The Downlow on Hurricane Parties
Okay *presses hands together*Iâve been seeing a shit ton of posts about these and no actual explanations about How Living In a Hurricane Zone actually fucking works. Like - socially.Â
Reciepts:Â I was made homeless by 2 hurricanes in my life - once at 8 and again at 17. I have also ridden out more hurricanes than I can remember. I grew up in Hurricane Alley in florida and I have a tshirt from my senior year that says I Survived Hurricane High School because our senior year was so fucked by Hurricane Ivan no less than a 1/3rd of the student body was displaced. Aside from my parents divorce itâs probably the single most impactful thing to ever happen to me.
So let me explain a thing to those of you who donât have hurricanes.
Thereâs a few types of hurricanes that make landfall on the continental US. There are REALLY BAD hurricanes - like Katrina and Harvey. Those are the ones where all you can do is Fucking Run.
But then? Thereâs the Less Bad Hurricanes. Those are insanely windy and full of rain and trees come down and shit gets bad but likeâŚmostly, you get through it by hunkering down - boarding up the windows with plywood or specially made hurricane shutters(actually a thing, we had them on my house) bring in everything you have outside your house and plying it up in your living room and then just waiting shit out. Wild right?
If you live in Hurricane Alley, you realize, hey, for a Less Bad Hurricane, higher ground is all I really need. That is still an evacuation, itâs just not a Fucking Run full evacuation. When you evacuate to higher ground you almost always end up at Someoneâs House and often, whoeverâs place you end up at is putting up 2+families and so are other people in that area because thatâs the Higher Ground.
Hereâs whatâs happens. The whole goddamn town shuts down. This is one of the few times capitalism comes to a grinding halt (unless you work at Waffle House. That motherfucker stays open until you pass Cat3 because theyâre more intrepid than any fucking US Marine) and the whole town shuts down. Thereâs power - until there isnât. Thereâs water - until there isnât.Â
And then?Â
Thereâs just you and the people youâre trapped in a house with for hours if not days.
What you end up with is a lot of people in one place, sharing their supplies of water and food because they have to - gathered in the ONE place that might have a generator - WHICH YOU CANNOT RUN ALL THE TIME ANYWAY, DONâT LISTEN TO ANYONE WHO TELLS YOU DIFFERENTLY - when the weather is wet and also 90+ degrees, because you gotta remember this only happens in the summer. Schools are closed so a lot of the time, people are trapped in small places with their kids who dont know each other that well and cannot go outside and play which is a nightmare because did I mention the electricity is down? Yeah, this is literally the start of a fucking horror movie.Â
Because on top of that, after a certain point, the sun is going to go down. You may have candles but not THAT many and you wanna save them so you canât read.
And what are you going to do with that time? Seriously, what? Fam you gotta TALK to each other to pass the time.
Plus? All the adults are fucking stressed out. Aside from the host, no one is in their own home and theyâre scared. They might pretend theyâre not but they are. They may not be scared for theyâre life but theyâre afraid for their property and their friends who didnât come with them and theyâre afraid for whatâs going to happen when that motherfucker makes landfall and and and.Â
You know what makes that experience easier (on the adults at least)? Alcohol (and weed if youâre in Florida where that shit is legal) and revelry and generally being playful, letting the kids play too, maybe getting a brightly colored cake that makes the whole experience less terrifying.Â
And lo, hurricane parties.Â
So yeah. Thatâs whatâs going on with hurricanes.
Thatâs whats going to keep going on with hurricanes as the climate crisis continues.
And if you try and guilt and shame people out of their coping mechanisms and survival tactics that scientists and survival experts have proven work (seriously, I went to a panel on how to survive an apocalypse and the first advice they gave was Throw A Party) then youâre just wrong. Stop harshing people and start being supportive. Things are only going to get worse as we move forward and trust me when I tell you, a good hurricane party can save sanity and lives.Â
OP, thank you?? sfm?????
about the only thing more irritating than outsiders being condescending about it is carpetbaggers thinking it really is just about fun and not coping.
