Right, so when I’m stuck, I might decide to use what I call Hiding In Plain Sight: I think of a hidden message, and build my entire text around said message. It’s a good way to get The Brain™ thinking — restricting word choices makes you think of pretty cool workarounds and alternatives. It’s also just fun to have a paragraph that plays with its sentence structure, rather than having the same repetitive, monotonous tone.

Of course, fitting an idea around words (rather than words around an idea) is only useful when you don’t have a pressing idea you want to say. And of course, if you do have something to say, you can obviously just go ahead! But again, if you just have the compulsion to write without intent, I find this a pretty good way to come up with intent.

Where this idea does potentially of fall flat is that it produces really drawn-out texts. You kind of dance around the topic, with only one or two points being explored inside four paragraphs. Again, it’s just a method of coming up with ideas, not the only method.

But it’s all worth it in the end, because you can look back at your creation knowing you’ve hidden a nice little easter egg in some random corner, some hole in the middle of a sentence for people to find.
