So...... does this mean sie was originally a binary woman and this part wasn't edited properly? That's not how traditional publishing is supposed to work. They're supposed to be more than one person reading this to catch things like this.

i NEED people to realise foreshadowing is. in fact. a literary device. and not a Bad Thing. the audience picking up on your hints is a Good Thing. because. it makes the story and it’s conclusion make sense. and some people will not see those but enjoy seeing them on a second read through. red herrings are one thing but if your novel consists of nothing but red herrings it’s not a coherent story it’s just a collection of paragraphs that don’t actually plausibly link to one another. you're not fighting with the audience you don’t look clever you look like you don’t know how basic fiction works. be vulnerable for once in your goddamn life and don't treat writing like a game to be won where the audience losing is a good thing.

Getting to the end of a story and going "THE CLUES WERE THERE THE WHOLE TIME!" is always joyous for me whether or not I picked up on the clues leading up

If I saw the clues and caught the hints then yes! I am clever and me and the author/creator/artist etc were in on it together the whole time!

If I didn't notice the clues or got fooled but can clearly see them in hindsight then "Ha! You won this time storyteller! I am delighted by this game we play!' and then I enjoy putting the pieces together afterwards and enjoying how clever it was. I feel like the creator respects me as an audience

If there is a "twist" that comes with 0 clues or foreshadowing at all I'm annoyed. I'm pissed off. I feel like I'm being condescended to and patronised. It's not clever or interesting and makes me annoyed I ended up caring about characters and plot points that ended up meaningless.

Because it's not that these stories don't have foreshadowing or plot clues. They just abandon it for a "surprising twist"

A story that pays off the clues is letting me into the fun and makes a participant in the story

A story that just gives me a "shock" but no pay off is telling me not to engage or get attached or care. So why would I watch?

Random plot twists that don't connect to anything in the story are not clever. If we don't see it coming because the writer didn't provide any clues, they aren't clever and it's totally unsatisfying (and I will NEVER read this writer again). These clues need not be lit up in neon with a parade of elephants and showgirls. But they need to be present

I'm a writer and am rarely surprised. Often, if I am surprised it's because the writer was a dumbass and included a "twist" that makes no sense (and therefore isn't really a twist, it's just random bullshit). If a writer genuinely surprises me, without being an absolute dumbass, I am FUCKING DELIGHTED! I will tell everyone I know to read the book/see the movie/watch the show.

Foreshadowing is the reward for paying attention. It's the story letting you in on the secret like a co-conspirator because you're the clever little audience member who has been picking up on the clues the writer has been setting up.

It even makes watching/reading again more worthwhile because if you didn't notice the foreshadowing the first time you have the joy of being able to notice the things you missed!

Hello and thank you for another pretty much perfect book! I have a kind of fussy question: I know the three Ancillary books are, officially, the Imperial Radch series. Is there an overarching series name that covers those three as well as the rest that fall within the same universe but not (necessarily) within Radch space? I know everyone seems to lump them under IR, and I've taken to considering the whole thing "the Imperial Radch Extended Universe," but I imagine that would make Anaander Mianaai altogether too pleased, like if the King of England found out some aliens called the entire Milky Way the Great British Empire Extended Galaxy.

Hah, I see what you mean, and you're right to say it! But I don't really have any other name for the "series" so far.

I know you talk a bit about pronunciations on the FAQ on your blog, but I didnt see anything about how you actually name people/places/things on your work?

So, honestly? I mostly use a random name generator. This one, in fact. I put in whatever parameters I want (do I want one of the Radchaai theophoric names that will begin with Ti- or Sei- ? do I want lots of vowels? Etc) and then hit refresh until I see something I like.

So are the chapter titles of Radiant Star the names of individual Images of Radiance? Like the traditional names of tarot cards? They definitely gave me that vibe, once I slowed down my reading and started noticing them. (Also: Really loved this book; kept telling my family "I have no idea where this is going and I'm totally psyched to find out" and now I have to wait for some of them to read it so I can go full metal comparative lit major on it with someone. It was lovely, thank you for writing it )

There was this one time I scratched up my cornea real bad and had to go to the hospital. Dealing with medical bureaucracy is always very frustrating to me, and that combined with the pain had me in a very bad mood. I was even crying.

I had to wait quite a while for the doctor to see me, but fortunately the nurse who was helping me had an excellent bedside manner and went out of her way to distract me. She expertly did this by getting me talking about books I'd read recently.

I went all in on criticizing the last book I'd read. I don't remember what it was, but I really hadn't liked it, and I denigrated it as "Misery Porn". And she was like "Hmm, that sounds interesting, tell me more". So I gave a general plot synopsis. As I was telling her that most of the characters were immigrant miners, she interrupted me to say "That's interesting, I didn't realize that there were mines in Missouri".

And at that moment time stopped for me and I realized that the entire time I'd been talking about the book, she'd been assuming I was talking about porn set in Missouri. I had just assumed that she had understood from context that when I said "Misery Porn", I meant "A story that is gratuitously depressing so that readers will think it's deeper than it really is".

Rather than being disappointed in our miscommunication, I was instead impressed with the level on non judgement she was showing me. Having a whole ass cheerful conversation about Missouri themed porn just to help a patient. I think about her all the time.

Question: Ok so like, Ilora is mentioned as washing her bare hands in front of the Temporal Location before opening the supposed Images of Radiance. Have I been misreading the whole time when I thought that Radchaai washed their hands with their gloves still on before religious observance? Is this like...a studied act to make her appear less aggressively Radchaai to the crowd? Or have the Radchaai Consorors, having been away from the Radch for so long in a place like Ooioiaa, become less fussed about wearing gloves?

Payment: Hybrid meme culture from the youth of Ooioiaa having grown up under 30 years of Radchaai control.

Oh, no, Radchaai do not wash their hands with their gloves still on! They take their gloves off, wash, dry their hands, and depending how traditionalist they are (or depending on local culture) they either make their religious observances gloveless, or they put on their Special Religion Gloves. I just...didn't specify that, because I didn't think it was germane to the story/ies. Sorry!

And yes, at least some percentage of Radchaai living near other cultures do become less fussed about gloves. Some go the other way, of course, I'm sure Governor Charak's doctor, for instance, is on the verge of wearing a second layer of gloves just to show everyone she's not uncivilized like they are.

That is up to the publisher, and unfortunately Orbit is a strong believer in the necessity of DRM, so, no, there won't be a DRM-free edition. Sorry! If it were up to me, there would be.
