She listened and would only giggle a little at the idea that Hitler would be punishing all the wrong people for all the wrong reasons. Even though humanity had painted the Devil as exactly that, where he was sitting before her about to have a cup of coffee with her. She was pretty sure they had written a fiction novel about something like this onceâŚ
She warmed her suddenly cold hands against the ceramic mug and took a slow sip of her black coffee. She needed the bitterness to keep her from fainting or suddenly losing the balls to stay where she was. How many would have run from him right now? He had told her once he had broken his therapistâŚhe had shown her exactly what she had seen not that long ago.Â
âYour wings,â She repeated in a whisper. âI thought you lost them,â She tilted her head to the side remembering all the feathers at the scene, all the ones on the rooftop she had seen while coming down. âBut then Charlotte,â She tapped her fingers on her mug. By herself, she was putting the pieces together and simply staring at him right in his eyes while it all the missing ones fell into place.Â
âYour mother took her body, didnât she? AndâŚyou had saved her that day somehow on the pier? Bringing Charlotte back?â Her brows furrowed wondering just how the timeline would add up now that she knew. She wasnât entirely convinced that God had anything to do with what was going on, not yet at least. Everything seemed to well placed about their own choices and lost moments. They had been too scared to act on any of it because of reasons are only known to themselves.Â
She tried to bite back questions about Peirce, sheâd get down to that one when things would slowly start to add up to herself. The pain, the vengefulness he felt. It just seemed all out of their hands. Lucifer had such calmness to him when it came to what he was, what needed to be punished, right from wrong. What Devil had she pictured had been nothing like this, however, was this the true way things were supposed to be? He enjoyed doing this as much as she enjoyed taking the bad guys off the streets. At the end of the day, wasnât it the same thing they both wanted?
âI told you she wasnât my ex.â Lucifer teased when she asked about Charlotte. He watched her face, could see her putting it all together. The who and the how and the what, but the why would probably be as elusive to her as it was to him.
âAs for the events at the pier... yes, you have it mostly right. My Father had... banished my mother to Hell a very long time ago. Not exactly the healthiest relationship in all of creation, but there you have it. Long story short, she had planned to find her way back into Heaven, which would have been a terrible idea in the long run. Her and Father would have torn each other apart, and... I honestly donât know how that would affect humanity. So, I used a flaming sword to cut a hole in creation, giving her an empty universe and a fresh start.â Lucifer explained it all, knowing how it all sounded, but knowing sheâd believe him this time around, and that was a change. There would be no more odd looks, no more distrust, no more talk of metaphors.
âAnd my wings... yes. Iâd lost them, or rather, Maze cut them off. Then I burned them, and when I sent Mother away... somehow they came back. Iâm still trying to figure that one out, whether or not it was Fatherâs doing or my own.â Again, a hard why to explain, but eventually heâd find the answers, he was certain.
âIâd show them to you, but they do take up quite a bit of space. Perhaps the next time youâre at my place.â He said it almost hopefully, because truly he hoped there would be a next time she was at his.