Iâll have an official surgical date tomorrow and an info dumo for this
Something like "the care and keeping of you" but geared towards trans people would be an incredible resource given the main focus of trans healthcare being "here are some objective facts about what to expect on [t, e]" which are great early on but there's no "puberty will make you smell funny, JimBob, age 8"
vaginal hygiene & health - an introductory crash course
pass this on to spread knowledge whether you have one or not, #save-a-coochie
- the vagina is the tubular âinternalâ sex organ that some people have. - the âvulvaâ is the set of external sex organs that people with vaginas have. it includes (but not only):
pubic moundÂ
labia minora and majora (inner/outer âlipsâ)
clitoris and clitoral hoodÂ
vulval vestibule (found in between your labia minora)
urethra (where you urinate from)
vaginal opening
-vaginas naturally contain a balance of different bacterias. this bacteria protects the vagina from external bacteria and fungus, provides natural disinfectants and maintains a healthy vaginal pH of 3.5-4.5.
-vaginal pH varies from person to person, day to day, depending on your cycle, your diet and many other external factors,
-all vaginas have a scent. all of them. no two people smell exactly the same, and you shouldnât expect your vagina (or anyone elseâs) to smell fruity or floral.
- if your worried about your scent, you can place perfume or an essential oil to an area around your vulva but not on it. some places like between your thighs or on your lower stomach, for example,
-your body secretes natural fluids called discharge. discharge is how your vagina self cleanses. it is completely normal and vital to healthy vaginal function.
-discharge can vary in amount, color, texture and scent depending on your cycle. each person is different. if your discharge is unusual or abnormal to you and your unique body - visit a doctor if possible.
-abnormal discharge can be green, grey, very yellow, smelly, itchy, chunky, etc.
-abundant discharge can be annoying. you can remove excess discharge in your shower by inserting one clean finger into your vagina, moving it from one side to another and âscoopingâ the discharge out. repeat as needed. this reduces the amount of discharge found on your panties and in turn, reduces vaginal scent.
- dead skin cells and oil can build up between your clitoris and your clitoral hood, so itâs important to lift your hood up and rinse thoroughly so it doesnt harden.Â
-washing your âexternalâ vulvar areas such as your public mound and outer lips is okay, though some may find skin here more sensitive.
-donât douche. you may think it helps but it only masks any problems while causing more. douching throws of your flora, alters your PH and forces bacteria into your cervix.
-water and a soft, clean wash cloth is all you need to clean your vulvar areas that contain a mucous membrane. you do not need to wash these areas. applying soaps or cleaners to these areas removes of natural necessary lubricants and bacteria. this may cause irritation, inflammation, major discomfort and dryness. some amount of moistness should always be present.
-a vast majority of vaginal washes, even those touted as hypoallergenic, still contain dyes and fragrances which are known irritants. read the label.
-while Summerâs eve is a lesser of evils with a PH of 3.0 - 3.5 (still not quite correct), it is still a cleanser. vaginal washes are used to cleanse âbadâ bacteria from your vulva. they also wash away the âgoodâ bacteria needed to maintain a healthy balance.
-castile soaps (like Dr. Bronnerâs) has a pH of about 8.9. these are not suggested.
-never insert any cleansing agents into your vagina.
-the information above applies to any gels, deodorants, perfumed products and wipes, too. these can all disturb your natural balance.
-while they still pose a possible risk of irritation, unscented baby wipes are the lesser of evils regarding âfreshening upâ.
-pay attention to your irritants and triggers. different people, different reactions
-everyone has different stances and different methods that work for them. if you arenât experiencing vaginal discomfort or odd changes, you donât have to discontinue certain product use. i do, however, recommend a trial period of leaving these products alone due to their effects on your vagina.
-allow your vagina to breathe. keep too-tight clothing to a minimum. cotton panties are the best option next to not wearing any at all. rotate the washcloth and towels you use to clean and dry your vagina.
