Cast joining Michael Sheen in Welsh National Theatreβs new playΒ Owain and Henry confirmed
The full cast and creative team have been revealed for Gary Owenβs new play, Owain and Henry,Β led and co-directed by Michael Sheen.
The piece was revealed as part ofΒ Welsh National Theatreβs jam-packed first season.
Examining the 15th-century rebellion against the English crown by outlaw Owain GlyndΕ΅r, Sheen will star as the last Welsh-born Prince of Wales, coming up against King Henry IV in a battle that could lead to freedom for Wales and the end of England.
It has now been revealed that Linus Roache will take on the title role of King Henry IV.
They will be joined by BAFTA Cymru winner Rakie Ayola as Mared Ferch Dafydd, a noblewoman and Owainβs wife, with BAFTA Childrenβs Awards Performer Emily Burnett as their daughter Catrin Ferch Owain. WhatsOnStage Award nominee Sophie Melville will play mother turned warrior, Lois, while Ned Costello will play Hal, the heir to the English throne.
Also starring are Brendan Charleson as Percy, Martyn Ellis as Sir John Falstaff, Gruffudd Glyn as Bryn, Ian Hughes as Baron Reginald Grey, David Judge as Hotspur, Richard Lynch as Rhys, and James Wilbraham as Mortimer.
Completing the cast are Lizzie Caitlin Bennett, Beau Bradfield, Harrison Claxton, Caitlin Drake, Mirain Fflur, Orla Hardie, Aisha-May Hunte, Corey Mitchell, Jamie Morgan, Luke Rhodri and Joseph Tweedale.
Sheen, who is artistic director of Welsh National Theatre, will co-direct the play with Steffan Donnelly, artistic director and joint chief executive of Theatr Cymru, with associate director Hannah Noone.
Mab Gwalia, Sheenβs movement for change, is creating opportunities for Welsh artists through associate and assistant roles within the company.
The creative team is completed byΒ Matt Hellyer as associate set designer alongside set designer Jon Bausor, Cara Hood is lighting design associate alongside lighting designer Aideen Malone, Elin Steele is costume designer, Dyfan Jones composer and sound designer, Livi Wilmore is video design assistant alongside video designer Jack Phelan, Anthony Matesena is movement director, Rebecca Wilson is fight director assistant alongside fight and intimacy director Bethan Clarke, casting director is Hannah Marie Williams, voice director Nia Lynn, and Kate Ferris is executive producer.
Sheen commented: βTo stand alongside this extraordinary cast and to imagine the life, fire and humanity we will bring to the stage together is beyond thrilling.β
He added: βOwain and Henry brings two towering figures, two nations and two versions of history into the same room. It asks us to hold all that complexity: the politics and the poetry, the intimacy and the spectacle, the past and the questions it asks of us now. For years people have wondered why Wales hadnβt told this story on this scale. Thatβs exactly what weβre setting out to do, creating opportunities for Welsh artists in its telling.β
Owain and HenryΒ is a Welsh National Theatre co-production with Wales Millennium Centre. It will run in the Donald Gordon Theatre from 5 to 28 November.
hey so does the #ForTerry shit by finale defenders piss anyone else off? like the endless refrains of βthis was for terry! this is the ending he wanted! this was what he planned all along!β in addition to being a pointless argument itβs also exploiting a dead manβs name and reputation to distract from the reality that GO3 was a product of Neil Gaiman and two of his friends. it was right there in the end credits. three writers were listed for the teleplay and only Gaiman was listed for the television story. thatβs it!
like whose word are they taking for GO2/3 being from plot discussions for a never-materialized sequel to the book? Neil Gaiman?? Pathological liar and serial abuser Neil Gaiman?? give me a fucking break. as if his general character isnβt enough to make it clear he is not a trustworthy source, the man already lied through his teeth about S1 being the totality of show!omens and switched up the story to justify an obvious cash+attention grab. and some people are still taking his word that this is what he and Pratchett supposedly planned? without a shred of actual concrete evidence? i need them to expeditiously get a fucking grip
and quite frankly I donβt give a shit what anyone on the production team or from the Pratchett Estate has said on the matter. because to be blunt iβm sure it eases the discomfort of having helped produce a Gaiman creation post-2024 to focus on the other co-writer of the book and pretend it was for/inspired by him. as for whatever the Pratchett estate has said, shockingly enough being the executor of an estate does not grant you moral authority nor divine omniscience into a dead personβs thoughts. but i do think Pratchettβs whole βbulldoze my works-in-progress after I dieβ request sent a pretty fucking clear message that his estate ignored in favor of making money. and they got monkey pawβd by allowing Gaiman to continue writing for, and thereby forever tarnishing the legacy of, something that was at least 75% a Pratchett creation.
itβs whatever if people liked the finale but liking it AND spinning a narrative that obfuscates the ginormous rancid elephant in the room is just plain fucked up. like i get this is a βwhy were YOU at the devilβs sacrament situationβ but at a bare minimum i think being in fandom where the source materialβs creator did/does terrible things requires honesty and accountability about that fact, but apparently thatβs too much for some good omens fans. this is like the final boss of the internetβs misuse of Death of the Author as a way to ignore difficult issues and pretend a creatorβs opinions/biases/ideologies donβt influence their creations. turns out you donβt have to navigate complex moral dilemmas if you just distort reality and refuse to acknowledge said moral dilemmas! who knew!
and even if that were exactly the case, meaning this was the ending Terry wanted, that is no argument for it being a good ending.
Even if Terry had written it, it remains a terrible ending, in very poor taste and completely out of step with the Good Omens universe that audiences have loved over the years.

If you have a UK address there is a gov.uk petition at the moment for an investigation into the effects of Section 28.
Section 28 banned the mention of or "promotion" of being gay within schools and ushered in decades of silence and violence in this country. Its impact is currently unrecorded, but keenly felt. With the UK currently banning the discussion of being transgender in schools, libraries and other public spaces, along with the bathrooms guidance, we run a risk of repetition. We need statistics on what Section 28 did to two generations of queer people.
