The Problem is Aziraphale and Crowley fought so hard for CENTURIES to have a happy and free life together in the universe they helped create, only to be cheated from that experience and erased from their existence in order to create a new universe that they are unfortunately unable to enjoy themselves together as who they already were. Something that God made very clear to make a point of before she granted their wish. A wish, by the way, wasn't of their free will... because she created the situation that forced them into making it.

God forced that outcome. She created the events that resulted in them making their being cornered and limited. She allowed for all the pieces that created that situation to fall into place. She watched it all happen, watched them fight even though she knew they were fighting a losing battle, and then in the end she berated them, made them feel defeated and helpless with no hope of trying to fight anymore.

She got what she wanted. She got to get rid of the universe with all the humans that displeased her so much and got the excuse to get rid of all her disobedient children in heaven & hell by turning them into humans that were much more to her liking, so she didn't have to deal with their rebellious behavior anymore.

It doesn't matter that these new humans are living happy lives together. It doesn't matter that there are two Aziraphale and Crowley looking humans that found each other and are happy in love. Good for them....but the ending for Aziraphale and Crowley and the universe they created with all the humans they loved, that WE loved and grew connected to.....their ending was cruel and unfair

THATS why we are angry and heartbroken with such deep grief that we are struggling to move on from it and will never be able to accept any positive views on the finale.

If people can't understand that then I don't know what to say anymore.

The Good Omens universe, the humans, all the characters we loved in the book, s1, s2, and Aziraphale and Crowley most of all deserved better. They deserved more than what they got in the end.

I don’t think what I’m feeling is anger anymore.

I think it’s grief.

Not because a TV show ended. TV shows end all the time.

But because Good Omens was never just a TV show to me.

It was a story that found me when I needed it. It reminded me that kindness matters. That questioning authority isn’t a flaw. That becoming who you are is worth everything, even if the systems around you tell you otherwise.

For years, this story felt… safe.

It never felt cynical. It never felt interested in power or status or proving that someone had secretly been the most important person in the room all along.

It was about two people who slowly stopped being what they were told to be.

That was the miracle.

Not that Crowley had once been extraordinary.

Not that Aziraphale was secretly Heaven’s favourite.

The miracle was that they chose each other over systems that had spent six thousand years trying to define them.

That’s what I thought the story believed in.

So when I watched the finale, I didn’t feel like I was watching the natural conclusion of those themes.

I felt like I was watching a story that suddenly valued different things.

Characters didn’t always sound like themselves anymore.

Conversations that should have lingered were over before they had time to breathe.

Moments that should have hurt felt strangely rushed, while other scenes seemed to exist only because the plot needed them to.

It wasn’t one decision.

It wasn’t one line.

It wasn’t even one character.

It was the feeling that somewhere along the way, the soul of the story became harder for me to recognize.

And that’s such a strange kind of heartbreak, because how do you explain mourning something that technically still exists?

The book still exists.

Season one still exists.

The moments that made me fall in love with these characters still exist.

No finale can take those away.

But it can change the feeling of looking back.

I know there are people who loved the ending.

I’m genuinely happy for them.

I wish I had been one of them.

Instead, I keep finding myself thinking less about what happened, and more about everything I felt was missing.

Maybe that’s why I keep writing.

Maybe that’s why fanfiction has become such an important place for me.

Not because I think I can write a “better” ending.

But because writing is the only way I know how to spend a little more time with the version of these characters that taught me so much about love, forgiveness, kindness, and choosing each other.

Maybe that’s the version I’ll always carry with me.

And maybe that’s okay.

And I agree! Sort of. Meaning, I agree with the idea that people aren't entitled to a story working out the way they personally want.

BUT.

In my admittedly limited time hanging out in this fandom, I don't think that's what I've seen. It's certainly not what I personally experienced in my own viewing of the finale.

While it's perfectly reasonable to say that people aren't entitled to stories working out the way they want, I think it's just as reasonable to say that they are allowed to expect a story to function and resolve following its own internal rules. They are allowed to assume a story will maintain its genre, follow through with its message, address loose threads in a way that makes sense within its established logic.

It's not "entitled" to be weirded out and disappointed when your whimsical, fun, satirical comedy-with-a-dash-of-romance suddenly veers wildly off-course and ends up awkwardly metamorphosing into a nihilistic tragedy. It's not petty or whiny to be sad about characters you've known and loved for years being destroyed so suddenly and unexpectedly. Falling in love with a story that - for decades - has had a specific, uplifting, accepted thematic message, only to be upset when that message is abruptly tossed out and replaced with something wildly different isn't the same as demanding writers bend to your will.

Isn't that the point of choosing a genre, or an established fiction? If I want to watch something scary, I'll seek out horror. If I want something heartwarming, I'll go for... I dunno... a Pixar movie or whatever. That's not me demanding things or being entitled; it's me making a choice about what I want to see based upon the established characteristics of specific bits of media.

People aren't upset just because they didn't get the kiss they wanted; they're upset because they decided to watch GO3 with the understanding that this piece of fiction was built around a specific sort of theme and vibe and wholesome message - based upon an established canon - and then they were smacked upside the head with something entirely different.

Fanfiction Club: The Rules

In the book and Season 1, the plot is important. Good Omens is a satire. Among other things, it explores humanity. People's ability to do both the best and the worst things imaginable, the ways in which religion, the promise of Heaven, and the threat of Hell affect them, and so on. Aziraphale and Crowley becoming more human, acting as spies who slowly grow closer, is not the only (nor necessarily the most important) part of the story.

This clearly changes in Season 2. The season has very little plot and is primarily focused on the development of Aziraphale and Crowley's relationship. The other characters introduced are mostly there to reveal something about Aziraphale and Crowley and their dynamic.

That was a huge shift, but I was not upset by it. To me, the change of focus made sense. It was simply a different story. Zooming in on our ineffable boys. It worked for me because it never contradicted what came before, either in terms of the plot or the general message. (Well, I would probably remove the opening scene with Aziraphale being fascinated by angel Crowley, but even that was something I could forgive.)

Therefore, I would never be angry just because Season 3 was very different from the previous seasons. A story is allowed to change its focus. However, my problem is that Season 3 contradicts what was established in Seasons 1 and 2. And it does so both in terms of the plot (humanity using free will to avert Armageddon; Gabriel and Beelzebub using theirs to try to prevent the Second Coming) and in terms of the general message (that messy and imperfect humans can still be incredibly potent when they put their minds to something; even when it feels like extremely powerful forces are against us, hope is not lost).
