do this time?” Lenny could only laugh, looking at the horrified children. Lennon wasn’t one for the holidays, for a whole host of reasons… but terrorizing children? That was a new one. Then again, this was the most entertaining thing that had happened at the festival so far, so Lenny would roll with Sydney’s punches. “Count me in, man.”

“  how  was  i  supposed  to  know  my  honesty  would  go  unappreciated  ?  ”  sydney  questions  innocently,  a  roll  of  their  eyes  as  they  step  away,  gesturing  for  lenny  to  follow.  “  maybe  i  ruined  this  christmas  but  i  think  i  did  them  a  favor  next  year,  right  ?  ”

“  isn't  everything  ?  ”  elliot  questions,  amusement  evident  in  his  tone  as  he  reasses  the  pieces  in  front  of  him.  “  what,  the  glory  of  being  the  winner  isn't  enough  for  you  ?  how  greedy.  ”  teases,  though  if  there  isn't  an  actual  competition,  no  one  said  they  couldn't  have  their  own.  “  at  the  very  least,  i'd  say  loser  gets  dinner.  and  if  you  win,  you  get  to  pick  whatever  you  want.  how  about  that  ?  ”

“maybe  i'll  do  a  whole  sydney - inspired  collection.”  it  wasn't  beyond  the  realm  of  possibility.  before,  safiya  had  been  known  to  use  her  friends  as  muses  when  it  came  to  new  projects.  the  bartender  before  her  was  full  of  intrigue  —  their  dark  hair,  tattoos,  piercings.  maybe  it  would  finally  be  an  excuse  to  crack  out  the  shimmering  silver  glaze  that  she  had  been  saving  for  a  special  occasion.  “you  don't  annoyingly  hover.  you're  a  friend,  and  friends  get  friend  privilege.  some  people  just  come  in  here  to  stave  off  the  cold,  look  at  my  art  and  hum  with  interest  but  then  disappear  without  even  taking  a  business  card.  showing  interest  is  sometimes  worth  more  than  leaving  with  one  of  my  pieces,”  although  the  padding  that  a  sale  gave  her  purse  was  always  welcome,  of  course.  she  led  sydney  into  the  kiln  room.  within  it  was  a  sauna - like  warmth,  and  she  opened  the  hatch  to  pull  out  a  plate  full  of  small,  intricately  painted  clay  kittens that had just finished firing.  “each  one  is  a  different  fruit.”

“  and  i'll  come  knocking  for  royalties  when  it  sells  out  in  one  day.  ”  sydney  jokes,  though  if  safiya  were  to  actually  make  any  piece  inspired  by  sydney,  they'd  end  up  getting  a  glass  display  just  to  put  it  in  the  middle  of  their  apartment.  along  with  bringing  it  up  every  chance  possible  –  bragging  rights  for  eternity  with  that  one.  “  i  love  friend  privilege  !  hey,  i  could  mysteriously  drop  off  your  business  cards  around  town.  an  ‘in-your-face’  moment  for  those  assholes  and  it  definitely  works  !  like  one  time,  i  saw  an  ad  on  my  way  back  into  town  for  chili's  and  i  turned  back  around  just  to  go.  it  hadn't  even  crossed  my  mind  all  week  and  one  reminder  was  all  it  took.  ”  leaves  out  the  fact  that  sydney  is  easily  influenced,  a  gold  mine  for  advertisers.  sydney  follows  safiya  into  the  kiln  room,  a  glint  in  their  eyes  as  their  gaze  falls  on  the  clay  kittens.  “  shut  the  fuck  up  !  i  need  them  all.  ”

sydney  glances  at  kara's  christmas  bauble,  momentarily  stunned  at  the  way  it  looks  well  crafted  and  then  they  glance  at  their  own.  “  mine  ?  ”  she  scoffs,  turning  it  over  in  their  paint  smudged  hands.  “  if  twenty-nineteen  tie  dye  was  the  theme,  i  think  i  nailed  it.  ”  should've  known  it  was  a  bad  idea  to  attempt  writing  in  cursive.  “  wanna  trade  ?  ”

bite   of   a   pretzel   ,   casual   shrug   ,   “   sure   ,   why   not   ?   ”   gaze   darts   over   to   sydney   ,   waiting   for   a   reaction   .   “   i've   got   nothing   against   baldies   .   might   be   hot   ,   “   they   continue   on   ,   watching   as   the   balding   figure   disappears   down   the   sidewalk   .   ”   but   yeah   no   — i'm   all   for   the   gym   takedown   .   i   could   fake   an   injury   on   one   of   their   machines   and   really   cause   a   stir   .   “   would   that   require   getting   a   membership   ?   ”   actually   ,   i   think   the   reviews   are   a   stronger   lead   .   maybe   we   should   just   start   asking   people   to   join   our   cause   .   there's   plenty   of   people   down   there   who   might   be   interested   in   partaking   in   their   evil   side   today   .   " 

“   they   have   a   bit   of   a   dangerous   aura,   wouldn't   you   agree   ?   ”   sydney   questions,   momentarily   getting   lost   in   thought   while   a   pretzel   lingers   between   their   lips.   “   if   you   started   balding,   would   you   just   shave   your   head   ?   ”   they're   only   pulled   out   of   their   thoughts   at   the   mention   of   the   gym   takedown,   grin   spreading   wider   as   their   eyes   flicker   to   margaret.   “   holy   shit,   yes.   with   their   manners,   i   don't   think   they'd   handle   it   well   either…   all   we'd   need   to   do   is   capture   it   on   camera   and   i   mean,   i   guess   i'd   be   hard   to   disguise   but   i   could   try   ?   ”   sydney   would   find   a   way   to   turn   a   gym   takedown   into   an   excuse   for   playing   dress   up.   “   you   think   ?   i   mean…   even   if   they   don't   have   an   evil   side,   i   bet   we   could   find   some   gym   haters   to   support   our   cause.   fuck   the   gym   !   ”
