Nathaniel Wesninski has been hiding almost as long as he can remember, hiding with his mother from his murderous father, and hiding his magic from anyone who might notice. When Mary dies, Nathaniel has one option left: to call on his power.

He calls, but there’s no answer. The only way Nathaniel can get his magic back is to open himself completely to another. But with his father still hunting for him, that doesn’t seem likely to happen any time soon.

Then again, Nathaniel’s used to being the underdog.

The guy who the bag belongs to looks to be around Neil’s age, maybe a little older. But now that Neil’s close enough to get a better look, he’s clearly exhausted; there’s dark shadows under his eyes that imply a few nights of poor sleep. His blond hair is mussed on one side like he’s been running a hand through it, and he’s dressed all in black; long-sleeved black t-shirt, black torn jeans, black combat boots. He also has a black hoodie which he’s balled up and is using as a pillow against the back of his chair. His arms are crossed, and he looks…not quite pissed off, but there’s certainly something unapproachable about him.

And yet he’s watching Neil, unblinking, unsmiling, almost like he’s silently daring him to speak.

“Can I sit there?” Neil points at the chair.

The guy looks from Neil to the chair and back again, then he shrugs. “I dunno. Can you?”

Neil rolls his eyes mightily, picks up the bag and deposits it on the floor before taking a seat. “I guess I can.”

“Marriage is a human concept,” Andrew adds.

“You love humans, though,” Matt reminds them. “And you already act like an old married couple.”

Neil rolls his eyes. “What’s the point? It’s not like we have commitment issues. It’s hard to form any other long-term relationships when you’re all so temporary.”

Andrew elbows Neil. Right, it’s rude to remind them of their own mortality. Well, too late now.

“He hates you,” Dan says suspiciously. “Neil. You must realize how that sounds.”

“Does he expect you to fix his coffee machine? Is that why he called you?” Matt asks.

Neil scoffs. “You can stop mother henning, assholes. I don’t know if he expects me to fix the coffee machine,” he spits sarcastically. “I might end up doing it because it’s our coffee machine because we have lived together for nearly a year. What the hell are you trying to get at here?”

This is set in a high school au that I occasionally write. In this au Neil is a senior at Andrew’s old high school in Columbia. Andrew and Neil meet at a car wash fundraiser so I’ve dubbed this au the Car Wash AU aka It’s Always You. At the time that this story takes place Andrew and Neil have been dating for about six months.

“You don’t age, right?” Andrew nods. Neil affects an innocent voice and asks, “How long have you been thirteen?”

“I’ll drain you fucking dry, Josten,” Andrew growls, flicking his cigarette butt off the roof.

Andrew is a creature of the night. Neil is too nosy for his own good and nowhere near as bothered as he should be about the whole ‘vampire’ thing. Yes, it’s a Twilight AU.

Neil’s head fell back as he laughed, bright and carefree. He felt as light and dreamy as the sunlight that fell onto their messy, rumpled bedsheets. Grinning stupidly, he met Andrew’s amused gaze and said, “Try me, asshole.”

Andrew was a man of little words, preferring action over pretty lies. But Neil was never like Andrew, he reveled in the way words could be weaponized or anchor him to a life he never thought was possible. Words held a certain power for Neil which is why when he whispers the words in Andrew’s ear, he shuts down. Because Andrew doesn’t think he could ever say them back. And if he can’t, how long will it be before Neil leaves him for someone who can?