-urinating after masturbation or sex reduces the amount of bacteria in your urethra wiping âfront to backâ keeps rectal bacterial away from your vagina.
-naturally, food alters your vagina. balancing your diet in general and including things like pineapples, strawberries, yogurt, soy (the list goes on!) can influence your pH.
-beverages like water, cranberry juice and pineapple juice are also proven to improve vaginal health, and may even improve taste.
-adding a probiotic supplement can increase the amount of âgoodâ bacteria called lactobacillus-your vagina.
-the less ideal your vaginal balance/pH is, the more vulnerable you are to infections and STDs.
-when it comes to internet home remedies, your mileage my vary. try everything with caution and research thoroughly.
cheers! your vagina will thank you.
Please donât be an immature 12 year old and be like âew thatâs about a vagina Iâm not reblogging that thatâs gross!â It is literally a body part It needs to be kept healthy People with vaginas need to understand how to keep them healthy Just reblog
Does anyone have tips on shaving down there? My pubic hair makes my crotch really itchy so I tried shaving it and now my crotch itches even more ; - ;Â Â
Iâve heard conditioner and going with the hair grain works well Iâve been doing that method for quite awhile and this whole time Iâve had no problems and nothing ever gets itchy
â
But pH imbalance will fuck you up so make sure youâre taking good care of it!!!!!!
for non-intersex transgender women who now have vulvas & vaginas:
i have had mine for a little over 6 years now, and most of the above applies to us too. here are some differences though (in my experience)⌠i donât have a cervix to worry about getting bad bacteria into, but it is still important to clean things the right way. yeast infections are super uncomfortable. i think, in my experience, douching with warm water only is okay. i still use soaps and cleansers sometimes (hello, insecurity), and i still always consider them a bit risky.Â
i think that my vaginal canal and that of many other trans women is probably a bit more resilient to this sort of thing (no cervix, at least partially composed of scar tissue), but my sense is that the bacterial landscape inside my vagina and out onto my vulva are, naturally, intimately linked. so even if it doesnât cause problems for me in my vagina, my vulva is the one that often ends up taking the heat (which is sort of what the itching/inflammation feels like for meee).
the dead skin cells/oil thing is very real. check it out every once in a while (you will find the rate at which your bits develop this), and investigate yourself thoroughly because sometimes where skin connects to skin (like in the vestibule, etc), it does so in a way which creates a tiny wrinkle or fold which can end up collecting dead skin, etc. donât take this as advice because i have the impression that it might have its risks, but sometimes i will *very carefully* clean my vulva with a wet q-tip. gentle, yet precise.
also idk if this is a thing for cis women too, but the skin of my labia minora, and even majora to some extent (and where the minora connect to the vestibule) is very thin and delicate, so pulling at it too much (or even âover-handlingâ from trying to clean things in excess) can sometimes result in torn skin, which makes for irritation for a couple days. gotta be careful, even with your care!

I really want to have a conversation about the sexualization of the self with other trans people and/or my therapist but thatâs such a loaded conversation. Also, Iâm finding that anxiety about bits popping up and such seems common but ends well and doesnât spiral.Â
âscratch a transphobe and a misogynist bleedsâ

This is some scalding hot fucking tea and Iâm here for it.
Iâm coming at this from the perspective of having some pretty decent insurance. Dr. Avanessian herself is out of network for me but the hospital is in network. Dr. Avanessian (and Dr. Ting) do not seem to have up front charges and they handle it all back end. The hospital has an admissions fee and also fees for room and board which may or may not need to be paid at least partially up front.
A bit of a resource introduction
My name is Robyn and Iâm, as per the above blurb, seeking genital reconstruction surgery with Dr. Avanessian out of Mt. Sinai. I have a consult on the sixth after which, from what Iâve gathered by talking to other people, I will set a solid date for the operation itself (likely to be in September, though early October isnât out of the question). Iâm doing this for the purposes of a consolidated glossary of information that Iâve had to track down and which has caused a bit of anxiety.
